Post Break Up Body

Goodness, it's been 5 days. What on earth have I been eating.

Ok Tuesday I had to catch the train to Bayonne. I had a muffin on the train. Then a sausage bean cheese melt at St pancras (Greggs is such a weakness for me), and I bought a Mac and cheese and croissant from Pret for dinner on the Eurostar. I worked it out around 290 calories.

Wednesday I ate a pain au chocolate, plus a filet mignon lunch and then a pasta salad with brie for dinner and 4 small glasses of wine. No idea about calories. Welcome to France, I guess.

Thursday I had a piece of bread with jam and a mini croissant, plus jamon Serrano and bread for lunch, then a thinned mackerel and rice veggie 300 calorie dinner, plus 2 cans of fizzy drink. No idea about calories again.

Friday I started walking the Camino. 25km uphill today. Had a pain au raisin and an apple on the walk, then a pilgrim meal of veg soup fish and chips and a Cornetto, plus about a bottle of wine.

Saturday I covered 21km. I ate a Spanish omelette for brekky and 2/3 of a carafe of sangria at the end town. Went for pilgrim meal of potato salad, veal cutlet and peaches in syrup.

Having a wonderful time. Meeting lots of new people and always someone to share a meal or a walk with. Still feeling strong. No blisters or sore muscles. I think all the exercise last week really helped me to prepare.

Glad to hear you're having a wonderful time. The pilgrim meals sound amazing!

A quick update for two more days on the trail

Sunday, had a croissant with jam, mini muffin, tangerine and orange juice for breakfast on the way to Pamplona. At Pamplona met up with people for a glass of wine and an Aperol spritz in the sunshine. A potato tortilla for lunch and pork shoulder and potato with 3 wine glasses for dinner. Very hard to eat vegetables on this trip.

Monday. Walked to Puenta and ate a piece of baguette with cheese, fried egg and Serrano. Then a glass of wine with another pilgrim I met at the end. I had 4 glasses of wine before dinner and then salad, chicken and chips and a cheesecake and another 2 glasses of wine.

This trip is turning out a lot more boozy than I expected. It's like backpacking, but for middle-aged people. Having a wonderful time.

Another update.

Tuesday - walked 21km on a cold and overcast day. Stopped after 13kms and had a tortilla. Another pilgrim had left her body warmer in the last town so I found her to return it and had a bit of manchego and a glass of wine. In town we went for pintxos (tapas in the local dialect) at a bar. 4 glasses of wine and a mussel croquette and a pickle with tuna. For dinner shared a large salad and paella with another 2 glasses of wine.

Wednesday - walked 28kms in beautiful sunshine. The first day that I have worn shorts. Stopped at a food truck for an omelette. Saw some familiar faces at a cafe after 21kms and was offered a small beer. At the town for the night had 4 glasses of wine in a beautiful courtyard. For dinner I had a burrata salad and another glass of wine.

Lovely to join you on your pilgrim way. Thank you.

Thursday - well they don't call it Thirsty Thursday for nothing. Had an omelette sandwich for breakfast. Arrived in Logroño at 11am after a 21km walk and had a grape juice in the square.

In the afternoon, a group went out for tapas. Logroño is quite famous for tapas and Rioja si you can guess the result. Over a bottle of wine and 6 tapas. Then rush back before the albergue locks us out at 10pm. Sleep time then up to do it all again.

Friday - lots to write down today. Woke up feeling a bit worse for wear. Hit the road at 6am for a 30km walk averaging 6kmph. Had a pastry halfway and had to stop at an honesty box fridge near the end to get a coke and an ice pop for some sugar.

Once in town, I had quite a bit to eat as I felt quite weak. A mushroom cheese and egg bocadillo, a tortilla, a hamburger and some patatas bravas plus another coke and two glasses of grape juice. No alcohol for once.

Forgot to keep this updated. Let's see how well I have remembered. I have definitely been eating more as the walk progresses.

