thinking of starting atkins

dancing,

Thank you so much for all your help - would be lost without you. I got 2 x Atkins books yesterday, 1 the actual book and a kinda weight loss journal thing as well. I am going to start on the 19th and stick with the induction for 4 weeks (2 weeks hard core and then relax a little for the second 2 weeks). Thanks to your help and the books i feel very positive about this and well informed which i think are the main things! Anything but to have to try and SS again!!!
How are you getting on, when is week 1 over? Am dying to hear your total loss, you're a real inspiration to me!!!

found my books this morning, the diet revolution and dr atkins quick easy new diet cookbook, I remember from last time I didnt like the americanism wordings for food and cups of etc, I suppose with time I will be able to adapt my own way, but its nice especially doing the 2 weeks induction to get it spot on.

I have the recipt for basic protein bread, but to buy from a supermarket what is good regarding bread or crispbreads, I now they say rye, so would that be rye ryvitas, could someone let me know

Hi Everyone

I am watching this thread with interest.

I've just re started CD and seem to be doing fine at the moment but I am a real low carb fan and intend to eat this way when I get to goal.

Dancing I thought your post the other day about too much protein was really interesting. I believe you get the best weight loss results when you keep the fat content really high and the protein moderate. This is always something I have struggled with.

With Atkins I always go into really deep ketosis but with CD, where we have a minimum of 42g of carbs a day, I struggle. A few days last week I felt I had to eat and had chicken or fish with salad but only had 2 CD packs. I felt much better and less hungry.

Oh for those not doing induction Burgen bread has around 10g of carbs a slice.

Edited to add that Eat Fat Get Thin by Barry Groves is a good book written from a British perspective.

well that told me then, must remember to take my reading glasses to work tonight. :)

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to add that when I did a high protein diet (not atkins so it could be different) I was able to eat plenty of nuts, ones particularly low in carbs were almonds, brazil, pinenuts and walnuts. They are great for getting fiber into the diet, and great for having a tasty snack, or toasting and putting over a salad to add a bit of flavour.

I was allowed onions on my diet, they were recommended to be taken daily due to their high vitamin and mineral content and their anti-oxident properties. They have approx 4g of carbs per 100g

I would also recommend buying a carb counter book, i got one of the Collins little gems, it is actually a calorie counter but it lists carb contents too.

Best of luck to you all

did a lot of reading last night, and it all fell in place for me.

I did atkins years ago with some success, but I had forgotten it all.

a year ago I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance and have struggled with weight gain around my middle causing concerns for my health. If you dont believe me, just look at my before LL gallery pics!! (eww not a pretty sight). Anyhow since I completed LL which was end of September last year I have crept up about 10 to 12lbs, I know this is not too bad but those pounds have firmly blubbed around my middle.

Before I started LL I always had a problem eating bread, pasta, cereals and potatoes, I put it down to IBS and a wheat intolerance, well, after my read of atkins book last night, it sooooo all fell into place. I tried WW, and yes to a certain extent worked a little, but because I enjoy those above mentioned foods I always counted them into my daily points, hence the struggle to actually lose anything substantial.

I think I might have just found out how to shift this last stone and be able to maintain easier, due to this medical problem.
So thankyou Dancing the read was the best thing.

Am thinking of starting Atkins again too after leaving it since about 2003! I remember last time eating a lot of jelly and cream in order to have a sweet treat as it's low carb?

I could have writen this.

I'm so sad at the moment. I'm on CD and I've done well, but need to shift about another stone to get under the recommended BMI. I'm doing CD 810 - 1000...and I've not lost now in nearly three weeks. I'm not bloody eating at all during the day....just two shakes and then I have Chicken Salad for tea or Fish or prawn stir fry. I don't know whats happened, but I cannot seem to lose any more. I'm thinking that my metabolism has totally stopped. I may introduce a Atkins style brekky a CD Tetra for lunch and an Atkins style meal for Tea...what do you recon guys????? I'm thinking I need to kick start my metabolism again! I've stayed in ketosis the whole time, but not lost. How can that be?

