Do you have PCOS?

How's the clomid going? have you started it? any side effects? any advice about taking it?

Haven't started this lot yet I came on today so I will start on day 3... The doctor said take for the 5 days no sex for 3 days after the course has finished and then sex every other day after that. Side effects well last time I took them I was 6 stone heavier and they made me feel unhinged I couldn't cope with it but this time I am hoping this doesn't happen otherwise me and my husband may end up going mental lol I really hope these work as I've worked so hard losing weight

How are yo finding the metformin? I was put on it once, but it made me feel so poorly, I don't think I lasted longer than a couple of days xx

Seems absolutely fine - I was quite poorly the first few days but then I was okay. Have a bit of a dodgy tum every now and again but I hope thats the worst of it!

Squirrel - metphormin's terrible for dodgy tummy.. I was unable to leave the house the first couple of times I tried to put myself on it!

Katie - thank you for the reply.. It's really helpful to know.. when you say unhinged were you tearful/sensitive/emotional like pmt can be, or was it different? it's so important to be in the right mood if you're supposed to be enjoying each other's company and when I pretend I'm fine it makes me ten times worse. what kind of feelings/thoughts did it make you feel? we both completely lose our mojo when I'm over sensitive/tearful so that would become pointless!

Keep us posted on how this goes for you.. can you have sex WHILE you're on them?

all the best for you xx who knows.. two weeks from now you might be preggers :D

I can totally relate to what your satin enough - I felt terrible when I tried metformin, think I didn't sleep for 2 nights on the trot due to,,, well the trots and awful nausea :/

And yes katiebaby - good luck to you for the next couple of weeks especially :) xx

As your bleeding when your on them then I won't be having sex when on them so I didn't ask that. I know when I was on them the first time it was different to pmt but then again it's been so long since I had pmt it may have been the same.... I just felt not in control of my thoughts or emotions but saying that my friend took them a couple of times and felt great so it's down to how you are it maybe completely different to me.

Just a quick on I had metformin and couldn't take it as it made me I'll until a lovely young doctor gave to glucophage sR which is slow release and was amazing,,, I had no issues although I don't take them any more as my new doctor said she read a report saying it doesn't help pcos sufferers like they once thought

oooh - I'm only back on them cause I was told I could only have clomid once I was also stable on metphormin... it's so hard to know what's accurate, isn't it..

ps - haha - wasn't really thinking about the fact that you start them while you're on :) ..no.. I wont need to check whether I can either :)

Well I tried metformin and clomid last time but it didn't work simply because I was 19stone something I'm now 13 stone something but the NHS won't give me clomid again and want me to have injections to help but I wanted to try clomid again first and as we were in turkey and my husband being Turkish I got him to take me to a specialist there and he gave me clomid without me asking so I hope it works. Not telling the NHS though lol

Hi Girls...

I was diaognosed last year... worst experience of my life.... Im 23 and having been trying for a baby since i miscarried in 2008 :( Joined Slimming World on Tuesday 2/10/12 in a bid for help... Fed up with all the to'ing and fro'ing from hospital scans and blood tests... irregular period where i dont get any for 3 months then im on for 2months constant!! Wouldnt wish pcos on anyone..

I have excess hair on face, which is a pain because i need to shave all the time..Irregular periods... sore stomach sometimes as if my belly is full of water.. cant ovulate :(

My specialist has agreed to give my ovulation medicine but i need to lose 3st by January 2013. Im 15st 11lb now and hoping to achieve 12st by then.

Thanks for listening to me.. really needed to get that of my chest xxx

I've been there with everything you're describing linds... it can feel like you're so alone with this, but you really aren't alone... and you can get through this and lose the weight... why do you need to lose it by that time frame? You're young.. you have time... Are you now doing a vlcd to lose weight so quickly?

keep us posted... we're all here for you xx

Hi,

Agree with enough - it can feel horrible when you think you are alone, but really you have come to the right place to find support, understanding and good advice.

Did it take long to be diagnosed? I'm 27, so I'm feeling ready now to start a family, now or in the next couple of years, and i feel like the clock is ticking a bit for me, but I try not and worry too much, you have gt a good 5 years behind me, and so I'm sure you will be fine xx are you dong cambridge diet? Xx

I'm 36 starry and there's still hope for me :) ... our best bet is to relax, enjoy, be active, have fun, and have lots of sex, stick to the diet and enjoy getting slimmer, fitter, healthier... we CAN overcome/reduce the pcos symptoms by being active.. by thinking of fun things that accidentally involve moving our bodies.. and then by going out there and doing them.. I know it doesn't feel easy but we can do it :)

LOVE xxxxx

I agree with everything you have said above - we can do this !!!

