For me it's all in the head... keeping away from food is easier than having a little... my other half had instructions to bring me a box of fresh cream cakes (well one box each if I'm honest) that we'd freeze to eat next Wed on our day off, but I cancelled the order cos, to be honest, we're LOADS of things "to eat" which are nearing their sellby so don't need more.
Once I start, I can be very silly... I can eat humungous quantities, while with you, and you'll not see or hear a thing...
Once last year, the other half was doing some DIY upstairs so I stuck a treacle pudding in the microwave, carefully stopped it before it PINGED... put custard in, heated it and stopped it by hand... was halfway through a fabulous bowl and heard him coming downstairs. Cheeks abulging, I hid it under my chair... and there the remains sat. Until I could get at them, eat them cold, wash up the bowl, and put it away. The tins were in the bottom of the dustbin, unvisible if bin opened.
And that was on top of whatever other stuff I was eating WITH HIM... just that he'd said how full he was, so I couldn't let him see me continuing!!
