What I posted in the Gold Diary about the Ball Gown

Sunday, June 12, 2011
Well, decided on a dress for the Summer Ball (July 8th). It is one of the smaller formals I have and it fits and does not look too bad. It is lilac and lace and is possibly "vintage" as I purchased it from a thrift store!

I bought it at the RAF base's shop (and this is where the ball will be) so there is a possiblity someone there might recognise it. Probably only a slight possibility as I bought it over a year ago (I think), and it could have been brought in by anyone of any rank and even a retiree.

Plus, I suspect it has not been worn in years (it is somewhat fitted with lace over taffeta). And, I'm not all that bothered... I think it fits well (and will fit even better in a month's time) and will certainly be motivation to stick to my diet and work on some fitness (need to flatten the tummy and tone the arms). The colour suits my fair complexion, too.

Oh, and unlike every other long dress I own -- this one is perfect length (no alterations needed!). Even the straps aren't too long (I think the original owner must have been close to me in size and build).

It is nice to have this sorted and I feel good about NOT spending any money on a dress or wrap (it has a wrap) -- as I have shoes, a bag and jewellery that will work well. So, paying to have my hair put up (I made a booking) won't seem like such a splurge.

My DH is happy with the 15.5 inch shirt that I bought for our son (it was an inexpensive one, but it looks okay). But, we'll need to get over to Lakenheath next Saturday to see about getting him some new dress pants (his are too big and can't really be altered that much).

Below is a reply to something Alli (Herewego) wrote about the dress.

Maybe it is procrastinating that worked this time: I am still doing my "Spring Clean/Clear Out" and I Finally got the room/wardrobe with the dresses -- so, in the interests of "not keeping it if I will never wear it, etc." I tried them all on. DH settled on the one I'll wear.
And, because DH has lost so much weight I suspected that his dinner suit would need altering. Luckily he has a big chest and shoulders, so losing weight did not make the jacket too big. However, the trousers are beyond alterations. we'll need to go to Lakenheath on Satruday and get him some new ones. Our son's tux shirt (not a good quality one) fits now! I would like to get him a nice one, but he is half-Scottish and wants to wear the one we have. The original shirt is way too large.

We usually get a professional photo taken at these things, so I will crop DH out of the photo (per his request) and post it on this thread.

Had I read Minz's post I might have had DH take photos as I tried on the dresses for him -- he picked the dress. I have one that I really liked (and thought about wearing because it has a bi-level hem and that is quite the thing now), but he liked this one and I like it, too.

It is nit very piratey... but he has vetoed doing anything theme related. We are such opposites in this! Oh well, he is willing to put on a dinner suit, spend a fortune on tickets, stay up late, socialise, dance, etc. for me -- so, I can wear the dress he likes and not play pirate princess for him.

Well done on the dress - I will wait patiently to see the photo given my request was a tad late :) xx

Hi Carla,

Ooh, a ball gown. Lovely!

I don't know what to suggest that won't ruin the chic look! Maybe some feathers in your hair?

The dress I am wearing has rhinestone straps (I think they were added to the dress, but I like them). I have two large Rhinstone hair slides (barettes) that I am going to have the hairdresser put in my hair. I am going for for a sort of half-up, half-down and big sausage curls I think (my nod to pirate theme).

Something like this:

I have enough hair for this -- but it'll be a lot of work for the haridresser!

Now if I could only get DH to wear a hat and parrot! (Not in this lifetime)

Lol @ hat & parrot, you'll look lovely, can't wait for pics!

Thanks... I am out id a bit to try and find some sheer fabric to make pretty straps for a wedding dress. One of my son's friends is getting married soon and his fiance has a lovely strapless dress, but it is bit too big in the bust. She can add some "chicken cutlets", but it may still slide a bit -- so I suggested adding straps (removeable). So, if she wants photographs without the straps she can remove them -- then add the support for the dancing and walk down the aisle.

What is it with me and elaborate dresses this week?

Mel

P.S. My "Coachee" lost 3 pounds this week! So, she is getting with the programme. I am so pleased for her. That is four off so far.

Morning Mel,

Love the hair-do and the dress sounds lovely. Shame your OH won't play ball and wear a parrott :D

Well done to your coachee on 3lbs off. She must be very pleased.

Hope you are having a good day honey xx

Hi Chels,

I hope you had a good day, too. I had my annual medical exam/mammogram today and the doctor said it looks good (no changes). Then, I went shopping and picked up a thing to sort handbags, and some dress bags that are long enough for ball gowns.

I am really determined to clear the clutter. I am in the process of trying on every single pair of jeans, trousers, etc. to sor them by size. And any item of clothing that is too big is leaving the house. I have already taken a few bags of stuff to the thrift store.

In addition to too big clothing... if I am pretty sure I have not worn it years and cannot see any time in the near future when I would... it is leaving, too.

That is problem with not moving for many years... you don't do a proper clear out. I have lived in this house for 6 1/2 years. It is time to "pretend" that I moving to another country and need to lose some weight in household goods not just my body!

You're just too organised Mel :p

You need to come & sort my life out I think. :D

Ha! Not at all -- I'm working on it. I have decades of accumulation to undo (and there are four of us).

Have you ever seen these Mel?
My Beautiful Bra Straps
saw them at the Ideal Home Exhibiiton a couple months ago and nearly bought some. The crystal straps would be lovely for a wedding dress.

Love the sound of your 'retro' dress for the Ball, how exciting!

Thanks Lynn,

I saw something like these on the Hanes website (American Underwear Company) from the US but they would not get here in time.

However, the dress has an organza bow and I used the long piece of fabric to show how we could make straps from similiar fabric and then sort of bunch them every few inches. And, she liked that.

I had show her my Rhinestone straps, and demonstrated how we could to the same for hers with pearls (but she did not like the added pearls -- she is only 19 and thought it was too much).

I'll take a photo and post in when I get it done -- which I MUST do this morning. Her last day of work is today and I think she leaves in a couple of days.

Oh, Lynn -- I started on new diary on the Gold Members. Much the same as this - except I feel more comfortable posting more personal information on that forum. It can't be googled either -- I think.

How are the travel plans going?

Mel

Hi Minz...

Thanks. My DD just had her first day of Secondary School (it is primary week and the kids get to spend a wekk at the school they'll go to next year). She had a great time.

You'll be in Santori soon -- I've yet to plan my family's holiday!

Mel

My niece is moving up to Secondary this year too. I remember how scary it was, a week to get used to it all before you move is a great idea!

Hi Mel, good to have you back with us, that bus is filling up nicely! :) x

Monday weigh-in -- up 1/2 pound from last week!!! I know I was not perfect, but ??? However, I am wearing a long jeans skirt (as it was cold this am -- and had some coffee), so maybe it was the clothing. I will track better this week and try very hard to follow the "no S" ideals.

No exercise (it is Aquafit night) as it is DH's birthday. Also DD and I have to be the hospital by 7:15 a.m. tomorrow (and it is 45 min to hour trip there) for her outpatient surgery (mole removal). So, no fitball tomorrow, either.

That pesky 1/2lb would deffo be the clothes and coffee. I can weigh before my morning shake (not physical one :8855:) and put on 1lb no sweat! Hope you have a lovely evening and :( to the early start! XX
