metformin questions

hi
i've heard metformin tablets are very big, i have trouble swallowing tablets and was wondering if you can chew them? i know you can't chew the extended release tablets but what about the regular ones?
has anyone else had similar problems and can give me any tips? i haven't got the tablets yet so don't know if they are extended release or not (hoping they aren't) i haven't even seen the presciption as the doctor rang me to say it was ok for me to have it (she had to ask another doctor first and then left me an answer phone message to say it was being prescribed and someone has picked the presciption up for me)
has anyone had good results from taking metformin? pcos symptoms or pregnancy as we are ttc.
thanks

Hello - I have Pcos, & i was on Metformin for about 5 months. I deffinately don't think you'd be able to chew them at all, the taste is bad enough after swallowing them whole. In regards to did they help, they certainly help with weight loss (if you cut out carbs as well) although they do tend to cause side affects, i felt very faint a lot of the time. I've heard they increase the chance of pregnancy as well so thats good :)

thanks, people have said that you can feel faint on them due to it lowering your blood sugar levels and a few have suggested carrying some grapes around with me, i got the tablets this morning and i thought they were going to be a lot bigger than what they are. think i'm going to either try crushing them up and eating them in a yogurt or getting a pill splitter and taking them in little bits.
really hoping they help with the weight as i need to lose about 12lbs to be prescribed chlomid

Hi, Im on Metforim the sachet form. I cant swollow big tablets, just looking at them makes me feel sick. Ask your doctor about them.

I have had PCOS for 9 years now, it was diagnoised after 2 miscarriages and 1 ectopic. I was orginally told that i would never concieve natuarlly and would need IVF because of this.

Now i have 2 children (born Aug 2008 and Dec 2009) , both concieved naturally.

Good luck and i hope it all works out for you.

the doctor has given me a months supply to start off with and i'm not going to start taking them until next weekend as i have plans this week and i'm worried about the side effects (don't want to be rushing to the loo or bent over with cramps while i'm out) mrsvhall did you have any side effects? how long have you been on metformin? i'll definitely ask the doc about sachet form.

I first started Metforim in 2004 and stopped in December 2007 when i first fell pregnant ( I loss 66lbs over the 3 years) it took me a few months to get use to it, i just felt thirsty all the time. My originally specialist put me on it to try and help with the weight loss. However, Metforim can also make you put weight on ( Since starting it again in April 2011, i have put on 56lbs, however, i am now disabled and have other health problems).

In my opinion, it has worked wonders for me as i have my 2 babies which i spent many years dreaming for. I know once my weight starts coming off, the metformin will continue to help me.

Good luck hun and if you do find that you are struggling, talk to your doctors about the dosage etc.

thanks for the replies, my doctor already thinks i'm strange as i asked for liquid form of another medication i take (he didn't even know they did it in liquid form, when he read about it he said it was normally prescribed to children only haha) whenever i say i chew tablets that are too big like co-codamol he just laughs and says he doesn't know how i can do that because of the taste, but if i do have problems i will definitely ask him to change it.
coming on this site has definitely helped, i think if you know what questions to ask and have read up on things you can get things done a lot quicker and the docs seem to take more notice - i wouldn't even have been diagnosed with pcos if i hadn't insisted on being tested as my periods are quite regular (approx 35 day cycle) (prob tmi) no other symptoms really apart from the weight and trouble ttc even my blood tests came back normal but i asked for a scan just to make sure and luckilly he referred me for one.
thanks again for your reply

Hi Nancynoo, just wondered how you're getting on with Metformin? I have an appointment with a PCOS specialist tomorrow and my doctor has recommended I talk to them about Metformin for weightloss and other PCOS symptoms.
How are you feeling? How have your first few weeks been?

i'm on my second week now, so on 2 tablets a day, i got a pill splitter and i'm managing to take them fine (don't taste as bad as some other meds i've took in the past slightly salty/metallic taste to them). started with 1 last thing at night even though it says to take with breakfast, but people on here and another website suggested night as if you do suffer from side effects you sleep through them and i also took them with a few grapes as i was told that could help too and now taking one in the morning too again with grapes and i've been fine with them, i'm back to see the doctor next week so hopefully it'll show if its helping with weight loss although i don't know if they'd kick in and help that quick, just have to wait and see.
let us know how it goes for you with the specialist, hope it goes well

I've been on metformin for about a month now and it is helping with my weight loss :) I'm also feeling less hungry in-between meals (not sure if that is because of the metformin or not) Hope it works for you too :)

So pleased you're both getting on alright. Feeling quite nervous about my appointment today but will let you know how I get on. Thanks for your replies!

Good luck with the appointment. I have been to a specialist clinic before but had to stop going when I moved away. Now I'm back closer to it I've been referred again and have an appointment next Tuesday :) It might be worth asking them or your GP to refer you to a dietician. I found that very helpful before and am planning to ask for it this time too.

Hello, just thought I'd let you know how I got on yesterday. The specialist I saw was brilliant, really understanding and thorough. I have been prescribed Metformin which I started taking last night. No side effects so far, but still just going to take one a day for the next week. I am also being referred to a dietician which I can't wait for, I really feel I need some guidance with what to eat as I have been on so many diets in the last couple of years my perspective on healthy eating is now quite skewed.
Thanks for all your information and encouragement!

That's great :D It is always best to start slow on metformin. When I first had it my GP just started me taking 3 a day straight off and it was horrible :( Do you have the slow release ones or normal? I'm on slow release and have had no bad side effects. Hope you get to see the dietician soon :) They should be able to give you loads of advice.

Hiya, I've been given the normal ones which I am supposed to take twice a day but I'm doing once for this week. Took my second tonight with dinner, got a few funny twinges in my tummy but nothing too bad so far. Hoping I will be one of the lucky ones! Xx

I don't know anyone that lucky! I tolerate them well but still have the odd rush to the loo. Not that often it happens to me now though. Good luck :)
