You may have seen this developing on other groups today but if not, this is important information.

Weetabix who make Alpen Light cereal bars have changed the recipe and the new formulation is higher in calories and has less than half the amount of fibre. From the nutritional info available the new bars will be 4.5 syns and not have enough fibre in them to count as a healthy extra anymore.

As this has just come about over the last 24 hours there is no official confirmation from Slimming World yet but watch this space as it will only be a matter of time.

Weetabix say that there are still lots of old stock available but as these run out they will be replaced with the new recipe bars. The picture below shows the difference in packs.

If, like me, you get through a lot of Alpen Light bars then you may want to express your unhappiness with the change by emailing them on [email protected] or leave a message on their FB page. I can't include a link to it here because of group rules but you will find a link on their website at

I'll be stocking up too!! I love the cherry bakewell and apple and sultana flavours. I found some choc orange ones in B&M and they were delicious. I bought up their whole supply I think- they haven't had any more in since I cleared the shelves!

  6. I asked a consultant friend about this just now, and they have been told about it today. Summer Fruit and Double Chocolate will be four syns, the rest will be four and a half.

Apparently Asda will get the new bars first, then other supermarkets. Apparently the packaging will say "New-even more delicious".

When I asked her, I hoped that it was a mistake. Sadly not. Sorry!!

Confirmation is now on the SW website. New bars are also apparently on sale in Tesco despite what it says in the statement. Make sure you complain using the link on the first post!

You may have heard via Facebook about a recent change to Alpen Light bars. We became aware of the changes earlier this week and we know that any change to a Healthy Extra choice is a hot topic for members. So our Food Co-ordination team here at Head Office have been in touch with Weetabix, the company that makes the bars, to find out the facts.

Weetabix have confirmed that Alpen Light bars have been revamped – they’re using a new recipe which contains more calories than the previous version, and considerably less fibre. As a result of the changes, Alpen Light bars can no longer be counted as a Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice. The two Healthy Extra choices for this product which appear on page 28 of the Food Optimising book will not appear in future Food Optimising books or other directories.

The new bars are rolling out into Asda first, followed by other supermarkets. It will take some time for the new recipe to make it into supermarkets so you may still be able to get hold of the old bars for a while yet, but we wanted to make you aware of the change as soon as possible.

As a guide the new style bars say ‘Now… even more delicious!’ on the front of the pack and the higher calorie figure is also displayed on the packaging.

Here are the latest nutritional details we have on the new Alpen Light bars:

Summer Fruit 21g, 79 kcal, 1.8g fibre 4 Syns per bar

Cherry Bakewell 23g, 88 kcal, 2.0g fibre 4½ Syns per bar

Apple Sultana 23g, 86 kcal, 1.9g fibre 4½ Syns per bar

Lemon Drizzle 23g, 85 kcal, 2.0g fibre 4½ Syns per bar

    Chocolate & Fudge 23g, 89 kcal, 2.0g fibre 4½ Syns per bar

Double Chocolate 21g, 81 kcal, 1.8g fibre 4 Syns per bar

    Other Healthy ‘b’ choices

We know many of you will be disappointed about this news. There are still delicious Healthy Extra ‘b’ cereal bars available (see our selection below), and you'll find even more choices in the Food Diary online.

One of our new recipe Peanut Heaven Hi-fi bars
Two Aldi Harvest Morn Benefit 70 cal cereal bars
One Tesco Light Choices Cranberry and Blackcurrant cereal bars
One Kellogg’s Special K Chewy Delight bar

Will the regular Alpen bars still be a Healthy Extra "b"?

At present, one counts as a Healthy Extra "b"

Yes the regular ones are still HEX B but as they are being phased out they will soon be unavailable to buy.

I can't believe they've changed the recipe, I love Alpen lights especially when I'm at uni, I just grab two on my way out and eat them on the way or have one for breakfast in the morning and one at break :(

If we all complain they might do something! I went to the weetabix facebook page and let them know I was not happy and wouldn't be buying them any more.

Honestly they are so yummy as they are so why change them?

i have a box of dark chocolate aplen light bars and they are 70 cal on the box are they still a health extra b?
  13. Revy

    Revy Well-Known Member

yes, the 70 calorie ones you have are still a Healthy Extra B.

I sent them an email to complain, I thought they tasted good as they were before so maybe they only changed the recipe to make production cheaper?

The regular alpen bars have never been a healthy extra sorry. There's not enough fibre to count unfortunately. Some people get confused with two listings for alpens where you can have either one or two, but both are for alpen lights, its just the single bar is a speed option x

This is awful. I struggle to find HEB's that I like, and Alpen Light bars are one of the very few HEB's that I can enjoy. I have written to them as suggested :gen147:, but I feel hopeless to stop this tragedy :rant2::rant2::rant2:
