Pregnancy and Baby Advice Thread: From Conception to Birth, and Beyond!

Yep, me. Seth does not do napping! The only time he will nap is in his pram. Even white noise etc will not send him to sleep in the day... He's been better the last few days though as he's been sleeping well at night, otherwise we get the evening meltdown too with overtiredness! I know that's no help really but just so you know it's not just Oliver ;) xxx

Thanks hun. It's so frustrating when you can tell they are tired but they just won't give in x

Hi penny we started hungry baby formula (2 feeds per day) and colief last week and since then Bella been alot more settled and now goes 4 hours between feeds. In the 4 hours I force her to have a nap by any means possible, on me, rocked to sleep, pushchair, in the car etc although sometimes she will now fall asleep herself either on me straight after feeding or on her play mat. Will Oliver sleep in his pram or I the car? Just thinking it might be a good place to start x[

Oh that's really good. Pleased to hear Bella is more settled. I'm hoping the same happens to Oliver.

Yes he is fairly good at sleeping in the pram or at seat so think I will go for a walk or drive in the afternoon to get him to sleep if I can't another way. X
I just put Thomas down after one of his meltdowns, only thing working for me just now is to swaddle him, put his dummy in, rock him and say shhh repeatedly, he's gone after 5 mins and I can then put him down. Sometimes though he will go down fine by himself!

Oliver wouldn't take a dummy this week but I tried one from my changing bag - avent one as opposed to the mam one and he has taken it today. This seems to calm him a bit more which is good. He still doesn't like swaddling sadly x

Cole used to refuse, point blank. He'd literally be awake from 7am to bedtime, unless we went in the car and even then it had to be more than a 10 minute journey for him to nod off. Since we swapped a few things he naps loads now. In fact, he's currently on his second nap since 6am!! A few things I did are: *HB milk *White noise (as loud as my phone would go then gradually turning it down as he started to nod) *Rocking in his chair but quite fast then gradually slowing down once his eyes start dropping *Playing with him for an hour after his bottle then trying to get him down when he's tired out rather than putting him down straight after a bottle (although he's the other way round in the night) *7pm bedtime so he gets 11-12 hours sleep a night Not sure if they'll work for you but it's a start. I also do what Nelly does and let him fall asleep wherever he needs to. Xx

Thanks Hun, we are trying 1 or 2 hungry baby feeds a day like you did to start with. We use the white noise app which does help at night. Will try earlier bed time and the playing tactic too, thanks x

So I spoke to girls from antenatal group today about this and the tough week we have had, and we agreed that his meltdowns in the evening are likely to be down to him being overtired and that a 7 week baby shouldn't be going from 2pm til 9pm or even later without a dose.

So we are going to try enforce a mini routine between his feeds. At the moment he feeds every 3 hours so we will feed. If he seems sleepy then put his dummy in, rock him, hold him close, maybe skin to skin, put white noise on and put him down- maybe carry cot, travel cot, swing seat or car seat depending on how well the winding went. If he isn't tired then play for an hour max and then try put him down.

Before his 9pm feed (or the one around that time), give him naked time in the bathroom so it doesn't matter if he poos or wees then bath, massage, bottle and bed time story, then put in bed.

Now this is all good in theory, I'm well aware it's not easy but if it means me going out in the pram
Or for a drive to get him to sleep then it's worth a shot.

So far today Oliver slept on our lap from 9.30-10.30am then we went to baby massage. Feed at 12ish and then he fell asleep in the car going to the pub. So slept 12.30-2.30 and then screamed for food. He fell asleep again on way home and stayed sleeping for a while so 3.50-5.50. He had a play, bum change then milk at 6.15. He then went back to sleep with the aid of dummy and rocking and put in his car seat and has been asleep since so 6.50 until 8.50. We are going to wake him now and then bed time routine as above. Will see how it goes.

I think I also need to give him a couple of minutes of crying when he is put in his bed before going and picking him up, it won't be easy but he may settle himself.

