Licking the Lid of Life....my esoteric diary

I'm glad you enjoyed group, and it's great that your consultant recognised your previous achievements!

On a side note, someone at my group last night mentioned the "but muscle is heavier than fat" thing (they had gained but joined a gym!), and I thought the consultant was going to spontaneously combust! He has obviously had to explain this many times before!

With regard to this particular 'thing' ... I particularly love that people think one session at the gym and a stroll round the park with the dog is enough to turn fat into lean muscle anyway :rotflmao:

BeeBeeSee I also hate the term 'Body Magic' and therefore refuse to have any truck with it ;)

I'm glad you enjoyed group Sam, and it's great that your achievements so far are being properly recognised too - WITH shiny stickers!!!! :D

Ha, the "lady who weighs" at my group has little stickers, and my inner four year old loves them - I got one that said "excellent work" last night!

LOL! ... the 'lady who weighs' at my group is a good crafting friend of mine and she has a whole HOUSE full of stickers and pretty paper and ribbons and, and, and -everything. It is awesome :D (and so is she! )

Awww I miss the care bears. Do not underestimate the joy of stickers!

Btw Your sw gospel is brill. Made me have a giggle:D

No. 8: weight fluctuates. If you must weigh daily don't be surprised if it's different in the evening to what it was in the morning/yesterday/at WI etc. (And a binge on junk food often results in a large 'gain' because it's salty and makes you retain water but it'll probably be gone tomorrow).

No. 9: one meal off plan does not mean you need to blow the diet. It may have a temporary effect - see 8) above. (I still have to fight this tendency).

Glad you enjoyed Group. Retained history, a round of applause, raffle prize AND stickers - wowzers!!!

Very true, and very important too, to not view it as a free pass to unlimited food and drink

Another thing that constantly amazes me. Someone at the group may have had a gain. A "substantial" one, let's say 2 or 3lb. And it's not their totm and they insist that it was one mouthful of something "naughty" or one chocolate bar that did it. First of all, the body isn't a machine, you throw a coin of a certain value in and you get the same result every time. Secondly, one snack off plan does not result in a gain. I really don't believe that. Otherwise we would be surrounded by people who are slim one day and overweight the next because they had a big indulgent totally over the normal calorie limit meal. Am I being too harsh? Yea. Probably.

So true when I used to go to group so many would blame their gain on one particular food item, eaten once. Calories in vs calories out so how is it possible.

I'm far too truthful as when asked where I'd gone wrong it was usually a long list. ;)

I think that weight loss is actually more complex than many non "dieters" realise. My husband for one doesn't get it, the struggle and how easy it is to make excuses and blame everything other than yourself. To him its all EAT LESS CAKE AND MOVE MORE. Yes in its purest form it's that simple but in reality if it were that easy without all of the psychological and physiological draws of food we would be a nation of skinnie Minnie's. Clearly we are not. We are one of the most obese nations in the world. Yes that's our fault predominantly BUT other factors are at play. No the one snack or one meal off plan won't affect you long term but what will is food education, seeing people spend money on unhealthy foods that pass on bad habits to their children because of the often prohibitive costs of quote unquote healthy eating. That is self perpetuating. Its a cycle. We are the lucky chosen few. We have the keys. Personally I think our government should be ashamed of itself. For a myriad of reasons (don't even get me started on Gove) but not least because our NHS is straining at the seams dealing with people who have been allowed to become ill due to poor nutrition, smoking, narcotics. Drugs maybe but the other problems are not really accounted for.

Of course they may just be greedy ;) either way.

Totally agree I know the eat less, exercise more mantra. It's been said to me so many times. It's not a lie it is true if I eat less and exercise more I will lose weight ,but you're right about it been so much more complex. I first put on weight as a teenager when father terminally ill, huge comfort eating as it was plaster to a wound. Then afterwards for years and even now struggling to change my habit of turning to food. Some in my family turned to alcohol so I guess it could have been a worse vice.

I can mirror that. When my mum died when I was a teenager my dad over compensated by feeding feeding feeding to show he could cope so I learnt to associate food with comfort and shows of affection. Its only now that I can really recognise this and recognising it has led to changing it. We are complex beasts and I have always wondered why some of of us are like this whilst others seem immune.

Ooh number 10: YES you can drink/eat dirty maccy d's/have costa/ eat candy floss and generally enjoy life but NO You can't do it every week/night/meal and expect to lose weight steadily. Unless you are an addict then these are CHOICES you make. Wants rather than needs. I NEED to lose weight. I don't NEED a packet of hula hoops.

Although, to be fair, green and blacks 70% with burnt toffee is actually listed in article 41 of the human rights act. So that's ok. (That's not true. Article 41 relates to the fixed tenure of judges in the ECHR - yes you can put me down as your phone a friend. Specialist subject : "crap no normal person needs to know")

It's a mystery why some people are like that and others eat normally and never even think about it. I guess we all different and similar at the same time:p

Hahahahahahahahahaha! This made me laugh!

Number 10 is brill.

Think sw should include them in the documentations. ;)

Everyone has different coping mechanisms I think ... my husband also doesn't 'get' my issues with food at all. He's one of those people who eats because he has to but he takes no real pleasure in it. On the other hand he's a people pleaser, because he's comforted by being liked. It can be just as self destructive as overeating though in it's own way. I think that modern life is just so stressful that we ALL self soothe in some way or another ... our way is just more visible than most.

For me my overeating goes back to early childhood - my Mother was pretty much incapable of emotional connection, so her way of showing affection was to feed people. If you rejected the food she gave you, that was interpreted as a rejection of her, which she then punished. I learned early not to be fussy about food, to clear my plate and ask for seconds wherever possible because eating was the only thing I got rewarded for. As I got older, the food itself became the comfort.

revelations

losing weight has had many advantages. Today I found a new one. I can wear a hat. I have always wanted to be able to wear a jaunty straw summer hat. A kind of festival boho style trilby. Took madam into H&M today in search of a lightweight cardi for her to throw over t-shirts and I let her choose a new summer hat. Low and behold she opted for the straw trilby in miniature and it's the CUTEST thing I have ever seen. She made me try it on and despite it obviously sitting high on my fully grown head (physically fully grown, mentally waiting to catch up) it looked really good. Hair down is an essential but I have ordered myself a grown up version. I'm thinking with my maxi dress and some sandals I'm all summer chic. Up until this point I have not been able to wear one. No not because my head was fat. I could LITERALLY wear one but my hamster cheeks meant it looked like it was perched on a bowling ball. The best way to accessorise a hat is with cheekbones I have discovered!! When it arrives I will post a pic.

I may add this to the NSV thread as I am genuinely really chuffed. Oh and I bought size 12 knickers. They fit. Whoop!!

Hahahaha!! Hope you don't mind me popping in- I've just read through the last few pages of your diary and I really felt like I needed to contribute:-

No.11 Mullet lights- yes most of them are free but they are not compulsory. You do not have to eat them, you can find cheaper alternatives and just because they are free, it does not mean that you should eat 5 a day!!!!
