Marathon Training

Hi everyone. I have 4 marathons in 2013. 3 Walking ones and 1 bike marathon. I'm still pretty heavy to do much of running because it hurts. But April 7th, I have my first 26.2 mile walk marathon and train almost every day. Hoping when I lose more weight, I'll be able to run.

Wow elm, that's fantastic! How long do you think a walking marathon will take?

Day time. Starts at 7am.

To be able to get a medal, you have to complete the marathon in 6 hours and 30 minutes. So I downloaded the 10k app and will include running in that to hopefully be able to finish.

Hi girls, hope you don't mind me asking in here, my gorg husband has really spoilt me knowing I really want to get outdoors and start my running training, he's bought me gloves to complete my outfit but also a watch. I've got irregular ectopic heartbeats and love him he's bought me a watch that shows all that but I would of preferred one that tracks distance! I hated to sound ungrateful but I don't really see the point in spending £60 on something that really for an extra £40 max I could get one that I really would use.
I've spoken to him, he thinks he can return it - amazon - but can anyone help me where to begin with a new one?
I would just love to be able to leave my house and it tell me how far and miles per hour really!

Cheers in advance oh and happy Christmas!!!

I bought the Garmin Forerunner 10. It's new and it's the cheapest, most basic and smallest watch that Garmin does - only £99. I've had it since the end of October and it does everything I need it to do and it's easy to use. I can't recommend it highly enough. Here's a link to more info: Garmin | United Kingdom | Forerunner 10: Every Mile Matters

I bought mine from Tesco and used Clubcard vouchers as part payment, so even more of a bargain!

Thanks!

Debating whether to put the refund against a spinning bike as hubby wants to get into fitness but hates the treadmill!
Suppose it would be good for my cross training but I really need to get out and run!!

up to 16 miles i was fine, but after that everything was sore. the last 10 miles were the worst for me, couldnt even walk proper and had to sorta waddle to get to my train. seized up on the train and went to get up, fell flat on my face :(
i cant wait to do it again in 2013

Lucy - I've got the Garmin Forerunner 110, which is great. It comes with a heart rate monitor, which I have to say I don't use. It also measures calories burned, distance, time and pace. As I think you can with all Garmin's, you can connect it to your computer and get a better view of the route you have taken, elevation etc - really useful.

I started the 10k app and having a hard time running because of my shins? Did you guys have a hard time when first starting out? When did it get any easier?

elm - do you have pain in your shins all the time you run? I've never had that, for me it was mainly a lack of physical fitness which caused me problems with my breathing! Could you have shin splints maybe? Or could it be to do with your trainers - have you had them properly fitted at a sports shop?

Shin splints are a big typical injury for those just camping up their miles. You can only increase mileage by 10 % per week to do it injury free. Are you increasing more than that?

i struggled at first but with pains in my hips, i only get these pains now when i run longer distances. dreading when i have to do 15 miles plus.....

I get shin splints. And I only just started running so there's not much for me to increase. I try to follow the app that tells me to run/walk. And my shoes are fitted for me correctly so I guess it's just I have to get use to it.

Thank you for your responses!

Make sure you're warming up before running, but if you're starting with walk/run then I assume you are.

Here is some advice that I copied from a Runner's World article: (read the full article here)

An ounce of prevention…
To guard against shinsplints, stretch and strengthen the tendons and muscles in the front of the leg by using band exercises. Anchor one end of the band to a heavy object, such as the leg of a sofa. Stretch the band, then loop it around the end of your foot. Move your foot up and down and from side to side against the band’s resistance to exercise different muscle groups. Many sports shops stock elasticated resistance bands (eg Clinabands).

An even simpler approach is to sit on a table or chair and loop either an ankle weight or a filled paint bucket around your foot, then move your foot up and down from the ankle.
Also, make sure to wear stability shoes or motion control shoes and consider orthotics, if your GP or specialist says you need them. Also replace worn-out shoes, warm up well and run on soft surfaces, and avoid overstriding, which puts more stress on shins.

Sitting down today to wade through all the marathon training plans I have printed out and to see which one I am going to follow - it makes it seem much more real - eek!!