Saturday - 22kms. Had a Spanish version of pain au chocolate for breakfast (they make it super chocolatey), then half a tuna sandwich for a snack. At the end of the walk there was a festival so we had a few drinks plus a bacon bocadillo some patatas bravas and croquettes to share. For dinner, I had a pilgrims dinner of asparagus, meatballs and chips & apple tart with wine.

Sunday - 23kms. Had orange juice and another pain au chocolate for breakfast. A couple of breaded chicken wings and patatas bravas after the walk, then a pilgrims meal of white bean and chorizo soup then chicken leg and chips and a creme caramel for desert. Plus a couple of glasses of sangria.

Monday - 26kms. Found a great breakfast spot and had spinach and scrambled egg on toast and orange juice. After the walk I had a carbonara and for dinner a pizza and a pastry. There were very few options in town. About 3 glasses of wine.

Tuesday - 28kms. For breakfast, had a giant chocolate eclair pastry. After the walk, had about 6 different tapas dishes and a small slice of pizza. Also had 4 glasses of wine and a gin and tonic.

Wednesday - 21kms. Had a pain au chocolate for breakfast plus an apple pastry after the walk and an apple. For dinner had a great meal of chickpeas and cabbage starter, then aubergine. Had many glasses of wine and polished off all the white in the small bar.

Thursday - 21kms. Had a tortilla for breakfast and half a pizza baguette and a few biscuits after the walk. I had some biscuits as a snack. For dinner, I ate pumpkin soup and pork with mashed potato, plus a dessert of cheese and quince. A couple of glasses of wine with dinner.

I am in awe!

Friday - 27kms. had an apple tart for brekky, then some nuts at the bar and a glass of wine after the walk. Had a white bean and chorizo stew with bread for lunch with a glass of wine, then 3 mini pastries in the afternoon. For dinner, the pilgrims meal was pumpkin soup, trout and chips and an ice cream with another few glasses of wine.

Saturday - 22kms. had a mini pastry before setting off. Stopped for a chorizo, fried egg and cheese roll for breakfast, then had a slice of watermelon on the middle of the walk. After the walk, had a couple of glasses of wine and a glass of gin and tonic before a pilgrim dinner of goat cheese salad, blood sausage, and "cheesecake".

Sunday - 27kms. Ate a croissant before leaving town. Then ate a few cherries through the walk and stopped for an orange juice at a bar. We had pre-made 6 inch sandwiches and grapes for the road which were really needed as the day was quite hot and draining. After the walk we had a few glasses of wine and ate some olives and pork scratchings. Also enjoyed an ice lolly. For pilgrims dinner, we had pumpkin soup, pork and chips, and stewed apples along with some wine.

Monday - 30kms. Walked out of the albergue with a group of 7 and stopped for toast with tomato and olive oil. Had a wholemeal croissant (what a mistake - had major food envy) and a mini pastry. Had a couple of sweeties and then enjoyed tortilla and chorizo after the walk with 4 glasses of wine. For pilgrim dinner ate lentil soup, chicken and chips and a lemon yoghurt with a couple of glasses of wine.

Tuesday - 24kms. No facilites on this walk so bought supplies the night before. Stopped halfway for a nectarine and half a chocolate waffle. After the walk ate a huge pre-made sandwich and drank 1.5 litres of orange electrolyte drink. Had many glasses of wine along with free tapas (tortillas, olives, chorizo, etc). For pilgrims dinner ate lentil soup, chicken and chips and rice pudding with a couple of glasses of wine.

Wednesday - 20kms. Had tortilla at a pub halfway on the walk and a mini cupcake near the end of the walk. Afterward had 4 glasses of wine and burrata salad and some nuts. Bought a double scoop cone and then ate a family size packet of crisps.

Have picked up a cold the last couple of days so fighting that off/ probably passing it on to others as I go along.

wow those are still some great distances, and sounds like you're getting to meet people along the way.

Hope the cold passes quickly!
