Lynne: Low Carb Fan

Glad to hear your eyes are better Lynne. Maybe was the splenda or linseed? Good idea to try the mim without splenda to see if that is the culprit and maybe leave out the almond and hazelnut flour to eliminate them too. Would be nice to know what caused it.

Reading the words sunbed, terrace and pool makes me so jealous.

Enjoy your peaceful house after the weekend. x

Thank Coffeelover. Normally my MIM's are made with either almond or hazelnut flour, linseed, cocoa, splenda, butter, or coconut oil and egg. BUT I was eating a lot of nuts anyway. So maybe it was the nuts, though they didnt give me the classic oral swelling of allergy. I hope I work out what it was and I never experience it again. Though I have had the symptoms on and off for two years, the time from Christmas was extreme and a misery. Yes, the honey will be a good way of seeing if it was the splenda, though it will dent the diet a little. I can get stevia here and maybe i will try it but |I have read it too can be an allergy problem.

We are just off out to meet our friends and bid them a sad farewell. If its any consolation the weather is very grey and wet and we have had extreme hailstones and thunder :)

Hmm, its weeks since I have had a MIM (which I usually make with a base of either Hazelnut flour or almond flour + ground flax). Eyes have been getting better gradually. Over the weekend I had a couple of handfuls of hazelnuts and the next day my eyes very bloodshot and now the swelling is back. I also have had terrible stomach pains and headache, though not sure if that is connected. So, maybe its the hazelnuts.

Susie, I am so glad you had a great time in Italy, the Wisteria is stunning and smells so good. Isn't this a lovely time of the year, especially in this part of the world. We have a lemon tree an orange tree and several other trees and plants in bloom that all smell absolutely amazing, and any day now, the honesuckle will begin to pour its beautiful scent into the mix that is wafting about.

Yes I love spring when it's really springing :D And honeysuckle has got to be one of my favourite scents, along with jasmine and myrtle, ahhhhh

I am so glad to hear your eyes are feeling better, what an awful time you've had with them! I wonder if it's the flax seed you have a problem with? Maybe cut needs and the flax out and see how you get on?

Well done on all the garden work, it sounds like it will be much better for you and for the doggies :)

I might get myrtle. I think its so pretty. Hmm, where to put it..... :)

I haven't had flax in weeks, so, at the moment Hazelnuts are number on suspect with my eyes. I hope it doesn't turn out to be nuts in general. That would be SO bad!

Could be the hazelnuts Lynne. I do my mims with just 1/4 cup of flax since the hazelnuts could be a problem you could try that. x

Yes, I know the original recipe is for 100% flax, but flax is dearer than the nuts, so I thought I would do a flax/ and hazelnut or almond mix. I hope I have now found out its the hazelnuts for sure. But then I will have to find out if I seem sensitive to all nuts. What a pain THAT will be.

Well let's hope not but i guess you're just going to have to experiment with different nuts or cut them out altogether :(

How's the weather today? it started off lovely here but clouds are now hanging overhead boo.

We have had some very unsettled weather with heavy rainfall and moody skies. Saturday we had such a deluge, I heard two JCB's working for a couple of hours because rocks were washed down the lane from the mountain and caused a flood on the main road. Since then the weather has been improving and it might now be settled and today has been lovely. We have almost finished the garden and the new plants are 'finding their feet'. Theres a few more plants to buy, but on an as-and-when basis.

I really hope I dont have to cut nuts altogether. Fingers crossed for that. :)

Hi Lynne, good to see you:). Sorry to hear a new flare up but useful if you think you might know what it is! Well worth tracking the specifics down as may be certain types rather than all nuts

Good luck xxxx

Thanks Kat1e, Yes, I hope I have found the culprit. It will be a disaster if it is more than just hazelnuts. My digestion often gets inflamed. And it certainly was last weekend when I had the nuts and then my eyes, migraine, and stomach pain happened. My husband was diagnosed with irritable bowel and he snacks on a lot of nuts. I have suggested to him that he eats dried fruit instead and see if his stomach goes from constipated and painful to painless and working like a well greased Rolls Royce, LOL!!!

Of course, what I suggest, and what he actually does, are two different things.......

Men!!!!!! I could happily munch on dried dates :) works wonders for the digestive system too!
Fingers crossed for you that it's not the hazelnuts, love them!

