PCOS....

So I'm wondering about PCOS. It's something I've thought about for a while, but I've never been brave enough to bring it up with the doctor. I'm the kind of person that thinks if I ignore something enough it'll go away. It's like when you're a kid, if you put your hands over your eyes and can't see something, it's not real/there!

So anyway, the main things that make me think it are the hair growth and irregular periods. BUT I have an underactive thyroid so the symptoms could be down to that, though I didn't spot any improvement with Thyroxin. My periods are a lot more regular now than they used to be though, think that's due to losing some weight too.

Anyway, are the symptoms likely to just be due to my thyroid problem? Or is PCOS possible/likely too? Any advice or experiences shared would be appreciated!

I have PCOS...I have hair on my chin and chest and round my face, don't get periods any more due to implant but they were irregular, heavy and long. I also get a stupidly strong craving to eat sugar. Anything sweet and I could never get enough to beat the craving. I also get lots of skin tags that are apparently a big sign of PCOS.

did you know we now have a dedicated pcos forum here at minimins :)
lots of advise there
its a possibility hun so if your worried ask your gp to run tests

i was diagnosed at 18 with an ultrasound scan, the cysts were obvious on the scan and the blood tests showed it along with insulin resistancy too
i have irregular periods, excess hair on top lip, chin, a little on side of my face, stomach etc, i also get acne on my face, dark skon patches on my neck, groin, under arms etc

also get skin tags down my sides and on my neck

Am suprised you havent had all those hormones tested as usually when they do your initial thyroid investigations they do them all at once, as the symptoms are so similar and one can kick off the other etc. The results can differ from month to month which i find frustrating. some months my results suggest thyroid underactive, hormones suggest PCOS and other months normal!

I don't really want to go to the doctor though. I don't know why. I hate it. And I've not had good experiences with them listening in the past!

My word, it's like you are describing me!!!! On a positive note though, my symptoms of pcos have lessened a LOT since I have lost weight with cd :):):)

i have pcos - mostly the fine hair on my head (not to the extent many women get it, so i'm NOT complaining!), hair in manly places and of course, overweight. what you're describing is also attributed to an underactive thyroid, but if you're worried, then go to your doctor who will probably refer you to a specialist for tests .

Hi Hon,
I have pcos too... the heavy irregular periods......... and the hair too..
I would just go to the doctor and ask them to send you for a scan to see.. Its always good to know.

Hi, Hope you don't mind me butting in...
I've had irregular periods for as long as I can remeber, Skin tags, bad skin, hair on my belly...not face or anywhere else and now for the past 4 weeks or maybe more I have had really bad trouble with my hair (On my head) falling out, I'm looking bald!!
I 've had all the tests under the sun and one for P.O.S but that came back normal.
Did anyones come back normal but other tests showd it up?
Just seems too real for it to not be P.o.s!!
Anywayh ope someone can offer advice,
Thanks x x
