Re: Thyroid Troubles, EE and Green days with Photos

Hi Moira, I'm so pleased for you, well done!
I have to say that your meal out is one I would love to tuck into!!
I'm sorry to hear your tum is playing up. I'm starting to wonder if I have ibs, I'm getting bad stomach cramps a lot now. Then again it might be stress, or chopping and changing from binge eating to dieting on a daily basis! :banghead:

For all the coffee lovers I found a post on making iced coffee and tried it with great results tonight

I used 1 tsp of coffee granules ( caramel flavour ) 3 level tsp of sweetener, 50 ml semi skimmed milk, small glass water and 4 ice cubes
Blitz all this in a blender and serve with a straw cos it tends to settle. Not bad at all to taste

Costa coffee coolers, small size using semi skimmed milk are listed as kcal 262 so aprox 13 syns
I know it's not exactly the same but this works out at about 1 1/2 for the milk, so I will defenitly be making this again x

Hi Racheldubljn
Welcome to the thread, the best advice I can give you is to try and relax now you have your diagnosis of under active thyroid,
it's something we all have for life and I for one do not plan to stress about it for the rest of my days
I know you probably feel awful now but that wont last long cos Once your meds are at the correct dose you will start to feel much better, the weight will come off, it may come off slowly but it will come off
Some quick questions Rachel.......
When were u diagnosed ?
Who do you attend ? Doctor or endocrinologist ?
What meds are u on ?
What dosage ?
Do you know what tests you had done ? TSH , free t4 ?
Do u know what your blood results were ?

Are you doing ww or slimming world ?
I've done both and find sw much easier for weight loss and its more of a lifestyle change rather than a diet we need to lose the weight and keep it off
I had planned to go to Dublin today for the sales but couldn't make it, will probably be next week now. I'm sure there will still be plenty of bargains left anyway, chat to you later x

Are you doing ww or slimming world ? - ww 3 years now and I've lost barely anything :-(

This Isn't me I'm usually such a positive person :-(

just saw your post and wanted to say...
i did ww for almost 2 years...i thought it was great and lost 2 stone within 6 months and then i just got stuck and gained...i wasted my money for the last year, was eating like a sparrow and the weight was on and off with me gaining a stone of my loss before i cancelled my membership??!!!!

i looked over the sw stuff for weeks when i was considering switching (to see how do-able it was for me), had 4 weeks off any plan (over xmas and new year) and joined sw at the beginning of january.

i've now lost 2 stones on the sw plan...and really...how can i complain when i'm eating proper, healthy meals, lots of fruit and veg and having a wee bit of chocolate and some crisps EVERY day!
people have now started commenting on my loss and i tell them i've lost 2 stone since CANCELLING my ww and that i've stopped eating processed foods....all true!

for sw, you definitely need to be prepared...i spend all day on a monday cooking things which i can snack on at work but the biggest change for me is that when i'm hungry, it's cos my body's processed what i've last eaten and i'm ready to eat again...NOT because i've only used 2 points by lunch time just so i can have something decent at night....or because i'm saving my points to get a goody at the weekend!

i've now replaced the crappy wee microwave meals for things like burgers (made from extra lean mince) chips (sw style of course lol) and lots of other food that just seems "bad" when reality is...its how it's made that means i can have it guilt free!

it took me 17 days on the sw plan to realise that for the 1st time in my life, i wasn't having the same thoughts i'd had that consumed my whole life...thoughts of what i wanted to eat, what i couldn't have cos it was bad, but god i really wanted it and oooh i'm hungry, how many calories/points in that...oh sh1t i've had it now so i may as well beat myself up for it and whilst i know we're all different, that was a huge change for me.
my thoughts are now consumed with things like...oooh what can i make this time, what meat etc do i have in the freezer that i can make something new from...what are we doing later so that i can fit it all around it etc.

i seem to have a pattern where i have a gain 1 week out of 4 but to be honest, i don't feel as stressed by it cos my frame of mind is different in the sense that i think..aww well, what'll be will be, i'm sure my body will sort it out next week.

