To infinity and beyond!
Hi,

I have tried and struggled with CD, finally come to the conclusion, although it is a fantastic diet it is not for me.
I have dabbled with other things, but decided to stick with calorie counting. I lost a great deal of weight years ago counting calories (shame I didn't keep it off:() but find it easier in the supermarket as you know straight off if you can 'afford' it calorie wise, no working out syns or points.

Notice there is not much activity in this forum, surely there are other calorie counters out there?

Im not sure there are many other calorie counters around holly :( Dont let that put you off tho, and if youre posting it may encourage more people.

If it gets too lonely in here you can still post on other forums although youre not doing the diet.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with CC though :)

Good luck Holly, I counted calories for three months and lost 19lbs, so its a very good way to lose weight. Unfortunately I hit a major plateau and had to change diets.

How many calories will you be on? I used between 1500-1750 daily and found I lost about 1.5lbs weekly.

Best wishes,

Hi Starlight and Natalie,

Thanks for your replies, I am on 1500 calories a day, plus 1/2 pint of milk a day. I lost nearly 11 stone this way a few years ago, but didn't keep it off  but at least I know it is works for me.
It has only been two days, so in the honeymoon period, but I feel it is going well at the moment.
Starlight I have been following your progress on WW, you have done fantastically well. Natalie, I have also been following you on the unit diet, which seems great.

Wishing you both the best of luck. :)

At the end of the day counting calories is the surefire way to lose weight. If youy lost 11st before (which by the way is a major achievement in itself) then I am sure you can lose it again.

Best of luck to you and look forward to hearing about your progress. :D

Do you guys stick to a certain fat percentage like they do on Rosemary Conley or do you just stick to a calorie allowance?

I just stick to a calorie allowance, I have looked at RC, but feel it is too strict for me, I think you are only allowed food under 4% fat. I am quite a fan of processed food and like the fact that I can save up and have a treat if I want.

Are you on RC?

Counting calories is what dieters used to do before all these named diets ever appeared. It gives you a really good idea of where the weight is coming from, and now that almost everything has the calorific value on the label it is pretty straightforward.

Hi

I'm curious? Do you guys stick to a certain fat percentage like they do on Rosemary Conley or do you just stick to a calorie allowance?

If you calorie count with weightlossresource, you try to keep kinda close to the what is considered a normal healthy balance of
Carbs 55%,
Protein 15%
Fats 30%

When you get to goal, you just increase the calories.

I am but i'm having trouble sticking with the 5% or less per 100g. Like you i love processed food. But i didn't realise you could lose weight just by counting calories, just seems too easy!

Hi,

Like I said in a previous post I lost nearly 11 stone a few years ago by calorie counting, so it does work.
That said you do learn to 'spend' your calores wisely, ie. having a curly wurly for 120 cals rather than a mars bar for 281. Also processed food is usually higher in calories, but at least there is the option to incorporate it in your diet.

I do think calorie counting is in some ways easier than other diets as the info is on all packets these days, however I feel I lost my weight last time, as my head was in the right place and I would probably have lost the weight regardless of what diet I followed. Just hope I am in the right frame of mind this time too.

P.S. Where did carrot tit come from? :D

Karion,

I am sure I read elsewhere that you calorie count, is this how you lost your weight?
Do you belong to weightlossresource? Would you recommend it?

I started calorie counting 34 years ago at a calorie counting club. 1,000 cals a day, or you were sent down the mines;)

Did it loads of times after as other clubs weren't around. Harder then as items didn't have the cal values on. You had to keep to the menu plan you were given.

Forward 30+ years and yes I CC after I finished Cambridge for a year at maintenance calorie level just so I could relearn portion sizes and normal, healthy eating.

I stopped CCing after a year and now don't diet at all:cool: So I follow nothing now...just put into practice everything I've learnt :)

Yes...would highly recommend wlr. It's fab if you like to CC

Thaks for info Karion, I think that was my big mistake last time when I got to goal, I thought I knew it all and stopped counting calories. Will know better next time.

My first diet about 27 years ago was Limmits biscuits. Then calorie counted on and off with some success. Will have to look at WLR site.

