thankyou for info ... Im just stuck.. trying get into batch cooking and freezing and things like that 3 weeks in and sinking LOL

In addition to the ones already mentioned I would get some:

  • turmeric
  • cumin
  • ground coriander
  • easy garlic
  • easy chilli or chilli powder
  • schwartz garlic italian
These are the ones I turn to time and again. I have a whole host of others but they are your basics. The garlic italian one is a mainstay of all my tomato based pasta dishes.

If you can find an asian food store near you you'll get them a lot cheaper than the supermarket ones.

Lidl sell the basic ones for about 40p each, I picked up oregano and basil today.

wow thankyou

cardamom
dried chili flakes
chill powder
dried coriander
died parsley
dill (loverly with fish)
black peppercorns
chinese five spice (for stir frys)
dried ginger
onion seeds (really wonderful in a curry)
Dried Italian herbs

The list is endless !

if you're feeling extravagant then a couple of threads of saffron in rice is excellent, shame it's more expensive than gold (by weight)!!!

I'd strongly agree with coriander, garam massalla and cardamon.

Good luck and let us know what you think of the spices.

Mustard seeds or powder are good too.

don't forget to get a jar of tabasco too.

Also Asda do a big tub of cajun for about 90p in the spice rack, great on chicken and prawns!
