Pregnancy and Slimming World

1. A breastfeeding mother has to be obsessive about what she eats.

Not true! A breastfeeding mother should try to eat a balanced diet, but neither needs to eat any special foods nor avoid certain foods. A breastfeeding mother does not need to drink milk in order to make milk. A breastfeeding mother does not need to avoid spicy foods, garlic, cabbage or alcohol. A breastfeeding mother should eat a normal healthful diet. Although there are situations when something the mother eats may affect the baby, this is unusual. Most commonly, "colic", "gassiness" and crying can be improved by changing breastfeeding techniques, rather than changing the mother's diet.

sorry I disagree, I have been told by the specialists that you have to avoid certain foods along with NHS guidelines, see below for details:

Foods to avoid
Eating fish is good for your health, but don't have more than two portions of oily fish a week. Oily fish includes fresh tuna (not canned tuna, because the good fats are lost in the canning process), mackerel, sardines and trout. Read more about the health benefits of eating fish.

There's a limit for oily fish for women because oily fish can contain low levels of pollutants, which can build up in the body and affect the development of a future baby.
The general advice for all adults is to avoid eating more than one portion of shark, swordfish or marlin a week because of the mercury contained in these fish. Avoid these fish altogether during pregnancy or if you’re trying to get pregnant.
Small amounts of what you're eating and drinking can pass to your baby through your breast milk. If you think a food that you’re eating is affecting your baby and they're unsettled, talk to your GP or health visitor, or contact the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212.
Caffeine
Drinks containing caffeine can affect your baby and may keep them awake. While your baby is young, drink caffeinated drinks occasionally rather than every day.
Caffeine occurs naturally in many foods and drinks, including coffee, tea and chocolate. It’s also added to some soft drinks and energy drinks, and to some cold and flu remedies.
It's important not to have too much caffeine. Try decaffeinated tea and coffee, herbal teas, 100% fruit juice or mineral water. Limit your intake of energy drinks, which may be high in caffeine.
Peanuts
If you'd like to eat peanuts or foods containing peanuts (such as peanut butter) while breastfeeding, you can choose to do so as part of a healthy balanced diet. Don't eat them if you're allergic to them. Ask your health professional for more information.
There's no clear evidence that eating peanuts while breastfeeding affects your baby’s chances of developing a peanut allergy. If you have any questions or concerns, discuss them with your GP, midwife or health visitor, or another health professional.
For more information, go to Food allergies.

Alcohol
Alcohol passes through to breastfed babies in very small amounts. It’s unlikely that having an occasional drink will harm you or your baby, but it might affect how easily your baby feeds. So when breastfeeding, it's probably sensible to drink very little. For example, no more than 1 or 2 units once or twice a week.
If you intend to drink more than this on a special occasion, you might want to think about expressing milk in advance for your babysitter.
It's not safe to get drunk when you’re caring for a baby, whether they're breastfed or bottle fed. And when you’ve been drinking a fair amount of alcohol, never share a bed or sofa with your baby. If you sleep heavily, you could put your baby at risk.
One unit of alcohol is approximately a single (25ml) measure of spirits, half a pint of beer or half a standard (175ml) glass of wine, although it depends on the strength of the drink.

Although a definately agree with the balance diet!

hi ladies

had my 16 week appointment today with my doc and she give me a quick scan! was lovely seeing the baby again and seeing that its got bigger and was just chilling out in there!

havent bn able to stick to plan at all over the last 2 weeks, have wanted to eat cereal way too much but i suppose thats better than chocolate and crisps eh?? lol

hope u are all well and crystal i can only imagine how hard yesterday was for you and i think your husband is very very sweet! xxx

Yes I agree about the fish with the pollutants in the sea etc.. peanuts, I craved peanuts last mth of both my pregnancies (normally don't like them) and I didn't eat them while breastfeeding.. I was told that peanuts allergies are very common in young children and even just the peanut oil on your fingers could be a problem if you eat them and then touch your baby..

My family has no history of nut allergies.. And my midwife advised that almonds were good for milk production so used to eat a handful a day :)

I don't drink alcohol, but do drink diet coke.. About half to 1 can a day.. Most days.. Didn't effect my pregnancy or my baby sleeping, I also don't drink Coffee or tea so caffeine levels were low ish..

Was told loads fresh fruit and veggies, 1 cup skimmed milk a day, lean meat etc plus a multi vit aimed at breastfeeding mums.
AND USE your common sense lol

Also when tired try to avoid the comfort foods like choc, crisps, cookies lol!!

All good advise and if you can stick to it your pregnancy weight disappears..

Most of mine did.. And then crept back when I was not watching :)

Well Crystal I have to say I would love to be able to give you a big, fat massive ((((HUG))))

I am a lurker on this thread as I am secretly (or not so secret anymore) very broody and love reading about everyone's pregnancies and how they are getting on. I hope one day, in the not TOO distant future, to be able to join you ladies! :)

Anyway, I have felt the need to pipe up as after reading your post Crystal I just felt the need to say (and I hope you don't mind!!):

1. I'm so sorry for your loss and for the hard time you have had in the past with your babies - your 2 boys sound perfect now. Losing a baby must be the hardest thing a mother can EVER go through - massive hugs for you babes!
2. Congratulations on baking a little girl - a lovely addition for your family.
3. Your birthday celebration for Leo sounds lovely as well as heartbreaking - I hope you are able to find some peace in doing this every year and in the beautiful children you have and are about to have….
4. Your husband sounds like a babe! Wish my OH would take some lessons off lovely men like him….. ;)

That's all really! xxxx

I wish I was confident as you but get in a state due to having autism and take things black and white. But great advice and thank you :)

Hi Ladies,

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and everything is fine with baby boy! :D:D Because we had the scan at FMU we got 8 photos for free, my sister and my 2 year old came with us and the little one was watching the baby on the TV screen saying "That's my baby brother, he's got big hasn't he Mummy?" hehe bless her!! She's going to have a bad case of the green eyed monster when he arrives!!