Didn't mean to sound like I was saying its too late for anyone, sorry if that's how I came across :( xxxx

awww.. no, no, it's ok.. I've lived with that feeling of "I'm running out of time" for many years now, so I know exactly how you feel.. Everything feels so urgent and the difficulty for all of us is that we feel anxious about how urgent it all is, and it's hard to learn to relax and have fun when our whole body is screaming with hurt and sadness and urgency and anxiety.. and yet we have to learn to sooth those feelings and relax and enjoy ourselves.. it's a hard combination...
So the good news is that there is still time

Hi Girls!

Wondering if anyone can help me! This is gonna sound really bad. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004 aged 18, and was basically told come back and see us when you want a baby.

I am now 26 - I dont want a wee one at the moment - but have never been back to the doctors regarding it since but this year decided to take control of my weight as it was getting out of hand. I am now on track with loosing it by following a Low GI diet and my symptoms have been slightly better but I have textbook PCOS. Excess facial hair, no acne but the hair on my head falls out and I of course carrt extra weight round my tummy and more or less absent periods. Ive had a few this year to be fair which is much more than I have ever had.

I am so scared to go to the Doctor about this. Definetly need to go I know but just wondering if anyone has ever felt the same.

xxx

(Hugs to you)

I know exactly how you feel, I battled and battled with my gp for around 5 years, going back and forward to the surgery, having appointment after appointment before they would test me, I had inconclusive blood tests, scans ( external and internal ) and tried the pill, diet pills, diets everything every time I was told by my gp there was nothing wrong with me. Eventually I demanded to be referred, and to be honest i was let down by my local hospital, finally i used my private healthcare ( which I get through work).

As a real supporter of the NHS I honestly feel that i have been let down, whether from my gp, my gp surgery or the specialist. I was referred to under the NHS, I was made to feel like a time waster, was told it was my fault I was overweight ( despite my efforts!!!) my spec's idea of treatment was to try the pill for 6 months, see if that helps.......??

After being referred ( which I had to demand at my local go surgery) my specialist has been great, I've had scans, 2 laparoscopies as I not only have pcos, but I also have quite severe endometriosis and one of my ovaries had hanging cysts, the other one was stuck back to the wall of my ovary,,,,, had. Not claimed privately i would still be on the pill, hoping for my symptoms to get better.........which it wouldn't have, the combination of all these things, un treated could have resulted in infertility !!!!!

If I were you, the best advice i can give is to research research research, tell THEM what YOU want, don't be fobbed off with useless suggestions, which will not help, if I can offer any advice whatsoever ( in my limited knowledge) please let me know.

Xx

Janey - you've done a great job losing weight already! and by low GI/GL too which is the best method for us cysters :)

as you and I both know, it's quite usual with pcos to also feel low and lack confidence, so it's quite usual for us to doubt whether we should be bothering the GP, or whether they will be unable to help... generally GPs are much better informed these days and have a better idea of the serious health effects/risks with pcos so they're better by far than they used to be. It's their job to understand. The difficulty for GPs is that it's a complex syndrome rather than a specific illness, so they tend to end up treating according to which symptom someone's struggling with.. so it's worth thinking about what you're wanting the GP's help with.

You'll get more answers from Home | Verity - PCOS Charity

all the very best and keep posting your progress here.. we're all in this together and it's not easy for any of us, but we don't have to go through it all alone xxxx

I have it too! Suffered from irregular periods when very thin but have put on weight very easily, especially around stomach area. My symptoms have got worse the bigger I've got. The hair growth is the one I hate the most, plus my fear of not ever being able to have children! Hoping my weight loss will show improvements! x

I'm 22 and I've always had irregular periods... However I haven't had a period since May and I started to grow hair under my chin and stomach so about a month ago I went to my Doctor and he checked my blood but everything came back fine, he also referred me to the hospital for a scan which showed that I do infact have Polycystic ovaries... He explained that this is probably part of the reason why I find it hard to loose weight so he's now prescribed Orlistat (Xenical) to help kick start my diet.

I realise that you can't treat PCSO's... The only thing that worries me is not being able to have children when I decide I'm ready.... :(

I'm 26, and was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 and a half years ago. Similarly as others of you, my GP tried to fob me off saying "you don't look like you have it", but rather than just accepting that by looking at my face they could tell, I stuck to my guns, got tested, and would you know it, my suspicions were correct!

Until this year however, I got no help with the diet. All I was told was you have to eat half as much as a normal dieter and exercise twice as much. This year I went back to the GP and told him how I do that, and I've followed WW etc, but still all that happens is I manage to maintain my weight, if I follow it strictly. This is when he told me about the Low GI plan. I followed it, and did manage to lose about 10lbs, but unfortunately, typical for me, I slipped and have struggled to get back to it. That slip was about 4 months ago now, which means I have also put on weight again.

I really need to sort it and myself out. My problem is I spend a lot of time in my own company at home, which in itself is fine, but that's when I also eat a lot, snack on rubbish, and eat to excess. It's like if no one sees me then I'm not really eating it. Which is silly, because obviously I am eating it!

We're all in the same boat, and I just hope with your support, I can get this sorted and I am here to support anyone else who wants or needs it.

xx
