Whats better....Very low carb or Low GI (yes they are different)

Just curious as to find which has worked best for people. I thought that Low GI also meant Low carb, but after seeing my specialist I was corrected on this and she told me to go zero or very low carb. I don't have a high carb diet anyway, and always chose brown/whole grain products over white. I just don't know which is best to follow or if people combine the two.

Thanks in advance :)

For me low GI was a good start on learning what my body needs and dislikes.
Cut out- really sugary stuff, had fruit vs juice etc...but didn't stop me getting hungry and being overweight

Only when i finally went lowcarb (atkins so initially 20g carbs a day), did i discover a whole new way of eating that my body loves:) not only did i lose weight but feel fabulous with tons of energy!

If want to try then recommend you give each thing a go for at least 30days to see what suits you
Good luck

:) thank you

At the moment, I am having a Zero Carb Zero Sugar/Sweetner Protein Shake with half milk half water for breakfast, a 2 slice chicken linseed and soya sandwich and a low fat yogurt for lunch, snacking on low GI fruit if I get hungry, and having chicken salad/omelet/quorn mince and seeded pitta for tea. I sometimes have pasta too but try not to eat carbs after 3pm. Its kinda low carb, low GI, low calorie, I try aim for 1200 a day. I was going to switch to an actual diet plan, like Atkins, but I don't know if it will work and if I will feel ill on it.

Just curious as to how other people find the different diet types, I know everyones different.

Well done on your weight loss by the way!!

I feel great in Atkins - I've honestly never met anyone who felt bad on it when following the diet properly (after the first week when the body is adjusting and many do feel bad), only people who eat too few carbs, too many or too little fat seem to.

Atkins involves eating high fat - so its not low calorie but you lose at a much higher calorie level. I wasn't losing at 1200 calories when calorie counting but lose at 1500 plus on low carb.

It's moderate protein so you can eat just about any meat with a focus on good quality whole foods and preferably avoiding processed things. Fish and dairy are great too.

It's low carb and you have to cut out all wheat - so no bread or pasta at all - and starches - no potato, oats, rice - and sugar - no honey, fruits except low carb ones (rhubarb initially and then certain berries). There are good replacements for most things though, like celeriac as a replacement for chips and cauliflower mash and rice. If you're doing it right you'll eat lots of the allowed veggies - I have whole veggie days sometimes.

Agree with Katie - it's a good idea to try any new thing for30 days to really test if it's right for you. I also followed low GI for a while but figuring it all out (some things are low GI when combined with others but not on their own etc) was overly complicated for me and I didn't lose much weight. I like Atkins for the clear cut rules.
