Have finally decided, after 32 years of my life not knowing what I wanted to do, that I want to go to uni to study nursing!
I have got a 5 year plan now and am really excited.
I've got a place in college to do a part time cours this year to get my brain working again, then next September will be doing an access to HE course(as I never did a-levels and it's been 16 years since I did any proper study), then all being well, off to uni in September 2013 to do a nursing degree!
Has anyone done the nursing access course? Or anyone on here a nurse? Or maybe even doing the course, as any advice and guidance would be gratefully received!
It also gives me more incentive to lose weight as I obviously have to have a uniform for uni!!

Congratulations on your decision. It must be a great feeling to know what youy want to do and are going for it.

I know there are several nurses on here but at the weekend it is always quieter,

I will try and bump up your thread from time to time if no one sees it because I am certain there are folks here who can help.

I'm a nurse. I'm in mental health, and work in a community mental health team. I qualified almost 20 years ago and did the traditional training. 6 weeks in the school of nursing, and you were turfed out onto the wards and counted amongst the numbers!:eek:Sounds unbelievable now, but I loved my training and don't know if I could do it now as it's much more academic....back then it was very practical. So I can't really tell you much about how your training will be because mine was totally different.

I went into mental health rather than general because basically I'm nosy;)I love to hear people's stories, it's one of the few times I can ask people personal questions yet still be working.

It can be very hard work, but at the same time very rewarding. Enjoy it!

Hi Welshtigger, I am a nurse and absolutely love my job and enjoyed the training even though it was hard work. More interesting to you though is that my mum qualified at the same time as me, she started her training at 38, after all of us were at school (I am the eldest of 6) Before starting the course she did an open university course as although she had alevels she had done any formal education for a long time and wanted to get her head around essay writing! I am very proud to say she got a first class honors degree in mental health nursing and is now about to get her second degree to specialise further (she is still only 44). She says it was the best thing she has ever done and adores her work. There were some people on my course in their fifties, so you will still be young in comparision to alot of your intake, people do tend to join the career later :) Any questions feel free to mail me :)
    Best of luck xxxxx

Are they modules of the degree? Or part of the diploma? Are you going to pick it up again?

Hi there, I'm about to start a nursing degree in September and just can't wait!

The one thing I would say is that experience is very important, it came up at all my interviews and a many uni's will not accept students who have no relevant experience.
It could be anything from working in healthcare to having care for a relative. Volunteer work (e.g. in a hospital) is also fantastic.

Best of luck with everything! Don't worry about being a little older, many of the nurses I work with qualified at 40+ and if anything you are at an advantage cause you're not an immature kid just out of school!

I can't give you much info about the course as I've not started yet but I know most are roughly 50% theory and 50% practice, 3 years is the usual length and the course runs on a pretty much full time basis for 42 weeks of the year.

If there's anything else I might be able to help you with please ask!

Brill, thanks. I have to do my access course first, so would be good to keep updated with how your course is going. Where will you be doing your degree? x

    Hi
I've been a nurse since 1980 !! I specialised in plastic surgery first then moved on to occupational health

For 23 years I looked after the student nurses and trained nurses and all other hospital staff in the NHS then I moved out the NHS into the big bad business world.
I've been Occ health nurse for prison staff, postmen, mobile phone companies, power companies, industrial services, whisky distillers, ambulance services, department of work and pensions and many more
I love my job ,and the variety of people I talk to and support on a daily basis.
I wish you all the best in your new venture.
One piece of advice .... Be true to yourself, be true to your patients , always treat someone as you would like your own family to be treated and NEVER forget your sense of humour x

Will keep my diary updated with the goings on lol. Feel free to pop by :) I'm doing it at the uni of Liverpool, do you have any idea where you would like to go?

Also check out this website; Student Nurse - it's a really useful resource for wannabe student nurses to qualified nurses and everyone inbetween. The forum was invaluable when I was writing my personal statement etc.

hello tigger, althougth you may not believe this if you read any of my other posts but i to am a nurse :)
Have been qualified since the late 1980's so also did the old training. I work on an acute admissions unit so life is never dull. I also work with students a lot as a mentor and think a little bit of life experience goes a long way and one of the best students i have ever had turned 50 while working with me :)
It is usually the one area in my life i am in control. I have never regretted becoming a nurse even on the really bad days and i am sure you won't either. Neither the training or the job are easy, but it is really worth doing.

    Good Luck xx

Did you do the access course aswell? Or a-levels x

Bangor is supposed to be fantastic! I'm sure you will have a ball :) The student room is another good site, I haven't been on there in a good while but lots of helpful things there if I remember rightly.

I didn't do the access course no, I did A-Levels but not nursing or biology related ones, I've just finished a psychology degree - realised about 6 months in that I should have done nursing instead but never mind - got there eventually!

Ah right! So you're used to studying then! I left school in 1995 with 9 GCSE's, went to college for 12 months to do horse studies and then, with the exception of training courses with work, my brain has been resting since!
I'm doing a book keeping and computerised accounts course one night a week this year, as its something I enjoy, and could potentially use it to make a bit of money while I'm in uni :) and also I couldn't afford to go back to college full time just yet-need 12 months or so to save up for it x
