Weight loss or muscle building?

Hi,
Can anyone give me some advise please? As a guy I want to lose my weight ( at least 3st to go) but I also want some muscle definition and tone when I get to goal. Is it better to concentrate on losing the weight first before considering building muscle or should I combine the two by doing some weights and cardio at the gym?

The trainer I saw at the gym explained that as you build muscle you burn more fat, so you should do both at the same time.
