Taking up running

yes, doing a cancer research 10k run on 12 Oct - so not long to go now!

aargh!

Wow, good luck with that.

Maybe I'll be able to join you next October!! lol :giggle:

My sis and I took part in the race 4 life in July. That was 5k. I really enjoyed it and we've vowed to do it every year (knee's permitting!)

Hopefully I will be able to move up to 10k (heart permitting!) but I just look forward 2 becoming fitter!

I realised the other day when I was jogging down the lane to meet my dad how much fitter I feel now.

I've still got such a long way to go, but right now it feels achievable considering how far i've already come.

It really is possible for anyone if i can do it!

Well done Trimlee, that's great. So where did you find that podcast stuff??
Thanks Frijj,
Go online to iTunes store you can find them under the audiopodcasts section using the search button.
1)Podrunner: intervals
2)Podcasts for running: couch to 5k
Both are free to download to your iPod

Good going Jenny! I'll aim to do at least a 5k charity run next year. How do you train?

Everyone is doing so well! Good on you all x

I have been running today and had to give up half way through my jog due to shin pain.

I've had a niggling pain since I had shin splints about 4 weeks ago but with the jogging this week it's gotten really painful. I was so annoyed because I'm really enjoying it at the moment and was feeling fantastic for having made a start.

I'm going to put my training on hold at the moment I think to avoid making it worse, just until I can afford to get some really good trainers, I suspect this and running on hard ground/treadmill may be the cause. (Currently broke until my student loan comes through so hopefully I can get those trainers soonish rather than later!) Does anyone know if taping up your shins could help? I'm just putting ice on them at the moment and ibuprofen gel to help the inflammation.
:wave_cry:
Unfortunately there's not enough grassy areas by where I live to be able to soften the impact that way. I'm feeling so down about this!

I think what you're doing is already the best thing really for them. I get pain in my shins too, so i try and rest for at least a day in between runs, but if i have a couple of days it improves so much more too.

When your loan comes through and you hit the shops, try and find a running shop that will fit the trainers for you. I think quite a lot of them have treadmills where they watch your running Gait and work out what trainers are best for you. Because they're proper running shops they usually really try and find what's best too rather than just what's the most expensive.

Hi Jenny, Hi RachelM, Hi everyone!
I hope your shins feel better Rachel.
I have just completed week 1 of the couch to 5K programme. It feels good but is hard work still! 8 weeks more to go!

You'll get there in no time - it's amazing how quickly you notice the difference.

Are you actually doing a 5km run at the end of it or just following the training schedule?

Okay, this thread has really excited me!

About a month ago I printed off the Cancer Research 10km plan and wanted to start following it, and even though I went to the gym still, I never got into it. In fact, I jogged half a mile while on hols in Norfolk a couple weeks back, and managed a minutes jog/run last night on the treadmill before I gave up!

So, thanks to this thread I'm going to start it this Monday (I know, start now, but I like starting a new on a weekday - its the only way I get a routine!!)

Thank you for inspriation - you've all done so well - I will be posting my plans so you can all nag me to do it :D

Good Luck with it - that's the training programme i'm doing, so i do hope you find it good. it's worked so far for me and i was an unfit lardy - now i'm just lardy!

Hi Jenny, I'm just following the schedule for now. I'm looking to do a run next year. I'll be so glad when I'm fitter! Thanks for the encouragement.

We look forward to hearing from you Em; let's go for it!

Ooh it's great that everyone has found a programme that they're comfortable with. I can't wait to hear the success stories I know are coming!
Are there any particular runs that people would like to complete in the future? I would love to do the New York marathon but thats a LONG LONG way off haha x

Every year when I get up on that Sunday and watch the London marathon I always say.."I wish I could do that, but I just can't".

About 3 years ago, I said that I would like to at least attempt by 10 years. But then I did nothing to improve my fitness!

I'm still think that by 7 years I want to have tried, and this is my first step towards that!

I tend to need big targets that I can work towards!

Actually, on the Cancer Research website there is a training schedule/guide that takes you through 5km, 10km, half marathons and marathons. Basically, you follow the programme the whole way through the seperate distances training and then you progress up! Good way to get your running fitness up even if you don't want to do the event at the end!

My dream is the London Marathon! I would like to do that in 2010. Next year I aim to go for a smaller one, but not decided on which yet.

Imagine me running for an hour and not out of breath..!!

You're all putting me to shame!! lol

I don't think I'd ever contemplate a marathon. I think I'd be happy doing 5K & 10K runs.

I guess all the charity ones will be good to do as you'll be helping others out too. x

I'm on podrunner intervals week 2 of 9 now! I'm feeling pleased, yay!

Hiya, I started running 5 years go and like flumpster remember leaving my house at 6 in the morning (to avoid detection), looking down the street at a lampost and thinking I'll just run to there...and not making it and thinking this is not for me.....even so I persevered and as well as losing 3 stone in weight, ran the London Marathon in 2005 and assorted other races. Unfortunately i thought I deserved a nice rest after the marathon....a rest which lasted 2 and a half years.

If I suggested anything it would be a pair of trainers to suit your gait. These need not be expensive. I overpronate and get terrible knee pain if I run in the wrong trainers. Let us know how you get on - good luck!

I think my shin splints are almost healed and I've been doing some shin strengthening exercises too, so it's off to the specialist running shop for some new trainers next week yay! I can't wait )

Wow, well done Misha. That is encouraging. A few months ago I was also doing that run-to-the-next-lampost thing, failing and thinking it was not for me. I lost about 3 stone on Lipotrim and now I'm training towards 5K. I'd be so pleased to run a whole marathon!

Glad to hear it Rachel!
