If you put powder in first with a little cold water and mix to a paste then add water and shake its much better.

Thanks for that tip Linda, I imagine that the paste dissolves more easily than the powder, but doesn't it try to cling into the 'corners' at the bottom?

Perhaps it's time I bought one of my own shakers & ran a series of tests.
At the moment I'm advising others from hearsay..which is NOT the cambridge way.

Will report back when I've compared the different techniques ......

I took one of these out with me on Saturday and with lots of vigorous shaking (by dh, not me!) I had a lumpless shake - not quite the same as with the blender at home but acceptable enough to drink (I would gag on lumps and don't like tetras so this is a fine alternative for me when there's not electricity.)
