Ibuprofen and fertility? is this new??

#1
Hi
I'm one of those people who always reads the patient info leaflet before I take any medicine. I've a lousy headache today and wanted to take an ibuprofen. As it's a brand I've not used before (Tesco) I read the leaflet to check the dosage was the same as I'm used to and it says:

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines which may impair fertility in women. This effect is reversible on stopping the medicine. It is unlikely that these tablets used occasionally will affect a woman's chances of becoming pregnant: however she should consult her doctor before taking this medicine if she is having problems becoming pregnant."

Is this new? I've taken ibuprofen for headaches for years and I've never read this before. I'm not TTC at the moment but I probably will be in a few months and found this interesting. I know you can't take it when pregnant but I'd never heard there was a chance it could stop you getting pregnant. I was lucky enough to get pregnant straight away last time and avoided medicines while TTC but I think next time we try I'll be steering clear of the ibuprofen just in case. Does anyone know of this or what research it's based on?

My daughter has to take strong ibuprofen for Crohn's Disease all the time. She has never had trouble getting pregnant....2 were planned and 1 wasn't.

I think it's probably rare that it would affect anyone but even if it is remotely possible I would think they have to give a warning just to be on the safe side.

I shouldn't worry too much!

No problem at all. I imagine it has no effect for most people but it's certainly worth knowing about if you're struggling to conceive. So many of my friends have had or are having problems, it's heart-breaking.
