I have heard of this.... but dont really have much info about it. I hear if you go to the doctor you can get him to refer you to excercise classes or somthing.

You pay somthing like £12.00 a month and get unlimited access to gym and various classes, they also have specialist classes for people who are refered(sp?)

Has any got refered before or know any more info....?

Thanks

They do that locally here, a girl in my office pays something like £15 for gym membership that should be £40 as she has neck problems and does specific exercises to help her. Why not pop and see your GP and ask ?

I haven't heard this, but wow! Sounds fantastic. I know hospitals do have gyms though. When you find out let me know cos i'd be up for that! I just can't afford gym subscriptions right now.

I had an exercise prescription from my GP ... it was 12 free sessions at the local council-run gym & swimming pool. Not brilliant as most people need more than 12 sessions to achieve anything - but better than nothing.

Different areas operate different schemes - why not ask if your GP offers something (they don't tend to advertise it with a loudhailer like schemes to quit smoking!)

Good suggestion Mike lol!!

Just rang up to make an appointment with the doc's for next tues...so will let you all know. The receptionist didnt really know much about it, but she said that they do refer people in my area! Wooo!:D

In Exeter they run Heart fit, so if you have high blood pressure etc you can go to a special session 3 times a week at the council run gym if your gp refers you. It used to be free i dont know if they have started charging now.

Hi sallies, thanks for the info...from the sounds of it...every area (if they do do it) seems to be running there own version of things.

Also Russiandoll: the sessions that you were given could you do any of the sessions/classes you wanted, or was it limited to certain classes?

thanx!

I would of thought that they would of advertised somthing like this...cos im sure it would benefit so many people. cos i only heard it through a friend of a friend,...and it was just the off chance we were talking about excercise.

You should enquire @ ur gp's michelle....ive got my appoint nxt week...first time im actually looking forward to going to the doctors lol lol

The scheme run by my GP was 12 sessions ... could be gym, swimming or anything they ran at the leisure centre. I guess after that, you were supposed to be 'inspired' enough to then pay to keep going.

As I said though, I don't think personally that 12 sessions is enough to make enough of a change to motivate anyone into carrying on - if you went three times a week, 12 sessions would be gone in a month and in my experience, when you're as overweight as me, you need longer than that to really start feeling that exercise has become a permanent, regular part of your life: I found I still wasn't really enjoying it after that amount of time. When I was at a gym up North, it took a couple of months before I started to semi-enjoy structured exercise.
Still, as I said before, 12 free sessions is better than nothing.

I was told i could get this for stress management because i have to be cautious of my stress levels to prevent geting unwell.

I could go for 10 weeks for the cost of £1 a week and the gyms i could get referred to were pretty good.

I had to get a check up done first to be referred. But the gym i wanted to go to had like a 12 month waiting list and the rest were too out the way for me, so i just forgot about it. But i am going to enquire about the gym again just because i am low on money at the mo, lol.

My dad was also given exercise on perscription because he had a heart attack a year ago and after he finished his physio at the hospital they advised him to continue a little exercise at the gym to make his heart stronger. I dont think he ever got round to enquiring about it tho, lol. He just goes on a long walk every morning.

I have heard about these exercise prescriptions but know nothing about them, sound very interesting. Did realise you could get on if suffereing with stress?

As i suffer with extreme stress & have a long history of depression maybe it may be worth a trip to my GP to have a chat.....

Do you know if it one of these usual post code lotteries? only area offer it whilst others don't???

I used to have a gym membership but found it to expensive so had to council it....xxx

Hi All!

Went to the doc's yesterday and got my referal for Heathwise. I was told it can take a few weeks for it to be processed, but you get full membership for £11.00 a month and can use any of my local run leisure centres. Which is great as im paying 6.25 per water aerobics class:eek:. But not to sure how long its valid for...(untill i get to a healthy bmi?)

When you first join you meet with a trainer and he/she will devise a training plan with you, you get weighed and measured initally and every few weeks you get weighed and measured and your progress is monitored. Was also looking on my local councils websites and they have specially run healthwise classes, am quite looking forward to my discounted rate!!!

The criretia is quite wide to get referred.
Some of the things i can remember are:

Anxiety
Diabetes (sp)
Asthma
High blood pressure
Arthritis
Stress
Depression...and a whole heap of other conditions i didnt even know what they were!
