For some reason I'm really starting to struggle with the physical effects of Atkins. I feel nauseous and headachy. I had this a bit at the beginning but it soon went but seems to have come back with avengance. I'm definitely in ketosis, without giving you too much info, my wee stinks!! Bit concerned about lower back ache right where my kidneys are....am drinking lots of water now but still feel the same.
I only have around a stone to lose and I'm wondering if Atkins is a bit extreme in my case? Any thoughts lovely peeps??

Sure you aren't coming down with something? There's been flu in this house so we've all been hurting.

    Feel better soon. ((hug))

It shouldnt be the diet giving you kidney pains unless you have been having a lot of alcohol?

Been really good on the alcohol front for the last few days so not sure it's that. I did have slight discomfort in my kidneys when I first started this plan but now it's more noticable. Apparently it's a problem with high protein low carb for around 20% of people :-(

It does happen when yr protein levels are too high, remember that you need to make sure that yr diet is higher in fat (grams wise) than protein or you will experience kidney problems, do you log yr foods on any sites that count, carbs, protein, fats?

I've been logging my food on Fitlog the last few days and I'm having a bit less fat than protein. Not loads but definitely lower! I didn't know about that so that could explain it. Thank you x

The carbs aren't so low, so yr borderline ketosis all the time its when yr in deep ketosis that it happens most I believe, thats why vlcd are much higher in carbs as the ketosis is formed by low calories now low carbs. x

I'd try more fat Joops, if that doesn't help I'd go and have some liver/kidney/blood tests and stuff.

Sorry but smelly wee & hurting kidneys plus feeling rough sounds just like a UTI too(since you already think you are past atkins flu). Straight off to nurse/gp & take a sample - really important if it's making the kidneys ache.

    Get better soon

I thought the amount of water we drink kept UTI's at bay Katie?

Yes it should - but they are sneaky little devils and can just delay the whole thing or hide some of the symptom so not as obvious
