Day 78 in the CD house...PICS OF MY NEW CAR!!!

Well done KWB - you are doing great.

What low GI cookbook have you got??? I must admit to thinking the same - I don't want to be doing this again next year etc - so once i've lost what i want to ... I NEED to keep it off.

I currently have (under my work desk) Rick Gallop's GI Diet Green Light Cookbook & the Big GL plus Diet Planner by Fiona Hunter.....

YES! keep away from that choccie!!!!! LOL
I dont fully understand yet how the GI diet works, but my CDC has reccommended that its a great way to keep trim after doing CD, i also think CD maintenence is loosly based on the GI principals too.
i hope its not too hard to understand, and i will be able to get my head round it, there's nothing worse than spending hours planning what you can and cant eat on any which day and trying to follow really complecated rules!!

Umm, well ive tried to read about how the GI diet works, but its just so confusing! Im a bit daunted by it, although maintenence is a way off yet. I even got to thinking about starting Slimming World again because GI confused me so much! Can anyone help:help2:?
From what i can gather the Carb content of a food determinds what GI the food is, but then some foods, like chocolate could be low GI but isnt as good for you...then you have to look at the other nutritional information...or is it a case of common sense here? i just want something easy to understand! or will i just get the hang of it in time?

Good morning KWB,

I know what you mean about being confused by GI, some people click straight away but I find that the best way is to follow some of the recipes rather than get all confused by the science. AWT has some great ones in his both for Veggies and Meat eaters alike and I found that just by following his recipes it slowly clicks. I wouldn't say I know much about it now but you start to understand what you can eat and what you can't just by cooking it.

I did the Hay (Food Combining) a few years ago and I find that when I cook now I still watch what I put together on a plate. I used to get very bloated when I ate and so I tried the Hay and noted that I didn't get bloated anymore, I still do if I eat Oats especially if I have them with milk (which is typical when they are supposed to be good for you) but if I have them with water no real problems.

You will find as you master the recipes that you will also find what foods suit you and what don't also how certain foods affect you good or bad.

Because we have been without proper meals for so long our bodies are almost new born so we can try various meals to see whether some foods cause our weight gain while others don't (if you understand what I mean).

Stick with trying you will probably find the doing easier than the reading.

Copied from a Low Gi website - not sure if it'll help or not KWB ... still learning myself!

Gi - what's it all about?
Gi is all about how the foods we eat impact on our blood sugar levels. You might be familiar with the sugar rush feeling you get when you eat chocolate. But once that ends, you may find yourself looking for another hit.
You feel that way because the glucose released into your blood stream is rapidly stored in fat cells by the action of the hormone insulin. The craving you feel is your body's way of trying to correct that dip in blood glucose levels.
How can you break the cycle?
The Glycaemic Index (Gi) is a way to rate carbohydrate foods to indicate how quickly they're broken down and the impact they have on our blood sugar levels. High Gi foods cause a rapid rise in blood glucose levels, followed by an equally rapid drop as insulin does its job. Low Gi foods have a much more gradual effect, being broken down more slowly and avoiding the glucose roller-coaster. The great thing about lower Gi foods is that they're filling, satisfying and healthy.
This plan is about stabilising blood glucose and insulin levels, beating cravings, feeling full, losing weight - and having more energy.

Getting to know Gi
Glucose and white bread are used as the standard and they both have a Gi of 100. All other foods are then measured against these two.

  • Low Gi foods have a value of 55 or less
  • Medium Gi have values of 56 to 69
  • High Gi have a value of 70 or more
This plan will give you a mixture of these foods, with low Gi choices being given where possible. The good news is that having a low Gi food along with a high Gi treat will lower the overall Gi of that meal, making it easier for your body to cope. A diet of low Gi only foods could quickly become dull, so we've added some favourites in here to make things easier.
The Gi rules
Calories still count
Portion sizes given on this plan can be vague - for example, a handful of this, a spoonful of that. This is done deliberately for two reasons: to save you using the kitchen scales every time you want a bite to eat, and to give you control over how much you eat.
Eat slowly to allow your brain to register when you're full - and then stop. Leave the table feeling you could eat just a little bit more. Remember low Gi foods aren't 'free foods' - they still have calories.

ooh thanks Bev!
I really enjoyed doing Slimming world but think i may have to give GI a go and it seems more 'sensible' for maintaining and learning how to eat again.