:party0011:I have to tell you ladies...I just went for a walk in the sunshine and happened to pop into Boots...there on the shelves next to the Slim Fast were some Atkins goodies...including Endulge chocolate bars at 1g and 2g per bar respectively...oh my God! If you need a chocolate fix...these are the things for you

just a quickie, you can have sugar free jelly, are the little hartley sachets ok

It should say on the bar in a lovely circle on the front how many carbs there are...the ones I bought were between 2 & 3g per bar and they were strawberry crisp and chocolate chip crisp.
As regards reading labels...on our food here, we just read the carb content as it...in the states, they separate the carbs and just count what they call "net carbs"...I think thats the way it works

Can anyone please help me with portion sizes on Induction for Atkins? Apologies for all the confusion, tying to get my head in the right gear before starting Atkins on Monday!
In the book for Induction it says that we are allowed 2-3 handfulls of salad (leaves etc) during the day. However Dancing in an earlier thread mentioned 200 - 320g of salad being allowed? I am very confused as in my mind a handful is a little amount, whereas 300g of salad sounds and is a lot!
Is anyone on induction at the moment and can help me with some menu ideas?
I am planning on having something like the following on an average day -
2 x egg omlette with ham/bacon
chicken breast, egg and some leaves, cucumber and peppers for lunch
Fish/chicken with a some stir fry veg for dinner.

Is the suger free jelly you are talking about the little pots that are ready made up for sale?

Sorry for all the questions but despite reading the book i am still very confused and i need this diet to work and fast!!!

i've been looking in every holland and barratt for atkins bars and they don't seem to do them anymore. So thanks for this tip - I'll go check Boots out and hopefully my local one stocks them too

In fact, i think I'll go in the next hour! Fingers crossed for me

Boots had an offer online for buy two get one free!

I've decided that my weight has come to a stand still now with CD. I'm in the process of re-reading my New Diet Revolution book by the wonderful Mr Atkins. I've not been out of Ketosis now for about two months. Its wonderful that I'm not hungry, but I want to lose the last bit of weight! I wonder if I do Atkins for two meals and a tetra...do you think that will work? I'm worried last time I did Atkins I ate way too many eggs....at the end of the day they are full of Colesterol (spelling?). I struggled with breakfast and I'm thinking that maybe a tetra for breakfast and then two Atkins meals? Advice please guys....I'm finding my will weakening now. I will stick to a diet, as long as it works, but when weeks have gone by and no weight loss, then that is when my resolve weakens.

Mine is the original orange and blue covered book. To be honest i prefer the grammes cause what the funk is a cup of veggies?? Like how much is that supposed to be?
What book do you have, maybe its a UK version and i have a US version? Does your defo say that amount for the induction phase?

mine is definitely for the induction phase. Mine is the original orange and blue book. Looks like it is the UK version (published 2003). However you measure it though - 2-3 handfuls of salad doesn't equal 230 - 300+ grams of salad!!!

How annoying for you.

Mine says the same as yours Dancing. 230 - 340g (8-12oz) of salad Veggies plus 140-200g (5-7oz) 'other' veggies as long as salad does not exceed 230g (8oz).

Hi ladies I hope you dont mind if I jump in but I have just got to the end of my second week on CD and have 24 lbs left to lose but I am finding the whole "not eating" thing really difficult. We do a lot of socialising and it is already impacting my relationship with my husband. Giving up the wine isnt a problem but not being happy going to BBQ's etc is!! I have ordered the Atkins books and hope they will arrive any day so I thought I would stick CD for another 2 weeks and then look at moving to this diet. Do you still get good weight loss? I only lost 6 1/2lb with CD on my first week and I suspect I've lost another couple of lbs this week so aslong as I can lose about 2 lb a week I will be happy. I hope you dont mind me jumping in but you are all so clued up on this I think I may need some help from an expert or two :)

Right, that's it at lunchtime i am off to hunt down the book with the gram measurements!!
2-3 cupfulls of salad is sod all ie approx 5 lettuce leafs and there is no way hosay i can live on that!!

Thanks for all the help guys! Will be starting a diary on here on Monday - fingers corssed this works for me and more inportantly i can stick with it!!!