i've stuck to plan 100% and of course we all want a loss every week but i don't feel as disheartened when it doesn't happen or i don't get the amount i want....cos on ww, i would say no to so much cos i was "being good"...then go to class and have a 3lb gain!
it was so disheartening and a vicious circle cos in the end, i was like pffft...had a gain from eating nothing i wanted...may as well eat what i want now!

i have no expectations when i go to get weighed at sw....i'm more than happy to plod along doing what i've been doing with no pressure to myself cos i really feel that it's a change of what you eat.
i thought ww was great cos i could still eat what i wanted...but that meant still eating crap that didn't fill me then having no points when i was hungry and in my case, i wouldn't go over the allowance.
of course as i lost weight, the daily points allowance went down and that made it harder!

its so difficult when we're unhappy with ourselves and especially our weight and there's not a diet i haven't tried or don't know what it's about but i'd say...if you think you could, you should really consider sw.
i was wary cos i thought..oh ....if pasta and sauce, savoury rice and mugshots etc are free...i'd just eat them cos i could and i don't need to be hungry to eat....but it's really NOT been the case (for me)
the cooking keeps me busy and ww is more handy for grabbing things for lunch etc when you're out but like i said, if you're prepared, then it's great.
i really believe until you've had a weight problem, no one can really know how hard it is...how much guilt we give ourselves and how low we can get but the support on here is great x

Xmisskx thanks so much for your reply,

It's great to have ppl here to talk to it really is,

My fear has always been that I'd be one of those people who joins all plans and never looses,

I don't know what I'm afraid of but I feel loosing weight and the depression of it is taking over my life :-(

I'm the same Rachel .. I lost 1 n half stone a couple of years ago then my weight loss just stopped & was diagnosed underactive thyroid & also previous type1 diabetic did sw, gained half a stone, re joined ww and didn't loose anything ... And now still heavier .. Been on sw now a couple of weeks - lost 3lb in first week - sts second ... It was proving hopeful after the first week but now I feel like that's it for me. Your not alone hun ! Stick at it tho - best thing is your making your body healthy regardless of weight loss or not :) xxx

Evening Rachel, just seen your reply now. Thanks for you answers, I don't know how much you know about how your thyroid works and I appreciate how new this all is for you so I will keep it as simple as possible.

You had a blood test to measure TSH and your result was 9.6 ok
The correct numbers need to be between 0.2 and 4.0 . Eventually your doctor will give you enough eltroxin to have you between 1.0 and 2.0

The starting dose is 50 mcg and it takes between 4 to 6 weeks to build up in you and then your doctor will check your bloods again and increase your eltroxin if he needs to. The eltroxin is increased slowly so your body can get used to it and to keep side effects to a minimum,

The TSH will start to come down from 9.6 now that you are on eltroxin but I'm going to be honest here and tell you that it's only when you get close to the 4 or 5 will you find it easy to lose weight ok .
Stop putting yourself under pressure to lose weight now until you are better, if you had a broken leg you would not expect to run a marathon, you would wait till it was better first
so be it with your thyroid
You will lose weight when its at the right level so start looking forward to that now ok

All the things you are feeling are Normal now,it's only because your TSH is 9.6 . The more those numbers come down the better you are going to feel.
No matter how bad you feel now..... You have to tell yourself that you are nearly better and what you need now is patience to get the correct dose of medicine for you.
As far as diets are concerned what you need to do now is to eat healthy and really listen to the advice given to you by "" missk " I could not have said if better myself
SW is very easy to do once you get your head around it and if I were you now I would spend the next few weeks by joining a class ,you need to have the books !!! And with the help of your consultant or us here start planning your meals, use this time when your waiting for your TSH to come down to really get the hang of eating the slimming world way and when your TSH is right the weight will fall off you.
Sending you a big hug cos I know your having a rotten time at the minute but remember Rachel your getting better every day ,now all you need is patience ....