Hopefully we will have a happier baby because he isn't so tired and then he may naturally moved to less frequent feeds during the night.

Thanks for all your help girls x

Sounds like you have a plan penny! Fingers crossed it works for you. Don't beat yourself up if it doesn't straight away, can take a few days to adapt, we found that. And it might need a few tweaks to make it work for you. Good luck, hope you have a lovely weekend. Xxxx

No I'm not expecting miracles.

Naked time wasn't great success. Lots of tears.
Bath time and massage were ok.
Milk was almost inhaled.
Story time by daddy was about tractors
Put him down about 15mins ago. Few cries when his dummy has fallen out. I'm in bed near him now. He is still awake but not crying.
White noise app on rather loud.

Hopefully he will get to sleep soon and then that will be first night this week without very tired screaming for hours during the evening.

I hope he settled himself to sleep! Sounds like a good routine you've got planned. I find rebecca is better in the evening if she sleeps well in the day.... she seems to want more sleep the more she has so I think you are on the right path with trying to encourage sleeps between 2 and 9. Good luck in sure he will settle in to the routine soon enough :) xx

Hope it goes well, seems like a good plan x

Hopefully you both get a good sleep! X

Yeah, seems that sleep leads to more sleep with babies! I still can't convince Seth to nap in the day but he's sleeping pretty well at night now so I can't complain.

We've started trying to get Seth asleep for 10 with a loose routine, we didn't get a story in last night but he had a bath instead as he needed one! I'm not keen on enforcing a routine as I'm not convinced it will work so what we're trying to do is follow him in effect - watching what he does, following that and then trying to modify it if needed. So at the mo he's more than ready for sleep by 9/10 so then I just need to move that forward a bit as time goes on. Ideally I'd like him asleep for 9, well ideally I want it earlier (about 7/8) but then he'll get no time with his dad who doesn't get home til 7 after work. Bedtime takes about an hour and we'll put in whatever seems appropriate, if he's not in the mood for a story we'll have relaxing music instead. As long as we're reasonably consistent and he makes good associations with sleep (low lighting, nice calm atmosphere etc) then I'm happy to keep it fairly loose.

What seems to have made the difference for us is the bigger sleeping space and the sleeping bag. He seems much comfier and he's therefore been much happier in the daytime as he's well rested at night!

Hope Oliver's slept well Penny! xxx

Thanks ladies. Well we didn't even any melt downs so I say that's a success. Oliver went to sleep soon after putting down so was in bed from 9.40-1.05 then 1.25-4.45 then 5.10-7.45. Slightly longer than 3 hours on some of those feeds too so success.

Paul is playing with him now and we will try make sure he naps by 9.45 because his 3 hour feed would be at 10.45 but if he doesn't wake up then that's fine. Always happy for milk time to go back to a 4 hour cycle ;)

I think everyone has to do whatever suits them. I don't think our routine will be precise with times but I would like to be consistent with the bed time routine so that he knows what's coming. Before Oliver was born I went to a baby shower and we went to a sleep seminar and they were saying that a baby who sleeps more in the day, wil sleep better at night.... So let's hope that works eventually with Oliver

Still early days but we didn't have a melt down yesterday so that's good. Paul is going to be on his own with Oliver this afternoon so just hope he manages to get him down to snooze too.

Look what has arrived this morning :D

Hi ladies some advice please... I'm out shopping and had a few sharp pains in bump which were like ouch for a second or 2. Don't think anything of it but I went to the toilet and I think I've lost a little bit of my plug. Only slightly, or maybe a clumb of discharge?

Would you just leave it and see how things go? As I've not had any more pains or anything. Just feel drained, and my grandad said I'm really pale. Don't think that's out to do with anything though?? Xx

I would give them a ring and go and be checked. Could be any number of things including it being nothing but as well to be sure. Xx

Couldn't get hold of midwife, think I need emergency number for her.... But called labour ward they've said if I get anymore pains then to go in for a checkup x

Happy Mothers Day to all you Mummies and Mummies to be. Hope you all have a lovely day xxx
