Anyone got one? Any book recommendations?

<Miss Luddite here knows she's getting one for her birthday BUT has refused to check it out because I want a surprise. So I'm happily browsing books to download and wondered whether anyone had something to recommend...>

Or what are you reading now on paper? Might inspire me...

Apparently Amazon do a top (I think it is 50) free books every month that you can download, but you need to be careful as some of them are more than a little fruity:D:D

Fruity's good... I've just come from Amazon... will return anon.

This Kindle thing gets better and better. You'd better PM me those links you have Mouse ;) <joke>

I know my friend downloaded a free book and felt terrible afterwards, worried that it would look as though she had been downloading porn onto her PC!! She reads what they are about first before downloading now!

I once clicked on "something" I shouldn't have INADVERTENTLY on a webpage and a rude pop up appeared on my screen. When I clicked on the "x" to close it, a further FIVE I think OBSCENE pop ups came, and there was I chasing them around the screen before the IT bods came to arrest me! aaaaah! Scarey day that was!

ooooh hello... <straighten up girls, we've a MODERATOR in our midst!>

Nice to meet you... well, I tend to go for crime and murder mysteries, but that's probably because I'm a bit stressed at the moment and living out my fantasies that way. I have ordered Geisha already because I've seen people reading that book on the tube, and thought it would be too big for me to lug around...

I guess I also am still shocked at how much the Kindle cost, so I guess I'd also like my books to be cheap... if not free as I see, on Amazon, that the quality of some of the free ones seems questionable (missing lines, etc...).

:giggle: Im harmless really.

Ive found some sites are hit and miss but Ive downloaded about 150 books to my Kindle since I got it and Ive only deleted one for being poor quality. Ive spent a total of £5 lol

Most of them are just as good and have the cover etc chapters.... theres a few Ive got where the chapters dont maybe start on a new page like in the other versions but thats no big deal ;)

ooooh 150 titles for a fiver sounds like a bargain! anything you recommend? Ooooh and well done on your CENTURY :D

My Kindle is one of my most beloved possessions. I think you are going to love it, Jo.

As has already been suggested, check the top 50 paid-for and free charts on the Kindle page for ideas. Also, take a look at the Kindle discussion forum for loads of information, including details of indie authors, whose books are usually pretty inexpensive. Here's a link to it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/tag/kindle/forum/ref=cm_cd_ecf_sap?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx3IRFCNF3E5K2W

I've not read, but have heard good things about, the following inexpensive books:

The Hanging Shed by Gordon Ferris
Room by Emma Donaghue
Jo Nesbo's books
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo (we thought the stage adaptation with the life-sized horse puppets was astonishing!)
The Gold Acorn by Catherine Cooper (free)

Then there are always the free classics.

If you haven't already read the Steig Larsson trilogy, I'd recommend those. Took me a little while to get into the first book, but then I loved all 3 of them.

I'm currently reading "The Eagle of the Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliffe, but my favourite genres are post-apocalyptical and dystopian. (What a cheerful soul I am.)

I haven't suggested any of my more expensive favourites (over £5), but would be happy to if you don't mind splashing a bit more cash.

Thanks a million! There's some good research for me to do tomorrow...

One downside about walking to work these days is that I have almost halved my daily reading time!

Ha! My eldest got these (he was about 9 at the time). He'd typed 'dames' into google as he wanted to play chinese checkers! Took ages for them to stop! Not good:eek:.

I know in my stash of English, ruined-from-the-bath books, I have a Patricia Cornwell (not overly ruined - hardback - too heavy for the bath;)) if you're interested. Probably other sundries of the police variety too.

Oh and the Millenium trilogy was FAB! (once you get over the characters' names being overly similar in the first book)

Girl with the Dragon tattoo books are good Jo. Im reading Allen Carr at the moment ;) x

AC is the best read... will save you a fortune too in the future :D

Nite all - hairdresser awaits!

I'd echo the comments about the millenium trilogy - I really enjoyed those. I'm a total bookworm and am currently working my way through the contents of Leeds library. I'd been put off an e reader as I can't afford to pay for all my books at the rate I read them but the free ideas are interesting -time for some research I think.

I'll read pretty much anything so some of my tastes might not suit but I'm currently on the third of the black magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan and I'm totally hooked. The harry potter (and dare I say Twilight) books are all well written and have adult appeal and are FAR better than the movies on all counts.

Lee Child writes great books IMO which fall into the crime genre (I think) and I also love everything I've read by Dean Koontz. Patricia Cornwell is also a good read as DD says.

Hope that's given you some food for thought and I'll be investigating some free Kindle book ideas now too - thanks!

Isn't it great how informative this website can be - on random subjects too!

Thanks to all of you.

Emma - I had previously talked OH out of getting one for himself, because I feared that meant no more mooching, no more "real books" to touch and hold - which to me is part of the whole reading experience. But with our both having one, we can swap our kindles between ourselves (VERY interesting Rachel that we can share books... loaning worried me though because you only have 15 days to read them and I mightn't always manage to finish!!).

I believe there is a place in my life for a Kindle... and real touchy feely books!
