Part of the blame....

Well... This may be quite a controversial post but I have to put it out there! Since doing a total food replacement diet I have noticed how, as a Nation, we are bombarded with food. And not just any food, the wrong foods. It has got on my wick over the last few days and I wanted to see what others thought.

Here is what I mean... Every other TV advert is of food. Whether this be take aways such as McDonalds/Dominos or new products like a brand of oven chips, or even offers of JUNK food in supermarkets, they are constant! Even when food is not on the brain it gets put there! I was happily drinking my black coffee with no thoughts of food what so ever. Watching TV and the millions of food ad's I started feeling hungry! Or thinking I was hungry. Either way it would usually lead to walking to the fridge and having something to eat. I cannot quite beleive how many of these are on TV. Now, why aren't those adverts put to good use to promote healthy choices? Why can't the offers be on meats, fruit and veg? Do we really need 3 for 2 on pringles and 2 massive chocolate bars for £2? No we don't. But the offers out there are contributing to us making the wrong choices. No wonder the rates of obesity are so bloody high!

Me and the boyfriend went to Dagenham market and Southend over the weekend. Again, totally bombarded with food. Every other stall was a burger van, ice cream van, cake stall, donut place... I could go on! It was utterly ridiculous. Before starting this diet I would have ended up thinking, burger van + lunch time = unhealthy snack!! Just because it is there it gets used! Could this not perhaps be transformed into 'sandwich vans', fruit/smoothie stalls, hot food vans selling jacket potatoes? Obviously I am not saying that the occasional treat isn't allowed but blimey do we have to be surrounded by such ridiculously unhealthy choices? I think not.

So my point is... Part of the blame for the levels of overweight and obese people living in the UK is daily life! We need to have our guards up and constantly make the right choices if we want to succeed in maintaining weight loss. Sadly, those companies are still in business because they make so much profit pulling people in. Everyone knows McDonalds, if I wanted it I would have it - I don't need to see it on my TV everyday.

Anyway my rant is over, I look forward to seeing what other people think.

I agree... it is literally rammed down your throat... Don't get me wrong.... I am fat due to my own bad choices....

If i could change anything i would change what we are taught in school....

I think my 'home economics' class would have been better as a diet/nutrition lesson... We made pizza/flapjacks etc... the usual stuff!!! I think that kids should be taught what they should be eating... and the consequences of eating the not so good things...

Like you say there will always be a place for treats but that should be what they are! Not part of your everyday diet!!!

These kids need educating!! As you say the unhealthy stuff is the stuff thats too readily available/on offer/easy!!!

Deezer I am training to be a primary school teacher and exactly what you have said is what I want to take into the classroom. Children DO need educating! I am taking a specialism in physical education and also managing childhood obesity with diet and nutrition. I am hoping to set up after school activities on making the right choices and spending more time in lessons looking at what a healthy diet is. I am so glad others share that view.

Of course it is us who decide what to put in our mouths but it is more expensive and more difficult to maintain a healthy diet these days! Xx

I just think if kids were aware of portion size more than anything else!!! I was never told any of this!!! The blame lies at my feet but something needs to be done to help these kids!! x

Oh sorry! I'm new! :-( Xx

I so agree with you both on this... we should have some kind of National Campaign to restrict advertising, teach the children at home and at school and get the government to give free sporting activities, especially swimming, where they can get moving again!! Whilst the idea of reaching the children is where I'd love to see it happen, I appreciate that it's the Mum's who usually do the shopping. They need to be targeted too, with incentives to buy the healthier options.

Totally agree!! It is a subject I feel so strongly and passionate about. Even chef's on programmes like 'This Morning' aren't exactly cooking healthy meals. I just don't know what they want people to do when such foods are shoved in your face the whole time! A National advertising restriction would be brilliant!!!!!!!! Xx
