Exante.... is it for me?

Hi there,

have been looking at the exante website and dipping my nose in a few threads on here....

I basically want a diet that will give me a quick weight loss to start me off... I have a party around 20th February so that would be my initial goal....

There is no way I could give up alcohol, however, I will cut right back and could possibly go 2/3 weeks for a kickstart.

Would exante be suitable for me then say a transfer to SW (or would I put back on all I lose)?
How does it work?
What's this Ketosis phase all about?
Any tips/ideas/recommendations?

Oh and how quick do they deliver?

Thanks

xx

Well the main thing is if you cant give up alcohol then no, Exante, or any VLCD isnt going to be for you

I perhaps worded that incorrectly.... I cannot give up alcohol until I get to goal.... I can, however, go until that party without a drink.... Can you use Exante in 4 week bursts with a week off in between... I do not party every week, but would like to know that I can still socialise once a month.

Would it work as a 4 week kickstart (assuming it does arrive within 1 week)

cheers

xx

I think it all depends on the individual. Obviously drinking while on a VLCD is not advised for obvious reasons, but like you i still plan to enjoy the odd night out. Im not a big drinker so when im out i only have a few anyway but im lucky enough for it not to affect me in a bad way. On the other hand there have been people who have became really ill drinking whilst following the diet. Guess u just have to weigh it up.....weve all had to give up things that we dont want to, and its not nice, but the end result will be worth it i guess! In saying that tho, im not a stickler for rules....i tend to follow what my body says. I get away with a few drinks every couple of months, you might not. Good luck whatever yo decide x

I used exante for 6 weeks prior to re-starting sw. I had one night off for a christmas party, didn't over-indulge and got straight back on it the next day, and then didn't lose anything that week. It's not a plan that is designed for nights or weekends off, but that's the trade-off you make for the excellent losses!

I wouldnt recommend it. Im currently in the transition of moving from Exante to WW and yesterday had 24 of the allowed 29 points. This has resulted in a 0.2lb gain on the scales this morning. You cant just go from a VLCD to eating normally or it will just go back on again.

Going into ketosis is hard work!
And you would be doing it so often I wouldn't say it's worth it, because if you do not re-introduce food properly you'll just gain the weight back very quickly! I learnt that from experience

Good luck with your decision only you can make that choice for yourself:)

Thanks for the replies girls, much appreciated.... what is Ketosis and how does it work...?

I am really needing to tackle this... feeling uncomfortable in my large sized clothes....

just about to watch the biggest loser for motivation

Ok not in technical jargon, the body need to give us energy from the food we take, carbs are the easiest way to be absorbed and then give the body energy. If you have too much carbs with sedentary life style it converts what you do not need to fat. Now if you eat protein based meal, protein are difficult to process so the body try to look for any carbohydrate you consumed to use.

When body switch to ketosis, it means the body has gave up on you giving it, the quick fix you normally do and instead of processing the protein you consume it rather melt your stored fat than doing that, that why diets with low carb works.

In that transition normally 3 days to get to ketosis, you feel tired because the body does not have it quick fix to keep you up and give you energy.

“the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly utilize the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon” wiki

Below is a little bit of what I have found on here.
When you start a vlcd you will find the first few days that you may be tired, very hungry, even dizzy.
I personally feel out of it the first few days.

When you first deprive your body of carbohydrates and replace them with protein and fat, the metabolism begins to shift to accommodate this. The first stage is known as lipolysis, and is the initial burning of fat to use as energy.
Ketosis, put simply, is the second part of the process that takes place when your body's metabolism shifts from getting energy from carbohydrates to taking it from fat. When it is taking place, this is the time that you lose the most fat. The name ketosis relates to the blocks fat that are stored for release as energy, which are known as ketones.
Ketosis shouldn't lead to a loss of muscle tissue, unless you are completely out of fat. This makes you even better at burning fat, as you retain the strength throughout your body to do so, particularly in the smaller internal muscles. When ketosis is taking place it is possible to lose up to a stone in little over a week.
The main side effects of ketosis are bad breath and sluggish mobility. Bad breath is caused due to a change in the bacteria and enzymes throughout the digestive system, and slow movement because fat is much harder to use for energy production, making you low on energy. Neither of these are likely to be harmful.
However, if you are diabetic, ketosis can lead to a condition called ketoacidosis, which results in the blood becoming more acidic. This will then cause symptoms including confusion, vomiting, and can even go as far as causing comas and death.
If you want to know if your body is carrying out ketosis, head down to your local chemist and buy ketone testing strips. These operate in a very similar way to universal indicator strips (if you can remember your old chemistry lessons) and will turn purple if ketones are contained in the urine.

In simple terms that i understand....its when the body starts burning fat as energy. Usually you burn calories/carbs but becase its a VLCD and calories/carbs are restricted the body starts burning fat. Usually ketosis leaves u feeling a bit more energetic, less hungry etc. Correct me if im wrong anyone but thats how i understand it.

Just remember tho, it takes a few days to get into ketosis....but only one cheat to knock you out. Good luck hun x

But that'll only be your first week, and itll be water etc. If you allow for a slight gain the first week you eat theres no reason that you should gain after that.

You certainly arent going to put all your weight back on. And besides by your weekly wi that 0.2 might be gone ;)

0.2lb is nothing anyway, only 90grams!

I didn't put on weight when I came off Exante, because I worked up to 'normal' eating over a week or so.

VLCD's have such a bad rep, but honestly, if you follow the instructions you can't go wrong, but it's not a diet you can cheat on and get away with it.

Im living in hope Sandy although just trying to up my calories a little each day to let my body get used to eating more before I start fully. Im not in ketosis so dont have that huge gain to worry about at least.
