OT - Another question for you Turkeyphiles :)

Those of you who know me may be surprised to hear that I enjoy a little tipple now and again :8855:

My question is - can you take duty free in with you? eg vodka? or is it not worth it if it's cheap there?

We always take some to Greece but were advised not to when we went to Morocco - not being in the EU and being a Muslim country. (Although some people did and seemed to get away with it)

Is it worth the bother?

And - can you give me an idea of prices in restaurants? We usually go self catering but we're B&B in Turkey so will be having 2 meals a day out and have no idea how much money to take

Relax girl, yes take Vodka or whatever tipple with you. All spirits are expensive in Turkey, due to tax on anything imported. Even the local gins/vodka's etc are about the same prices as we pay here. We usually take a litre of vodka and brandy in with us, to have a couple at night when we are getting ready to go out etc.

Meals around Icmeler where we go vary from whether you are eating in typical British restaurants, to your Turkish Pide places, which I love.

Breakfasts - you can get full English for about £2. Chicken meals around 14 lira, Steaks from 20 lira upwards, fish is around the same prices as steak. You can also get set meals from about 15 lira, consisting of any starter, main course and desert. These are usually good value.

Personally I love to eat in the places where the Turkish people go to, always freshly made and in clay ovens etc.

Oh another thing, because Phill is such a fussy eater, I usually put a few things in the suitcase to have at lunch times, I usualy take tin of red salmon, some packet soups, block of cathedral city cheese, then I just buy bread and butter over there.

Oooh and Tea bags and coffee, I love to sit on the balcony in the morning relaxing with a hot drink before going downstairs for breakfast.

Another thing I do is take a couple of old tea towels with me, the ones with holes appearing, as a tea towel wont be supplied, I just throw them away at the end of the 2 weeks.

I cant really add anything even although I go over a lot, cause I NEVER PAY !!!!!!! This is the time when I dont have to bother with bills, etc. and it is absolute bliss and Tunc does it all - but I do know that the Turkish cafes/restaurants are expensive and you can get a filled pide on the streets for next to nothing, or a Simit (bread covered in sesame seeds, street sellers sell it- usually like a big giant polo, but bread ;-))! Jan, one of those at lunch time, around 50p or so and it does fill you up if you dont want anything else!!!!

I wouldnt have been able to help you on the booze thing, but we have taken whiskey on occasions as presents, and been ok!

oh, you will be getting all excited now!! Excited for ya!

Great idea, we won't have a fridge though so don't know about the cheese & butter

Kettle already packed Need to get small jars of coffee (I drink decaf DH doesn't) OH! and better put some cups in

I was thinking you were self catering, but some places hire out a fridge if you did want to put anything in there, eg mixers, and I just nip to the bar and ask the guys for some ice for the evening tipple lol

We'd prefer to be Mary but we couldn't find any in Olu Deniz - not saying there isn't any - if we like it maybe we'll be able to have a bit of a scout around while we're there xx

Never been to Olu Deniz, we go to Icmeler twice a year, we love it there. Was quite strange in Salou last week, we were sat there comparing everything with Turkey.

What date do you go on Jan and is it one week or two?

See i never had that experience of Turkey as ours was an all inclusive resort. The only time we really ventured out was a walk to the shops for some chocolate :giggle: and the last day when we did a boat trip - naturally the drinks and beers onboard was a little expensive.

When we was there though they would accept English money aswell as Lira. My hairdresser has just come back from Turkey too and she said when she goes again shes not guna bother taking much Lira as they all loved english money!
