Need help - mum is 100% on plan but gaining weight, might do something drastic

My mum and I have been going to Slimming World together for a while now. Recently she has been gaining several pounds each week even though she is following the plan 100%.

I'm sure that she really is sticking to the plan and not sneaking too many syns when I'm not around. Losing weight has made such a huge difference to her self-esteem and mental health that she wouldn't do anything to risk going back how she was before. I can see how much it means to her. Plus she is diabetic and she got cataracts and other problems from eating the wrong foods, so she takes that very seriously.

She has always had this problem of feeling hungry no matter how much she eats. She constantly feels like she hasn't eaten for 12 hours, and often feels more hungry after a meal than before it. She has amazing self control and always eats reasonable portions inspite of this, but recently it has
been worse than normal. (I should point out that one week our consultant persuaded her to eat as much free and superfree food as she needed to make the hunger bearable and she had a massive gain that week.)

She went to the doctor last week and had a full medical with blood tests and all the works, and they found nothing wrong. They can't explain her excessive hunger or her weight gain.

She is desperate to get to her target. It means the world to her. She is terrified of getting "fat" again. She is becoming quite depressed and told me that she has been thinking about starving herself or making herself vomit after she eats.

Can anyone offer any advice?

To be honest you need to go back to the doctor or ask for a second opinion. This doesn't appear to be diet specific and she needs specialist help if this is all the case.

You don't mention mobility and how much exercise she manages to get in each week but if she
is sticking to plan then it would only slow it not stop it or cause a gain. Presumably something like an under active thyroid would show up on blood tests?

Definitely she needs to be back at the doctors getting more tests and pushing for a second opinion. They at the least should refer her to a dietician, they could give her a particular plan to follow which may help them diagnose her problem.

A friend of mine sufferes from Hashimoto's desease which is an autoimmune disorder which effects the thyroid and doesn't always show in blood tests I believe. It took a long long time to get my friend diagnosed and she had to push for a lot of the tests as they can be pricey. The positive news is that my friend lost 100lbs once properly diagnosed!

Although no one on here can give a diagnosis so definitely go back for second opinion and keep pushing. Hope she can get to the bottom of it x

hi

hiya.. she might need more extensive testing.. or google excessive hunger and see what comes up.. sounds to me like something isnt right..

on a different note.. same thing happened to my friend.. she put on 5lb one week and was adamant that she was 100% sticking to plan and i believe she was... however, she is a vegetarian .. then i saw her eating.. and she ATE A LOT OF fruit and veg.. punnets of the stuff - piece after piece!!!!.. she was still overeating even though sticking to the plan..

so SW is a guideline it is not necessarily 100% fool proof.. you over eat you put on weight... regardless of plan or diet you are on.... (unless there is a medical reason..)
