I've got a question about how each of us copes with various situations - and looking for help and encouragement with two that I've got coming up!

This afternoon - a 'cream tea' at work - this means scones and jam and proper cream; mini patisserie and mini muffins. I HAVE to go.

Saturday/Sunday - a family barbecue. I haven't told too many people what I'm doing, I don't want this party to be all about MEEEE and I don't want to spend all day/evening justifying what I'm doing to people who probably won't understand why a bit of sausage WILL do me harm, thank you. I'm all sorted with taking packs, blender, bottled water, tetras and even a sneaky bar that my CDC let me buy (am only week 2), that's not a problem, its how on earth do you cope with quietly doing CD and not really making an issue of it when people will definitely be asking 'why aren't you having a cake/burger/glass of wine' ??

Any thoughts, anyone? I am starting to panic a bit, if I'm honest!

I'd go to the Cream Tea afternoon at work if you have to, but you don't have to eat it. Have the tea, with a sweetner.. but stay away from the scones. This is a long term diet and if you think that way, you won't fall at the first hirdle. You don't want to go back to square 1, of the awful few days you have to endure on your week 1. Keep strong, you will feel so much better for it.

Re social get togethers, I am on ss+ so get a small meal once a day, which helps and drink fizzy mineral water when I'm out. At the end of the day, if you want to loose weight on this, then the choice is easy, stick to the plan and you'll be so much more motivated to kick the next hirdle that come's up too. Good luck. xx

Tbh, its a personal decision, there are ways around it ...you can speak queitly before the event to those organising it, you know them - would they be supportive, explain that you're dieting & what diet you're doing & ask for their support. i had one dieter who went to a buffet wedding do & she filled her plate with food & then she literally socialised and chatted 'working' the room...and then eventually, after a decent amount of time, she just put the plate down - secretly - and then when asked said 'oh no I've had plenty thanks'...not one person even guessed - they only get concerned when they think you're not having anything at all - they all saw her with food - tho she didnt eat any, that was not questioned...

I've had others who tell little white lies - 'get a dicky tummy' type of thing ...

At a BBQ - you could always take a small piece of grilled chicken & a green salad ..ala SS+ style...

    debs xx

great thread! I know what you mean, I've got my sons christening followed by a family bbq and dont want it to be about "me"-think I might tell those that know about diet that I dont want to speak about it on the day and I'll stick to a SS+ meal and keep myself busy looking after DS! will have a bit of the cake though-its not any fruit cake, its the top teir of our wedding cake so will have one bit!

Thanks all. I personally am fine with sticking to it, I am very committed and want to do it. its not really about keeping me on the wagon (ok it is a bit) its more about how on earth do you deal with either having to explain it, justify it, get funny looks about it, or trying to keep it secret and hope nobody notices!
Some good tips here tho, so thank you - particularly like the take a plate, circulate and put it down idea...

I'd just say I had blood tests or didn't like cream teas or felt a bit rough or going out for a big meal later and don't want to spoil my appetite.

With the BBQ I'd have chicken and salad and not worry too much.

Good luck with whatever you say!

I definitely agree that working the room with a decoy plate is the way to go. Just be strong and don't be tempted to nibble at what's on the plate though! There's no need to feel like you need to be antisocial on this diet, just be clever in the way you steer people into thinking you're carrying on as normal. I always drink fizzy water and have a stash of peppermint tea bags with me so that I can just ask for a cup of hot water & make my own tea if necessary. I also take a tetra & a bar just in case I'm out longer than expected and start to hear my stomach rumble!
Enjoy both events and you can be secretly smug at how successful you're being!!!

    Hi,

I've been to a couple of buffets now where food was being pushed on me and I put my children's favourite food on my plate and topped their plate up when noone was watching and voila, I'd finished my meal :D. Just help yourself and then wave your fork around a lot - I'm sure that's what celebs do in those burger photos (oh look at me I'm super skinny but still eat burger - click).

As for the cream tea, just say that you don't fancy anything sweet right now or that you had a big lunch. Maybe help yourself to a mini muffin and leave the muffin case in front of you but put the muffin in your bag / bin / wherever. I haven't eaten a meal at work for the past 3 weeks and no one has noticed. People are usually too wrapped up in their own stuff to notice things like what everyone else is eating. Don't make a fuss and no one will notice.

I'm sure it will be a lot easier than you think. At least YOU are in control which is great - it would be so much harder if you desperately wanted to eat those things.

    Good Luck!

All good advice here. I would also say drink your water out of a large wine glass. Some of it is just looking the part! Do you drive? Your excuse is you are the nominated driver!

(A friend has asked me to go out and in the past when we went out, we got my son to drive us. Now I may as well drive because of not drinking and saves me money.)

Thank you all, you give me courage that I can deal with it. Wish I could be the driver - but we're staying in a hotel five mins walk from the event! Huge big family thing, outside, marquee, blah. Lasts from 2pm to when the last person falls down!

I also have a couple of things coming up and thought I'd be the person going round and topping up other people's plates! That way no-one notices what you don't have! Someone once told me she sometimes puts something unusual in her pocket and doesn't tell anyone about it - that way she feels like she's got a secret and it makes her feel good! (very odd friends I have!!) but if you hug the fact your on CD like a secret it might make you feel stronger too! Hope that makes some sense to someone or you'll all think I'm in lala land! Hehe

Ha ha! That made me giggle but I know just what you mean!!! I think you're right, you do feel stronger (and just a tiny bit smug!) sometimes on this diet!

Lots of good advice. I do SS+ which does help with the small allowed meal, but you are in it for the long term, so well done and remember most people will not even notice. X