Ahhh yes, I remember Limmit biscuits. I could eat a whole packet in seconds:eek:

Remember those yummy fudgy toffee slimming sweets called Ayds. Can you imagine having a sweet called Ayds these days? :D
They were lovely though.

Yes, I remember Ayds, you had to eat them about 30 minutes before your meal and they were supposed to fill you up and stop you eating more!!

I also used to buy a box of cobs from Boots( I think they were called Energen), they were tiny crusty cobs and were only 23 calories each. Mind you they were only a cob outer it was practically all air inside!!

The things were used to do in the name of slimming :D

A warm welcome to the calorie counting section. I like this approach because it means that I can eat almost anything. I just have to watch the portion size, and keep an eye on the quality of the food I eat.

I remember AYDS very well. I also remember that they were expensive, tasted gorgeous, but did not make me want to eat less. One long (and hungry) evening I cracked and ate the entire box. In one sitting. That, as they say, was that.

When the AIDS epidemic started getting major coverage the product changed its name to AYDSLIM. Later it quietly disappeared.

I was on CD, found it fantastic as far as it goes, but realised that it was fast becoming the only way I could lose weight. Frankly I simply cannot afford it. I am on a low fixed income and now that I am calorie counting I am saving a fortune! Adjusting was very difficult at first, as detailed in my posts, but I have kept my head. I think that if I were to go back to SS for speedy results I would regret it. I don't feel wonderful when SS-ing. I feel weak, tired and depressed.

I miss the choc velvet Tetras. When I can afford to I'll buy some. People always say that you save money VLCD-ing but at almost two pounds per meal CD is NOT cheap. LL is impossibly expensive.

One good habit I have taken from the CD experience is that of drinking more water.

Good luck with your calorie counting, and keep posting.

Hi GG,

I am almost afraid to say it out loud, but I am actually enjoying calorie counting at the moment, hope it lasts.

I just couldn't get my head around CD, then got frustrated that I couldn't do it and so kept trying. Now I have got my head around the fact that it is not the diet for me, I feel far happier. I feel that I can fit CC into everyday life without feeling deprived. I sm meeting a friend on Tuesday for a meal, I know that I will have to choose carefully and watch my portions, but it is still possible to join in.
The water was probably the thing I found hardest on CD, not a fan and the flavourings were not much better. However it is very nice to be able to have the odd glass of pepsi max and I am drinking lots of orange squash too.

Weigh in is on Tuesday and for once I am quite looking forward to it.

I enjoy calorie counting, too, and I know exactly why you feel almost guilty about that, and also why you feel this great feeling might not last!

Oh, the joys of diet cola and other fizzy drinks. No worries about citric acid or coming out of ketosis... I just ate a scrummy Hovis wholemeal roll with a little butter. Delicious.

I used to get paranoid about carbs. When fruit and vegetables began to strike me as sinful and almost dangerous I realised I was developing a problem. LOL.

Weight loss is much slower, of course. This month has been hectic with lots of holidaying, socialising and dashing around. So I expect no loss tomorrow. That's fine. Next month I will make up for it!

For me it is essential to be able to eat regular food. I spent longer on CD than I'd originally intended, 'cos I'd get to six days of SS then cheat! That was the main problem - I couldn't stick to it for weeks on end. I did manage four weeks right at the beginning, but that was IT. Eating ordinary healthy food is what I think of as normal and 'right'. It's also the kind of eating plan I find the most difficult over a long period of time!

But I could not bear to regain my lost weight, so I have to knuckle down. This is not just a diet, it is for life.

I agree that the weight loss on CD is fabulous, that is why I so wanted it to work for me. I know CC will be the scenic route, but as long as I get there in the end and more importantly stay there this time.

I think my trouble is it takes my head a long time to catch up with weight loss/gain. When I got to target last time and I would walk past a shop window and catch a glimpse of myself I was always shocked at how good I looked.
Equally I have only just really registered what a state I am at the moment, I always convinced myself that at 5' 10" I could carry off some extra weight, which is true to an extent, just not this much extra. I have been looking at this same reflection in the mirror for ages, but it is only recently that I have realised just how hugely overweight I am.

I am hoping this realisation will spur me on to sticking to my new eating regime.

Do you weigh in at home or belong to a club? Good luck anyway.
