"How old do I feel?"

I was sent this a few years ago now, but it was so evocative, when I stumbled across it again the other day, I thought I'd share with all the children of the late 1960's/70's...:D

"How old do I feel?

Close your eyes & go back in time...
Before the Internet or the Apple Mac....
Before SEGA or Super Nintentdo...
Way back..............

I'm talking about Hide & Seek in the Park.
The corner shop.
Hopscotch.
Butterscotch.
Skipping.
Handstands.
Football with an old can.
Fingerbobs.
Beano, Twinkle.
Roly Poly.
Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.
The smell of the sun, and fresh cut grass.
Bazooko Joe Bubble Gum.
An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune -
Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neopolitan.
Wait..........
watching Saturday morning cartoons...short commercials, The Double Deckers, Road
Runner, He-Man, Tiswas or Swapshop? and Why Don't You - or staying up for Star
Trek.
When around the corner seemed far away and going into town
Seemed like
going
somewhere.
Earwigs, wasps & bee stings.
Cops & Robbers, Cowboys & Indians, and Zorro.
Climbing trees.
Building igloos out of snow drifts.
Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running til you were out of breath, laughing so hard that#
your stomach
hurt.
Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
Spinning around, getting dizzy & falling down was cause for giggles.
Being tired from playing... remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapons.
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a
motorcycle.
I'm not finished just yet...
Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops.
Remember when...
There were two types of trainer, girls & boys, and Dunlop Green Flash -
and the only time you wore them at school was for "gym".
You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasnt odd to have two or three "best" friends.
You didnt sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.
When nobody owned a pure bred dog.
When 25p was a decent allowance.
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got
there.
It was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb.
When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to
dinner at a
real
restaurant with your parents.
When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him, or use
him to carry
groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
when being sent to the Headmaster's office was nothing compared
to the fate that
awaited a misbehaving student at home. We were in
fear for our
lives but it wasn't because of drugs, muggings, abduction
etc.
our parents & grandparents were a much bigger threat! - And
some of us are still afraid of them...!
-
Didn't that feel good?
Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!
Remember when...
Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo".
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in
"Monopoly".
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was
germs
and the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
It was unbelieveable that British Bulldog wasn't an Olympic
event.
Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult.
Nobody was prettier than Mum.
Scrapes & bruises were kissed and made better.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a good fall of snow was a dream come true.
Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the
fiercest protectors.
If you can remember most of these, then you have LIVED. "

Thanks for that! I now feel as though I should have my zimmer to hand in case I fall on my geriatric backside. And I am only 38!

and I am 30 years older than you Gill but empathise 100%.

I remember every single thing mentioned there and for me life was so uncomplicated and so easy.

No paying money into the bank via a machine I do not understand.

No trying to work out probs on my computer that I can not work out even though I could not live without it.

Getting machines speaking to me instead of people..........real people, My god imagine that.

People living on credit.....oh no way, recipe to disaster, credit was not widely available or wanted.

So many things, but you know today does have some good things going for it......now let me think what are they lol !!!!:33::26::23:

I remember only ever eating lunch at school cos you didn't want to go in and stop playing!
If you were thirsty when out playing you could ask anyone for a cup of water and got it! Nobody carried bottles of water!
Also scrumping, blackberry picking, gathering beech nuts. NHS glasses that came in pink or blue!

Oh lordy yes, Shirleen, NHS pink & blue glasses, they were the bane of my life. Congenitally short sighted, I LOATHED those horrible blue specs, which of course gave rise to all the usual taunts of "4 eyes", "speccy" etc etc. Arent kids original???? (& sometimes horrible!)

you can still get that bubble gum :)!

my mum was talking about this the other day how things are different now and kids dont play out....im 23 and ive noticed that myself used to always be out when i was kid with neighbours and friends from school i really dont get the whole hanging on street corners! x

Haha! I am only 25, yet I remember most of these things! Playing on my bike all day etc. Shame this country turned in money grabbing no gooders :0( now i have my own 4 kiddies and i realised how times had changed when their school friends walk home with a nintendo ds!! I had my scooter! Ahhh to be that age again :0)

I love these kind of threads for reminding me how it used to be in the good old days.

We were talking at work the other day about how things have changed in the work environment. When I first worked at BT the stats department used to collate their data by punching the edges of holes out of the order card next to the item ordered, stacking the cards up and pushing a long spike through the holes in the edges of the stack. They would then shake it like h£ll until the punched cards fell out. They counted them up, and that told them how many of that item had been ordered. Then they started again with the next item! I am talking about 33 years ago. It sounds so antiquated now when you just press a few buttons and get everything presented to you on the 'puter screen!

Oh those were the days....:sigh2:

most of that lot went way over my head. Am I too young of sumfink?;)

You wish.........don't forget I am your mumsie and I know !!!

Pear drops covered in crunchy sugar, sugar mice.

Going out for bike rides as a whole family with me on a little seat behind dads saddle and no fear of being wiped out by a juggernaut.

A ten hour journey on the A 38 from Cheshire to Cornwall and breaking the journey by staying overnight in Gloucester at the New Inn and eating prawn cocktail, roast duck with orange sauce and black forest gateau and it being a real treat.

Buying butter loose from a slab, biscuits from glass fronted tins and bacon from a huge piece of smoked pork.

So many things to many to include here.........ahhhhhh yes, those were the days.....not a frozen roast potato in sight !!!

I'm only 20 and I remember almost all of these!! Happy memories :)

I'm 25 and remember all of these ! :D

Anyone else remember cartoons being put on upside down on April fools day morning so you had to sit with your head hanging off the sofa and your feet up the back!