Lol at the husband not taking up suggestions, I think they are all the same, I hope your eyes continue to improve.

Well I am wavering now because I also suspect cornflakes. I KNOW I shouldn't be eating them when (supposedly) Low Carbing, -my bad. So now I am not having Splenda, hazelnuts and cornflakes. I would like to say my eyes are much improved, but maybe the skin has been swollen for so long its stretched like an old balloon :(

I continue to be BAD. I have days where I can feel myself winding up to look at inspiring reading and hope it carries me off on being good and organised again. But that mood, sadly, doesn't last.

An update: Not sure I mentioned it but we have had the garden remodelled with crazy paving in place of the grass because the dogs were churning it up and running mud and dust everywhere. It looks fab but after it was finished, a week ago my husband found they had punctured a high power water pipe (when our neighbours turned on their well water pump, which we share), and some of the paving had to come up. Its all been mended and looks good again. Also we have a swimming pool and it needs re-grouting. So my husband drained it and has re-grouted the sides and part of the bottom but, as usual each time we drain it, there is water seeping in to it and so some is perpetually damp and we have had it empty for over 7 weeks now hoping it will dry out. This has entailed all his equipment being plonked on the veranda in a messy pile which has to be stepped over every time I go out there. It was suggested we used a coating on the grout to seal it. All this did was stick like cr*p to the tile surface and took DAYS using stripper, to remove. Despite us being told it wouldn't be a problem. IF the pool is cracked somewhere, we dont understand why it doesn't lose water when it's full :lost: -A puzzle.

Just to add to my teeth clenching, I decided I would change all my passwords due to the Heartbleed issue. I thought it would be better to use a password generator because there was glaring holes in my password system  So I downloaded LastPass. Had I have known it wasn't going to be the breeze they suggested it would be, I would have booked into a sanitorium. Instead, I believed the blurb and dived in. I would hate to admit how many hours I have been working on this project. It is trying my patience beyond belief. The idea is simple. The issue, though, seems to be that each website behaves differently. So, each time I generate a new password on each site, I have varying degrees of success. Some take 4 minutes, some fight me tooth and nail. I realise that I get so involved in the process, reacting to prompts as they appear, that I lose track of what exactly I did and wish my son was here to watch this struggle so he can tell me I am being an idiot, or that I am right, it is the vagaries of each site, messing me about. Please don't suggest another system, I am too far down the line to change now. I really could not face it. Anyway, nearly finished.

Today we will be going to a birthday party BBQ. The sun is out and its warm. I plan to take my Kindle and continue reading "Turkey With Stuff In", which is a book written by a lovely lady who's blog I really enjoy. The book tells how she came to live in Turkey in the first place. I am over half way through it and am enjoying it immensely, which was no surprise because her blog is a treat to read. I have suggested she turns her blog into the follow-up book.

I am sorry I haven't been around much. I am floundering diet-wise and don't want to bore y'all with the stupidity of my day to day dithering. I have NOT given up :D

Hi Lynne, hang in there and more importantly keep coming here - the forum is here for us on dithery days!

I'm actually a last pass fan - perhaps tricky to set up but once done properly it's just fab:) hope you get the benefit too xxx

Oh Kat1e, that has really made me smile, thanks so much! I am sorry I haven't been about much. People here in Turkey are commenting too. I seem to have been limiting my socialising, to an extent. I just don't want the hassle. That must sound terrible. But I am limiting myself to just seeing people I enjoy and feel easy with because theres a thread of feeling edgy and over sensitive and I am trying to steer my way through it. I joined a fortnightly knitting club and it is SO good. We all sit in the sun, knitting away and chatting at an easy pace. But even there, last time, I sort of lost it and talked too much and felt so bad afterwards. I wrote to apologise to the lady I was chatting with and she was very understanding. I think I bottle things up then sort of explode. Its not good and I am trying to be more aware, -for instance, socially, coffee or coke can make me more likely to talk too much, so I am avoiding it.

LastPass has been great. I still have a few more to set up though and I hope they go smoothly. It's good to have the peace of mind from using it. I have it set up on my tab also. Later my GH is going to join too as I have a Premium account. I am considering flying to UK when he is setting it up because the difference between me doing it and him is that while I will suffer in teeth clenched silence and keep struggling to sort out the problem ones, my DH cusses, tuts and swears.and it puts me on edge (understatement).

