Would you, could you, should you?

I just can't help but think that these scientists need to use their grants for something a bit more worth while!
For what it's worth amethyst I would never take anything like this either, I was just wondering what everyone thought about what our scientists are wasting government (our) money on.

i know it is sickening, they will never find a cure ffs, makes me so angry! they make up these thing;s and then use our money and our live's ... bet most of them are just placabo anyway..

if you think thats a waste of money how about the government guidelines sent out on how to peel a corrot!

or for nursery schools on how to drink milk

For the record, if it passed human standards, I'd take it in an instant. I absolutely agree that there's better medical science way more worthy of money. But if it was already developed and was gonna make me fit by sitting on the sofa maybe using my slendertone if i was beig extra good, I'd buy a years worth.

I'm with Skatie - I'd use it, for the days when I can't be bothered to go to the gym :p

Would I? - Nah
Could I? - Nah
Should I? - Nah.

I have an amazing body. Might not be too pretty on the outside, but inside is incredible.

All it asks of me is that I feed it well, take it for a brisk walk each day and care for it like I would anything else precious. In return it will do it's very utmost to 'house' me for 80 odd years.

It's amazing how we begrudge it those very few basic needs and do everything possible to find a way to get out of the responsibilities we owe ourselves.

Like amethyst, i haven't even read the article and would say no. There are several benefits to exercising, like enjoying the scenery if you're outdoors, exploring and discovering new interets and strengths about yourself, socialising and meeting new ppl when you work out and making time for yourself and having spiritual awareness through meditation and relaxation techniques such as Yoga. In my opinion, exercising (or staying healthy) should be part of your lifestyle.

Why does eveything have to be reduced to a pill. xx

Why does eveything have to be reduced to a pill.
Because that's what the scientists believe the people want. The government wants to sort out the obesity problem in this country and the sad fact of it is they're not entirely wrong, a lot of people would only do something about their weight issue if it was as easy as taking a pill.
Not everyone with a weight problem are like us guys, we're doing something about our weight problem and we're at a point where we're willing to do it the hard way in order to lose that weight.
A lot of people assume that overweight/obese people are like that because they are just lazy and I bet everyone on here would argue against that stereotyping, right? There is a reason people think that about overweight/obese people, and that reason is that there is quite a large number of people out there that are the size they are because they are lazy and they will never be willing to do anything about that weight unless someone does the hard work for them i.e discover a pill like this one. It's unfair that we all get tarred with the same brush but isn't it the same with every stereotype we have? Teenagers are all knife wielding heathens who are that way because of bad parenting...false...all teenage mothers are only mothers at that age because they are immature and slept around...false, lazy and obese go hand in hand as far as a lot of people are concerned, so these scientists have given obese people a lazy solution (sorry I'm starting to waffle I think!).
Like I said before I would never take these pills but I can understand why they are making them.

i think that there will be many beneficial uses of this drug for many people. it hasn't been devised so that unfit people can become fit. there are many benefits to health that this could give to people who are unable to exercise in the same ways that others can. i think it's an amazing breakthrough. i wouldn't take it. i don't think it should be made available to dieters and athletes. but i do think it's a worthwhile medecine. if you read to the bottom of the article it does list other benefits. the article has just slanted it towards the couch potato brigade. of which i am a lifelong member!!

Just to set the record straight as my dh is a scientist (though he works on skin cancer) - this will not be being paid for by "our" money. Very little scientific research is funded by the government. A lot of research done is privately funded (e.g. cancer research is funded by Cancer Research UK etc and relies on donations) and the drugs industry spends a fortune on developing new drugs. Obviously the obestity / weight management industry is worth a fortune to the drugs companies and it will be them funding the research NOT the government in most cases.
Anyway, on behalf of scientists everywhere, just thought I'd clear that up!!

But in answer to your question, no I wouldn't take it!!!

Likewise i can see huge potential for this drug as mentioned at the ass end of the article - its a pity that this important breakthrough which could benefit many has been reported with the emphasis on other aspects.

And given that the research was carried out in the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California its highly unlikely that this was funded by ANY money from the British Government.

I think it should maybe be given to disabled people who can't do much exercise to help them manage their weight and maybe to the top percent of seriously obese people who can barely walk to their front doors, just until they lose the first few stone.

But anyone who is able to walk for 10 minutes at a time needs to be encouraged to do just that, not sold yet another wonder product.
