Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of Prozac. Doctor put me on this a few months ago as was suffering from depression and not functioning very well (all down to men!!). However, i managed to put weight on but heart on heart I can't think whether it could have been the Prozac or whether I just ate more. Someone mentioned to me that it was Prozac so stopped taking it, went to WW, lost 1 stone, got bored, joined SW on Monday. However, went to Docs today and she advised me to go back on Prozac but I am terrified it'll hamper weight loss. Would be grateful for anyone's advice as I am so confused as to whether to take the Prozac or not, to be honest I really feel as though it does me good but don't wanna put weight on, anybody else on had experience of this

It works! After about 6 weeks though you need to ask for further thearapy, Preferably Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This medication was made to get u to the point where you could engage in some more interactive stuff.
If u r low u won't be able to stick to a diet anyway so better to get ur head straight imo then get going on the weight loss.

Ive been on prozac for years its not hindered my weight loss at all. In fact a side effect is reduced apetite for a lot of people so doubt its the med. Keep taking it as your mental health is important, when you feel better in yourself you'll find you'll be eating less naturally anyway. I always comfort eat on a downer but when I'm having a good day I don't feel as hungry at all.

thanks for that, think I just got worried when somebody said Prozac put weight on. I also tend to eat when I'm down and healthier when I feel okay. thanks for your advice and I will keep taking it, its what i need at the moment and your right mental health is important, its great that there's people on here that understand. Thankyou both x

    Hi jamhulio :)

It's several years ago now since I was prescribed Prozac for Post Natal Depression. It didn't suit me personally but not because of anything weight related, just made me feel like I was on a ship that was rolling form side to side and awful nausea from that.

Because I knew it was more of a priority to treat the depression than just think sod it I can sort myself out, I went back to my GP and was prescribed Seroxat. That worked very well for me, no increase or decrease in appetite if I remember correctly and I was fully recovered in 6 months.

I notice that you say you do feel better with the Prozac so IMO that is pretty important as it shows that it is doing the job it is meant to with your Serotonin levels. You also say you are terrified on putting on weight and I can totally understand that to :)

There are so many Anti Depressants available nowadays that we don't have to put up with side effects we don't want usually. Many of my clients will go back to their GP's and swop around until they find what's best just for them.(and a lot of it is men related!!)

The way I see this, and it's only my opinion, is that if you don't treat any depression(by any means) first or at least alongside your own weightloss programme, then I believe your mind set may make things tougher for you and your motivation on down days and feed into any negativity.

I hope what I have posted does not sound too direct or lengthy hun. My intention is just to say that I think anything that has an impact on your mood needs to be a priority to treat so that you can enjoy the successes with weightloss and I am speaking to myself here as well as I type!!!

    Best wishes,

    Lacey..xx:D

That is one medication you aren't supposed to take yourself off of either, it should be a gradual process and with your GP's involvement. Not trying to be preachy but just don't want you to suffer any ill side affects!!! xx

Good health is way more important than weight loss, so maybe you should get the health sorted and then worry about the weight honey!!

    Good luck babe!!

i was on seroxat for 5 years - not through choice, but because i was dependent on it due to withdrawl side effects.

it was prescribed for depression, anxiety and panic attacks. i'd been ill for 3 months before i was given them because they couldn't decide what was wrong with me. i hardly ate during that time and lost sooo much weight, but i didn't feel good about it as i was so mentally ill.

when i started the medication my appetetie became insatiable almost overnight! i would eat 3 huge meals a day aswell as 3 or 4 kingsize snickers and an hour after dinner i would eat a large bag of doritos, a tub of cheese dip and a tub of ben and jerrys - and sometimes another tub of ben and jerrys later that night! i could never eat that amount now, so it was 100% the medication. i piled so much weight on, but i didn't care because i was feeling better mentally and placed that as my priority.

my consultant has said that medication won't put weight on you but it can increase your appetite, which in turn will make you eat/want to eat more. if prozac makes your appetite increase you are in the right place to control it as you can fill up on free foods, etc.

look after yourself and i hope you have a speedy recovery - i wouldn't wish what you're going through on anyone. i've been there and it is like being in a black hole with no way out. just make sure you see your GP regularly to discuss your medication, etc and request counselling now as it can take up to a year to get an appointment.

Thanks for that Karen, good to read your story and find that I'm not the only one thats been or going through it. I'm nearly crying reading my messages, in a nice way though. It's nice that people care and give advice on here, to be honest its keeping me going at the minute, its helping with my dieting and helping distract me, I agree with what you say about tablets, my GP said that they may increase appetite but up to me to control it and shouldn't therefore put weight on .

    prozac & weight loss.

I started taking Prozac for bad depression 6 months ago. I read that it could cause weight loss. The Prozac does NOT cause the weight loss. It affects the brain so that will-power is more effective. I am just as hungry but I now feel less depressed and have the will-power to watch my intake. Since starting I have lost 5 stone without any other outside help, just sheer will-power. I have never been able to do that for 30 years.

I have no experience of Prozac. I just wanted to say I wish you lots of luck and the will power to stick with SW and achieve what you want to achieve.

Depression, even at the most minor level is awful. I feel for you.

Losing weight is in itself an anti depressant.

    Good Luck,

    hugs xxxxx
