help! Diet coke chicken went wrong

My diet coke chicken is normally fine, but sunday it went wrong. The diet coke didn't boil away to a syrup and the chicken didn't taste of anything. Does it make a difference if the coke has gone flat? It was proper diet coke. Anyone else ever have this problem?

I used a can for mine, was contemplating making it tonight from a bottle but think I will stick to cans from now on if that's the case!