Anyway, I do pop in to see how everyone is doing. I love this site and enjoy the friends I have made here and seeing how they are getting on. I do feel embarrassed that I am not doing so well but its good to see that other people are changing diets, so its not just me :D I am coaching a friend who is on Atkins and I am proud to say he has lost 4 stones and is loving it. I am so pleased for him because I know the weight was getting him down a lot and I suggest recipes for him to try and he often comes back to me to say "It was bloody lovely" :) LOL!!!!!

I sent another friend a PDF copy of DANDR because she is thinking of following Atkins. I dont often talk about Atkins to anyone, but I was supposed to be house sitting for her while she went to the UK and I had asked her not to get any food in for me (because I thought I would use it to concentrate on low carbing) she asked why and I told her I would diet. So she asked which diet and I told her..... Later she contacted me and said I was so enthusiastic, it had made her curious. So, she now has the book on her Kindle and I am oping she finds it works for her. But she, like me will have a husband who will sabotage her. Actually it will be worse for her because he was a chef and tends to do all their cooking. So if he isnt 100% behind her, she will struggle.

As I say, I will have to study the books and see which one sits best with me. Though I don't post often, I still pop in a couple of times a week. I really enjoy reading everyone's posts :) Take care Kat1e :p

Still haven't decided on the best plan for me. Though it will definitely be Low Carb High Fat. I still want to be able to have dairy. I love cheese butter yoghurt and cream. And I will soon be making milk Kefir, because I am trying to get as much probiotics into me as I can. In a way I am already back to dieting, because I am eating LCHF. I was sort of hoping I would find a plan that suited me to a tee and inspired me. But when I read the thinking behind each of them, I either find something that's a problem or I dont understand it 100% (or both). Maybe I should just carry on with LCHF and muddle along. I have a Kindle jammed with Low Carb, Diabetic, gluten free, Paleo, Keto, Atkins, Primal (mostly free downloads), so no shortage of recipes. Very frustrating that I cant get sweet potato, butternut squash, macadamias or brazil nuts here. Plus, I have yet to establish if coconut flour is available. So, I doubt whether any WoE I choose will be 100% what the diet advises.

'Tis a sunny day today and I hope it stays that way, seeing as we have had days and days of rain. Poor people on holiday, they have had sun sandwiches. They will go home with a mix of tan and rust.

Tomorrow I am going to see the ENT chap at the hospital because I think I have a nasal polyp. The symptoms vary from not being aware of it to feeling it almost moving, making my eye water my nose run, and my sinuses ache. From reading about it, it is caused by allergy and is either treated topically, or pills or removal, BUT they tend to return. Oh bliss :(

With so many weird things happening, I am considering writing all my symptoms down so I can see a doctor and hit him with the lot. Years ago I used to watch Marcus Welby MD. What a program, it was the dream scenario. -Patient sees him and describes their problem. Marcus then spends an age chatting with them, doing tests and researching, then makes a brilliant and well considered diagnosis. Well this is the real world. You queue, you get your allotted 10 mins, which is swiftly used up with the translator acting as intermediary. The doc efficiently makes his decision and you are spat out into the sunlight blinking and wondering if he understood exactly what you meant. If I go with a long list of concerns, then I doubt they will get properly considered (and they might well add up to under active thyroid), but I think I have to give it a try. But, one thing at a time, lets get this pesky polyp seen first. At least that is a simple one.

Knitting club this afternoon. Just the thought of it makes me smile. Good times.

Hope your doctor appt goes well Lynne. Totally forgot about Marcus Welby that gave me a chuckle.

Low carb seems to suit you and your doing well with it.

Do they maybe call sweet potatoes something different? What about pumpkin? x

I said butternut but that MAY be available here, I have seen squashes made in to lights ;) I was actually thinking of spaghetti squash. A veggie friend maintains you cant get sweet potato here. I certainly don't remember seeing them. Pumpkin, yes, why do you ask? Are you thinking substitution?

Yes pumpkin can be used in most recipes that call for sweet potato or butternut and is lower in carbs too! I'm very jealous if you have spaghetti squash I love it. Just bake it and cut open and use the strands as you would spaghetti. I have to order it online although wholefoods over here carry it certain times of the year. crazy! :)
