Ketosis, Alcohol, and food!

i have decided to have a day off on the 20th december,
its my best friends partners birthday and we have alsways gone out and celebrated,
i will have done 17 days on SS, how do i do this so i can have a few drinks without it harming me?
they are having a chinese buffet which i have decided to have a bit off.
If i eat chicken throught the day would it be safe for me to have a few drinks on the night?
after the 20th im back on SS until christmas day, then 2 days off, then back on for good, no more days off lol!
i just feel like i have to have a treat and i know i can get back on SSing easily.
thank you :)

Hey hun, it is extremely dangerous to eat if you're in ketosis, and if you only eat chicken (which is virtually carb-free) this will keep you in ketosis, so it's still not safe to drink. There's a sticky about this on the main CD forum. Please read it :) for your safety

If you plan to drink you need to kick yourself out of ketosis, so I guess you have to decide if its worth it. If you decide it is then the best sort of carbs are in things like baked potatos... could you have one before you go out and then avoid the food in the evening except for protein?

Serena's title didn't fit
Drinking in ketosis is indeed very dangerous and can make you very sick. As ^ said, please read the sticky about this!

thank you, i will go and read the sticky!!
ive just found this on the net...

Will drinking alcohol affect ketosis?

No and yes. The liver can make ketones out of alcohol, so technically, when you drink you'll continue to produce ketones and so will remain in ketosis. The problem is ... alcohol converts more easily to ketones than fatty acids, so your liver will use the alchol first, in preference to fat. Thus, when you drink, basically your FAT burning is put on hold until all the alcohol is out of your system. This rapid breakdown of alcohol into ketones and acetaldehyde (the intoxicating by-product) ... tends to put low carbers at risk for quicker intoxication ... especially if no other food is consumed to slow absorption.

It dosnt say its dangerous, also i use to drink on the Atkins diet as it said you could have vodka! so im well confused lol

I lurve lurve lurve bars
Im sure Im leaving myself open to abuse being hurled at me here, but,it doesnt say anything in the cd books about going into comas etc,I agree you need to eatif you have a drink..but I just wondered did the information on the sticky come from the cd website.Im not going to advise one way or the other,if you can I would get yourself out of keto to drink, but I was told as long as I ate the carbs as in brocolli or cauli I could drink on 810.
Hmmmm, My DH is a scientist and insists that drinking alcohol whilst in ketosis is very dangerous. I cant remember why, so will get more details from him. I'm thinking of having a drink on my work night out this week (will have done 100 days abstinence by then! ) so we have been discussing the implications.

I can vouch for that, when I was on Atkins induction 2 glasses of red wine would knock me flat, and that's from an ex 8 pints a night man.
OK, this isnt from my DH, but its more or less the same as what he told me:

Alcohol is a powerful inhibitor of gluconeogenesis. In fact, it forces part of the gluconeogenic metabolic process into reverse. This means that if all the glucose in the blood is being derived from gluconeogenesis then the consumption of alcohol will inevitably cause the blood glucose level to fall. Worse still, the alcohol also stops ketone body production, thus leaving the brain entirely without fuel.

A person who is ketotic is 100% reliant on gluconeogenesis to maintain adequate levels of glucose in the blood. If, under these circumstances alcohol is taken, the person will become disorientated and might lose consciousness, not just from the alcohol, but from low blood sugar. Needless to say, this could be very dangerous, and even fatal.

Alcohol does not have these effects if the glycogen stores in the liver are normal. Under these circumstances the blood glucose level in the blood is maintained by the breakdown of liver glycogen, a process that is not influenced by alcohol. If a person becomes confused under these circumstances it is due simply to the pharmacological effects of the alcohol!
thanks for all your advice, i think the best thing for me is to knock myself out of ketosis first, i really dont want to so im considering not going to the night out lol
Don't let it spoil your night Vamp, do you know that you come out of ketosis for a short while every time you have a pack? Its not that big a deal and provided you havent got a belly full of carbs to burn off you should get back to ketosis fairly soon. Enjoy your night and do what you want out of choice, not because you feel you have to. x
aww thank you fishy!!! ( hope you dont mind me calling you that lol)
i really really dont want to eat again, i dont feel ready too so i dont know what to do! its either dont eat and dont drink, or eat carbs so i can drink! Ahhhhhhh lol
