Eye Test

Anyone know anything about eye tests ??

Paul and I both went to Spec-savers on Monday and had eye tests. They were brilliant, the optician was so thorough.

He has referred me to a specialist at the local hospital for further tests because he wasn't happy with the pressure test on my right eye. I do not understand why.

When we compared notes on our respective tests they varied quite a bit and they were both with the same optician.

I had drops put in my eyes Paul didn't. My test took 20 minutes, Paul's took 10 minutes.

We both need glasses for reading and close work. I already have mine they did them the same day.

We have no complaints about Spec-savers ( they are new here) in fact quite the opposite. We found them to be friendly, helpful and super efficient and there prices are amazing, so reasonable.

Anyway I just wondered if anyone could throw some light on why I need a referral

its not abnormal for every person to need different lengths of tests and its really not abnormal to have different prescriptions... its actually very rare that you are ever the same :p

You'll probably have to see an orthoptic (eye) specialist who will be able to examine and shed some light on the matter. Theres many a reason that could be causing the pressure so don't worry yourself needlessly in the mean time x

Hi Fillymum xx He probably is just being safe and wants to rule out glucoma, this is what they tend to look for, my motherinlaw has this and is totally treatable when caught early enough. Dont worry xxx lots of love xxx

Try not to worry, my mum had the same, turned out she did have Glaucoma which is treated with drops and a tablet. Its best they catch it early, but its very treatable these days. Let us know how you get on x

Like the others have said, the pressure test is for early signs of glaucoma. It's a really useful test as it detects problems way before you would feel any symptoms, and it is so easy to treat if caught early.

Don't worry
I went about 6 weeks ago as I'd be having constant terrible headaches, and thought I'd best have a check up.....I too had a pressure build up in my eyes.....saw an opthamologist, who confirmed that I 'may' develop glaucoma in the future.... If this is a possibility you will be given free annual eye tests to keep a check on it, but as already advised....that's not the only reason for build up, but that's what they're looking out for
On a personal note, my headaches were actually acute migraine (newly developed) and lasted over 2 months due to using over the counter remedies..... Almost back to form now :)

Im an optician so know a little about eye tests!

You will have been referred to an ophthalmologist if the pressure is high to rule out glaucoma, you will also have had extra tests that arent always clinically necessary because of this which is why your test was different than hubbys.

I dont know if the NICE guidelines apply to you over there? but here we now have to refer everyone over a certain pressure reading even without other signs of glaucoma whereas before we wouldve normally just monitored them ourselves and referred once and if thought necessary.

Hope that helps

Im an optician so know a little about eye tests !

Just a tad !!!

I have the letter in front of me it says ( don't know if the initials will translate the same as in English).............

That I had been for a routine check. That I have no actual problems. That my optic nerves are normal but he had detected a high PIO in both eyes.35/22 . Air tone 11:00.

Rx.
OD: + 0.75 -0.50 65 AV = 1.2
OI: + 0.75 -0.25 110 AV + 1.2

I have just realised that OD is right eye and OI is left eye.

Please can you put the client in touch with an oftalmologo to see if she needs treatment for intraocular high pressure
(>30mmHG)

Thank you for your help etc . etc.

That is a rough translation of the text.

I know I am naughty looking at it but I suppose it is human nature even though one knows before opening it that you will not understand a thing.

I went to the hospital today and had further tests.

I had to wait to see the doctor, the tests were done by 2 technicians. I had drops in my eyes that after awhile made my sight quite blurry.

When I eventually got in to see the doctor she did more tests and then explained that the pressure behind both eyes is high and that I have the start of a cataract in my right eye and that that in itself is not a problem but commensurate with my age. Also the cornea in one eye is thicker than in the other.
She has prescribed 2 types of drops one eye just to have one type the other both types.
I have to go back in 15 days. She explained that because of my history (BC) she wants to make sure the drops are working and that the dose is correct and that she would have had me back for a check in any case but not quite so soon.
I came away feeling good about it and not in the least bit concerned even if I did feel partially sighted after the second lot of drops. Paul had to lend me his sunglasses as I could not see properly and in the bright sunlight I could not open my eyes. That took about 2 hours to wear off.
I am mega impressed with my treatment today.

Oh yeah, rub it in why don't you...... did you think you'd got away with that sneaky comment about having to borrow Paul's sunglasses due to the bright sunlight :D

I've had to be referred (pre BC) to our eye hospital twice now due to pressure issues. Mine are different pressures (not mega but more than a tadge) and neither Specsavers nor the consultant could decide which was 'normal' (there appears to be a bit of a range that we can all fall into). Laser surgery back in 2004 may have caused the difference but the consultant was a bit flumoxed cos he said he'd have expected the zapped eye to have shown the high reading but mine was the other way around. Tust me

Maybe he just thought your eyes were that wonderful he wanted to look at them for longer? And have other people look at them too? :)

I don't want to worry you at all but I'm saying this like everyone else they are very thorough!!

My mum had the same about 2 years ago. She went to the eye specialist people in the hospital a week or so later. They put some iodine in her eye to get a better look. They found a 'mole' on her eye ball so nothing to worry about. The opticians rule out glaucoma and diabetes by the 'puff test' and it most likely is an absolute precaution xxxxx

No doubt SHE was taken in by my big hazel , velvets lol !!!!!

It is a bit worrying that the readings have changed a lot in a month. The one that was 35 is now 41 and the other one is up to 29.

Mind you after all yesterdays gunge I did understand how Stevie Wonder feels but b*gger me I still couldn't play the piano when I got home lol !!!!!!

Forgive me being facetious but it is my way of staying positive.

Minimunchkins....................sorry but yes the weather is amazing atm. The skies are a heavenly blue and by lunchtime it is quite warm.

Now are you really cross with me lol !!!!

Thanks everyone for taking the time and the trouble to reply.

Happy New Year everyone.
