Preventative things like Psyllium husks add fibre and are OK. You can get them in capsule form from Holland and Barrett and take them three times a day with lots of water.

Cures such as Dulcolax and Sennakot are fine to alleviate immediate problems but you shouldn't make a habit of using them too often as they can make the bowel lazy.
