I know this is a little late but you can steam things without a steamer. I know someone who wraps salmon in foil and puts it in the dishwasher!! Never tried it myself though. She swears its the best way!
You can steam veg in a saucepan. Just sit a sieve above boiling water and cover with a lid or even foil. Did this once when I ran out of tiers on my steamer. Turned out fine.
