Hopefully!
Well I have made a decision regarding an operation on my jaw. The last time I saw my consultant he told me to look up everything I could on jaw realignment surgery, particularly the bad stuff, to see if it would be a route I'd be prepared to go down. I have suffered for years with terrible headaches, clamping, locking, clicking and general pain in my jaw joint (tmj) and all the symptom relief I have been offered so far hasn't been much good. The only thing left to try is medication that would mean having to give up my job. I am not prepared to give up my job and nor do I want to spend the rest of my life on nasty medication. I have looked up all I can and found some very interesting information. One dentist describes it as 'The surgical equivalent of a car crash'. People who have had it done say that the surgery is horrific but totally worth it in the end. My consultant has said that there is no guarantee that it will cure my problem but not having it done is a guarantee of not solving it!
SO the op involves breaking the jaw and resetting it in the correct position. It's about a 3 or 4 night stay in hospital followed by 6 weeks recovery, 4 weeks of that will be with jaws wired shut to allow the jaw to set in the correct position. Apparently you are not allowed a mirror in the hospital as you are so swollen and bruised that it is not nice to look at. It all sounds very nasty. BUT if this is what will cure my problem it will all be worth it in the end.
The real cruncher for my decision is this: I have heard that the NHS are going to be withdrawing this surgery except for very extreme cases and to have this done privately costs in the region of 10k! So if I say no now I may never have the chance again. It takes about 2 years to get the op so I would still have time to change my mind later if I wanted to.