I have been on my own today as Hubby is at work and the little one is at nursery so I have spent all day sorting clothes out, we have 2 bin bags full of girls clothes to give away and a bag of blankets/grobags etc to give to Hubby's friend who has just had a girl. Our little one is finally going into 18-24month size clothes which means a shopping spree for me tomorrow (hooray!).

How is everyone else getting on? Foodwise I've been quite good, I've eaten a peach and strawberries for breakfast and then some wholemeal toast with Utterly Butterly on for lunch. I think we're going to have either Quorn Chilli or Quorn Spag Bol for tea :)

BF'ing wise

I don't drink alcohol - I don't see the point of avoiding it for 9 months just to pass it in breast milk.
I eat peanut butter as I'm not allergic
Oily fish I try to eat 2 portions a week for the EFA's
And caffiene I stick to same as when I was pregnant

I'm now expressing milk for the special baby/preemie unit and all this has been approved and rated as fine by the co-ordinatopr hospital.

Hi all you yummy mums to be!

Had physio on Tues left side of hip tilted so no wonder i was in pain front n back! It was manipulated back in place and was given exercises to do...............has it worked? Noticed a difference walking about yesterday but bed time still a major problem, back at work today so will see how sitting down goes! Got another appointment next Tues so will see if its been a naughty hip! lol
Nursery coming along nicely, yay, sorted through lots of clothes i've been given.....wow.......overwhelmed! Could you possibly have too many clothes? Panicked too cos i haven't got a clue what they wear, will need my sisters help on that score! Trying to get organised with all the coupons i've managed to pick up along the way and get stuff, mainly nappies, whilst i have money off, it all helps! Will check out Asda baby event, Morrisons also have one on at the mo! Also going to my first nearly new sale next Sat, gonna see what bargains i can pick up though i don't need alot of stuff( i think? lol).

Welcome all newbies
Hugs for you Crystal xx

Hey JoJo,

You joined Boots baby club - they send vounchers to me yesterday and one is a free one for baby avent bottle as well as 25% of nipple cream or boots breast pads.

Hope the physio helps with your hip x

I puked up big time last night and now I am paying for it, as I am sooooooooooo thirsty and cannot stop drinking, I feel like a bloody fish from the effects of the dyhydration.

Be careful with vomiting, if you keep vomiting for over a couple of hours go to hospital!

I had a bad vomiting bug while pregnant (last 2 mths) and ended in hospital up on a drip, very dehydrated. Had to have injection to stop me vomiting.

Long sleeve Vests with poppers and all in ones are fab for 1st couple of mths.. My babies were big long boys so I bought 0-3 mths. (12lbs and 10lbs 4oz )) didn't even use newborn didn't fit!!

Altho I love all the pretty girl stuff for new borns.. Sigh but had boys :)

Huggies wet wipes are good, the yellowish pack, softer and thicker and you use less.. Don't feel so plasticy

saw a poster at midwife appt and thought 'why not?'. There's loads of centres up and down the country and it's so easy!

That is fantastic! :)

Lexi, im hoping once Penny is settled and i have a good supply flowing again ( as this disruption with her refusing my right has damaged my supply a little these past few days) but im hoping once we are established if im still producing this much milk i'd really like to do it myself!

Hi all

Bunny, yep have joined every baby club known to man pmsl! Funny enough got my Boots vouchers yesterday , was thinking of going for the avent bottles over tommy tippee ones anyway. The 3 in one steamer not cheap, they doing this in Morrisons for about £30-35? I'd have been happy with a cold water steriliser but my Hubs seems to have issues with them for some reason....wierdo lol!
Work........not much change at all with my hips in work, still a killer getting out my chair. Back at physio Tues anyway. Another girl I know posted some lovely pics on FB , of her with brace on and crutches due to her pgp . Don't think i'm that bad or am i and just trying to be brave and get through it?! Still not had a DSE assessment at work, they take the pee! Still i'm on reduced hrs now which i seem to be coping better with especially starting at 8am instead of 6am!
Heartburn pretty bad atm , not stopping me eating though and unfortunately all bad stuff.......maybe thats why lol!
Honeymoon offically booked for 2 wks time.........woop woop :D off to Benidorm (1st timer) for a wk, quite part though so I can really chill out. Will be very odd going away and not drinking! At least it will be a cheap holiday lol :D#

Hi Everyone Im 9 weeks pregnant with second child (8 year gap!) feel like Im doing for the first time again. Before getting pregnant did really well losing weight through exercise and calorie counting then let a stone creep back on over the summer. So Ive come back to slimming world to try and prevent massive weight gain! The nausea and food aversions are improving so seems like a good time to start :)
