Avatar/Picture Help

Am a newbie and it may sound stupid but how can I add a pic of myself on here like everyone else when they post, they have an avatar or a pic of them? I've gone to control panel and edit avatar option but all thats there is a "dont use avatar" option and no other buttons to uncheck/unselect this... not very user friendly if you ask me...
