Hi all. I'm in Ireland, and last week my sister and I joined an Irish slimming club called Unislim, which is based on the GI plan. I lost 6.6lbs and my sis lost 7.8lbs. The best thing for me was that I had so few cravings. I have genuinly felt satisfied and had more energy. I'm reading hee with interest. I keep thinking why is this so easy!!!
Just wanted to say hi. :))

Hi Clarri, welcome to the boards! Congratulations on your loss, that is absolutely fantastic!

There's a few of us on here from Ireland. I didn't realise Unislim was based on the GI principles - years ago when I did it, it was more like weight watchers and I didn't do well on it!

I'm just starting out on the GI/GL way of eating but so far so good! This is a great area for us to share tips, get advice and support. I'm sure Irish Molly will be along at some stage to welcome you - she's the Queen of GL!

Good luck and keep on posting!

Hi Clarri. Great to see more people posting on this forum. I am sure a lot of people follow a GL plan of one sort or another and don't post as GL just does not feel like a diet if you are following the main principles.
I didn't know Unislim was GL based. It's good to know. Well done to you for doing so well so far. It is also fab to have your sister for support. Stick with it. Some weeks losses may slow but overall you will keep losing on it.
Post on here to update on your progress, share your own tips and ask any questions. We all benefit from each other.
My constant mantra is to watch portion sizes and sip at water throughout the day. Drink 2-3 litres. Apparently 80% of the time we feel peckish it is water that our bodies are really looking for!
Good luck for the coming week.

I dont think many know that Unislim are GI based, I certainly didnt. I loved it because I really had no cravings, which is my biggest problem. The great thing bout Unislim is that they arent promoting lots of rubbish foods, that send your blood sugars soaring, and consequently throw you into a swirl of crave! Im going for the 80/20 rule, and if I can manage that, then Im happy. I even had the energy to get up and go for a walk at 7 this morning. Very unheard of!! xx

Hi GL queen!! (feel like I should bow to you!!). Yes, I was a bit shocked at how few are on here, but we will bumph it up!!
Im not great with liquids. I do drink water, but I have got bladder/stress incontinence issues (waiting for app with specialist), so cant manage 2 ltrs. I do drink throughout the day though, so not that I dont IYKWIM! I agree bout portion size. But Im finding that Im not even able to eat as much as I was on other diets! I am now realising that me and white stuff are definitely not friends. (as if I didnt already know it :cool:), but its nice to not be craving and feeling sluggish every afternoon.

I will start to post my food as well.

Thanks for the visits.
xx

Gee, I'm blushing! I'm no queen of GL but I so believe in it. If given a chance it really works. You will only feel hungry if you are eating too many processed or refined foods.

So, food today -

B - 30g bitesize shredded wheat, chopped banana, 2 tspns mixed seeds, lf milk
S - apple
L - chicken, hummus, salad, 1 slice rye & pumpkin bread
D - ham and cottage cheese omlette, salad
melon and yog for snack
highlights hot choc

Food looking good! My only quibble with today's food is your breakfast. Most breakfast cereals are highly processed so may spike your sugar levels and leave you hungry. Banana is high GL so limit the amount of it. The banana and the shreddies together may be a bit too high GL. You need to have a low GL food with a higher one to reduce the overall GL of your meal.
Other days, try porridge instead if the shredded wheat. You can have 50g porridge and half a punnet of berries. Or make up your own muesli using porridge oats, seeds and some dried fruit. Or make a granola.
Of the breakfast cereals 35g of all bran is the best GL choice.
Remember you can have a cooked brekkie, 2 egg omelette or boiled eggs or some bacon etc.
Good luck with it.

This week I've really tried to vary breakfasts - I've had smoothies, pancakes, omelletes. last week porridge, lots of different things.

Shredded wheat has no added anything, and is pure wheat shreds. I do have porridge from time to time but not mad keen. I know bananas are higher gl, but that brek doesnt send me on a craving.
I dont have it every day either, only when I work - 3 days. The other days I have egg or bacon etc. I do mix my brekkies around. Only have the cereal cause I have them when Im in work.
Thanks for the advice though. Appreciated.

As above, I do vary them. Dont like smoothies. I need chew!! lol. x

Hi clarri, I love gl, mainly because I feel great, no craving or headaches and way more energy. Good luck!!

Clarri, that's great that you feel that brekkie fills you best. We each have to find a balance in our menus and get to know what keeps us filled up.
Yep, Shredded wheat and bran flakes would both be a medium GL alright. All Bran would be slightly better as it is less processed plus it has more fibre. All bran has the best fibre content of all cereals though it's not to everyone's taste.
I've noticed that a lot of info on GL is on Australian sites. I may have read somewhere that Gi was devised down under first.
Good luck for tomorrow.

Clarri, food looking fab today. How us your sister getting on this week? When's your next Unislim weigh in? It has to be another good week for you.

Ur food looks lovely, do u mind me asking where/what make is the bread u buy - it sounds lovely. I try and make my own but can't be bothered just at the minute.

Hi SA, that particular one, the pumpkin rye one is from lidls new fresh bread bakery which was basically my bloody downfall yesterday. :-((
I had not 1 but 2 croissants. Don't think I could get much higher on the gl/gi scale which then sent me crashing into a craving afternoon, so if I am to glean anything out of it all, number 1: I now know that gi/gl is most def the way of eating to go for me. Number 2: I really have to remind myself of that. It really was unbelievable what cravings it triggered. Cravings that I just hadn't had since I started. So onwards I go. Had a lovely beef stirfry for dinner though. But lots of Bombay mix. Today will be tough. Going to ikea And will be getting lunch there but will make the best choice I can, then a mothers meal this evening, but I'm doing the veg which will be baby pots and cabbage. Wish me luck.

Ah I can so recognise the downfall high Gi foods cause us. If I have a high Gi wheatbased food early in the day then it can lead to a lit of inappropriate snacking. But at least we know the culprits. We can on occasion consciously choose them but overall they are best avoided.
Enjoy your mothers day dinner. Back on track tomorrow!

Hi clarri, I too get horrible cravings when I eat high gi stuff but you're right, onwards it is :) Enjoy your day!

Well done on ur observations!! Hope u had a lovely evening
