the role of ketosis in this diet? is it to reduce hunger and the low calories are the actual reason we are losing weight?

i wonder if we werent in ketosis but following the diet we would still lose weight but feel very hungry all of the time? because if ketosis is the reason we are losing weight why is the diet low calorie?!! confused!

you would still lose weight eating 600kcals of anything per days (all chocolate) but i imagine you'd be starving and it wouldn't be sustainable... I think the ketosis makes it manageable and the VLCD makes it rapid. Not sure how exante losses compare to atkins though - i.e. is it just the ketosis = weight loss, or its the ketosis + VLCD that makes exante faster??

p.s. my apologies if i've just added to the confusion... :)

Ketones or being in ketosis is a byproduct of fat metabolism.

You produce some ketones when eating a normal diet but just never in enough quantities to see on test stick.

It is an added benefit that ketones reduce hunger

by sticking to low carb diet it allows your body to use us it's glycogen stores and begin using mostly fat for energy. If on a VLCD this fat will come from excess fat around your body.

Thanks Tiana - that makes more sense now. :D
