Fern Britton, why couldn't she have been honest?

I know this is nothing about CD, but I wanted to air my views and see what other people think.

I heard yesterday that Fern had a gastric bypass, which is how she lost all of her weight.

I am quite upset with her , as I think she should have been honest from the start. She seems a lovely person and I feel people still would have been behind her irrespective of what weight loss programme she was doing.

All I can say is well done to all those CDers who have managed to lose all their weight themselves without the aid of surgery give yourselves a good old pat on the back. :talk017:

But does losing weight through surgery make it any less important or easier? Why should someone inform everyone that she had a band fitted? And essentially she has lost the weight through eating less and moving more. Good for her is what I say!

Yeah I read about this yesterday and was, like you quite dissapointed that she felt the need to lie.

Although weight loss surgery (IMO) is drastic, I don't see the need to lie about it. If anything it's hardly as bad as some other surgeries that other celebrities have done. At least she's improved her quality of life.

I think that it is her business ... even though she is in the public eye. However she chose to do it is her decision.

No, she dieted to lose her weight. Just had a bit of help with suppressing her appetite like we do with ketosis.

Lucky us to have not felt the need for surgery  We did have ketosis to help us though, but like Fern, we still had to do the job of reducing calories, knocking the chatterbox on the head etc.

BTW, you might like to look here for other views :)

I have lied to people about my diet. I had a lot of negative comments about CD when I started that now I just say I've cut dow what I'm eating and stopped drinking alcohol. Is that a lie?? It is essentially what I have done albeit with the help of CD. I think everyone has a right to a private and to decide who needs to know what.
I think she has done amazing as will all of uson this forum x

I think it was Fern's personal choice and should she really have to tell the whole world she had plastic fanastic fitted:D. Maybe she thought she would get slatted in the press for her decision.

I can't say I blame her for not telling, Alison Hammond who also works for This Morning did the same thing and a national newspaper splashed it all over the papers, and made her out to be a criminal because she was doing a diet article for a woman magazine.

Both these women still have to watch what they eat and exercise just like the rest of us. Does it really matter which route they take to lose their weight.

I have to say, fair play to her. If she had admitted to it at the beginning she would have been ridiculed in the press for doing it in the first place. Its a case of damned if you do, damned if you dont.

I have lied to loads of people about how I managed my weight loss because I dont want the lectures and negative comments, I get enough from my family. Some times you have to down right lie because if you say its none of your business people only become more curious about what you are doing and that has to be 10 times worse when you are in the public eye

We do not own celebs and as far as I am concerned we do not have the right to know personal details of their lives.

    Give the girl a break

I cannot judge her, not told anyone about CD. Its none of their business. I am eating less, its not a lie same as with her. I would probably tell someone if they asked specifically if I was doing it but have never been in that situation. Good on her, she found what works for her.

No perhaps its the reason for success, but its not the reason she had to diet and it doesnt make it any easier for her.

Whatever her reason for dieting it was obviously very serious to her, gastric banding is not something undertaken lightly and is usually a last resort.

I can see both points of views. 1 - Maybe she should have been honest as she is looked upon as a role model for overweight people that 'if she can do it so can I' but on finding out she has had surgery then this makes it seem less accessable to other people who either cannot afford it or feel that surgery is too drastic.
    However...
2 - In the end of the day it is her body and her personal life. I really don't like it when people discuss my weight, can you imagine what that is like to have it in the media?!!! She will have gone through a lot of pain, had to completely change her diet and I'm sure it wasn't easy AT ALL for her. It's not like she did a spread of Closer or Woman's Own or something saying 'My fabulous diet tips - follow this and you'll too will loose weight like I have' (if she did actually do this then please correct me!)

I think she looks fantastic and while I think that surgery should always be the last option, maybe this was the best thing for her personally to do

Well, I've eaten until I felt sick before. I know it's not quite the same, but it still takes a fair amount of willpower to keep on the diet. I've heard of 'band' people that eat well over what they should in terms of calories and continue to eat the wrong foods. Sounds like she's done it 'properly'

I think is just a shame she wasnt a bit more honest, shes now been held up as a great role model for people who believe she lost the weight purely down to exercise and eating which is what has been implied all along.

It might actually have removed some of the negative ideas and the stigma there seems to be about GBs had she 'come clean' at the start. Ultimately she has done fantastically well but I do feel a bit disappointed she hasnt been honest.

That's something that I find so hard to understand, though I do know it happens, but why do people look on them as role models:confused: She's a presenter, that's all. If I was going to have a role model, I'd probably avoid everyone on the TV :D
That's another things that gets me. If people are going to have that as their motivation for doing a diet, they are very likely to fail anyway.

Not getting at you as I agree with most of what you say, you just happened to pick two phrases that I hear over and over again, but really get to me.

Being honest, my main feeling for her is sympathy. She was on a rocky road which ever option she chose right from making the decision to have the GB. We have all had (or nearly had) diets derailled due to outside pressure or events that we turn to food to cope with, so how much harder must that be with the media on your tail constantly.
Being open from the beginning would have been an option if she felt she was strong enough to cope with all the attention, but how many of us have that kind of reserves.
She probably felt she had a greater chance of success and under less pressure keeping it to herself.
As my gran used to say, never judge anyone until you've walked a mile in their shoes ( or words to that effect)

Well, thats her business really. Bet she wanted to appear like she lost all the weight "naturally" rather than have everyone find out she resorted to any kind of surgery. In my personal opinion, there are much bigger people than her in the world who choose to diet just like everyone on here and guess what, they LOSE weight and maintain it! Yes, they put weight back on, but thats down to poor lifestyle and poor dietary habits...Yes, if we all had the money maybe we would have all undergone surgery to look and feel our best, but this is the real world people, and it isnt everyday we can undergo surgery so we resort to "normal diets" such as Cambridge, Lighter Life, WW etc...My point is she could have dieted just like the rest of us. Having lost weight the way she did doesnt appeal to me at all. Not a lot of inspiration and motivation in it one bit- My personal opinion anyway.

I really can't understand these people who are saying that they feel Fern Britton was 'wrong' in the way she lost weight. Who gives a flying fook? She's lost it through whichever way she felt necessary and is healthier for it. Good for her! I can't see why people are taking it personally and are dissappointed in her. Sheesh!
