Confused about exercise- help please?

fayhamy

This time its for keeps!
 OK I know exercise is good for you - but does it speed up weight loss or not? Ive read on here about water retention etc but I sweat so much when I run (have a treadmill at home) that I cant see how I'm retaining water?!! The thing is I try and do a run every day alternating between alongish run and interval training - although i'm way over weight my fitness levels have remained quite high. So I want to keep up my exercise but should I run or not on weigh in day and what do people think about this water retention theory....please advise as I dont know what to do and showering every day is ruining my highlights!LOL!!

When you first start exercising your muscles sometimes require extra water to help them repair and recover. As far as I know, if you continue with regular exercise this water retention goes away.

Think about it this way: if everyone who always exercised retained loads of water, Paula Radcliffe would be like a giant water bomb!

Just build in exercise into every day life, don't fret too much about what to do to get the best loss, if you lose 5lbs because you've lost water and not drunk it because of weigh in, then when you do drink you'll just gain it back midweek anyway.
It is not a competition, if you do the same exercise most weeks, it'll even out and just become part of your weightloss rather than tactical.

Thanks although its not tactical its about whats best for me in the long run (pardon the pun)...was concerned when consultant said that exercise doesnt work on sw as I want to get back to running half marathons and therefore need to build on existing exercise whislt following the plan to lose weight

She really says that?? Shame on her.

I run half marathons. I do slimming world. I'd argue running makes the bigger contribution to my weightloss.

I find exercising helps my weight loss. Like Jen said to start with your muscles will hold water to protect them but once you get into a regular routine you will be fine.
Some weeks when Ive not seen the lbs on the scales I have had some good inch losses.
One month I lost 4 inches off my thighs even though Id only lost a couple of lbs.
Now I find if I dont exercise I dont lose as well xxx

I agree with JemmaBe!

I don't run myself yet, but will start very soon. I know that will be the catalyst to enable me to burn the fat when my losses diminish and we get to the "stubborn" stage.

Running 13 miles or so (half-marathon) can only be a great help with weightloss.

As a walker/rambler myself, I suppose diet accounts for most of mine and walking second. I've now added gym to the collection to keep things moving.

I cannot believe that your consultant said that! Slimming world have Body magic to introduce an active lifestyle into the plan, and their own literature actually says it can boost your losses.

I know that the consultants all have their own opinions, but we pay for the consultants to deliver the advice from the specialists who devised the SW plan, not just their own opinions!! I wouldn't pay a personal trainer to give me advice they heard from a friend, I want the professional training!!

There are a few threads on the Jillian Michaels shred so try doing a search.

By the way, I think I would be having a serious word with my consultant if that is the advice shw is giving - it goes against everything SW say.

Yep Ive looked at those thanks - think it is well worthwhile investing£5 ! Want to do running as well as shred or on alternate days is this a good idea or not what does anyone think?
Hi Fayhamy

In my opinion (and only a mere opinion) you will do well to stick with your running for the time being. Yes, it is tempting to mix it up, but running is quite "intense" compared to, for example, my walks and rambling.

Give yourself a few more weeks running, stick to plan with the food, and let's see who is correct. I think (and hope) you'll do really well and give yourself a flying start!

Good luck and I hope it drops off you - if only to prove a point;)

Steve

Thanks so much Maximus, just read your thread on crosstrainer - glad you've slayed the beast! Your circuit routine looks really good and thats why I thought I should be adding in extra but I think you're right I will stick with the running in meantime and then add in dvd when I need to shock my body again!

In retrospect I think what sw consultant was that perhaps exercise wasnt necessary to lose weight but I do think she was giving bad advice. Glad the good folks like yourself are on here! Thanks for advice!

I fairness, my circuits in the gym are for my own benefit. I see people come in and almost kill themselves! - what is the poit and where is the pleasure lol?

I do enjoy it and set the various things for a combination of weightsloss, strength and cardio - mix it up a bit, you know?

Tonight I did 10 minutes on the "beast" (no other word for crosstrainer lol) 1500m (metric mile on the rowing machine (half a mile @ 3.5mph up on grade 15 walking on the treadmill) 1.5 mile on the exercise bike, another 5 minutes on said beast, 1 mile (@3mph) on the treadmill to finish. That took about an hour - just over.

More importantly I enjoyed it - never a chore.

I'd only have been sitting on here getting fat and wasting time...oops! BUSTED! lol

Just read through your entire weight loss thread and it was great! Dont want so appear sexist here (heard enough about that with Gray and Keys) but the way you have embraced sw is really inspiring! we are a similiar height and were a similar weight until you went and lost all that weight before me grrrr so I'm quite confident that if I stick with sw and exercise i will get there too.......and you did it all without a * week!........really think that's toomuch info sometimes!!!!

My friend lost 4.5 stone in 6 months when she was training for a marathon.

It is important that your body has 'rest days' as that's when the muscles get a chance to repair themselves. So maybe on the days you're not running, have a couple of 'easier' workout so that it's not intensive exercise every day.

hi,

i know my body when i am exercising. I have started going to zumba classes and using the wii fit, i gained .5lb last week. My body seems to stuggle to lose weight for a few weeks when i start. It then settles down.
In the long term i know that i will be healthier , fitter and firmer having excercise in my life - plus it is great fun and a bit of time for ME!!!
