Primal Eating and Intermittent Fasting - Phoenyx's Experiment of One...

I have noticed a marked decrease in the amount I can eat before I feel full this weekend. For dinner, after a very light lunch, for example , I had a small dish of creamed spinach, a handful of green beans, a chicken breast and a chicken leg. Quite substantial, but something I would have easily finished before and then had berries and dark choc too. But I struggled to finish this, and i also struggled to finish my food yesterday. Interesting!

I'm now going to try a 24 hr fast til 5.30pm tomorrow. I had planned this, but I thought I'd eat more for dinner. Oh well, I'll just play it by ear :)

Sorry for the butt in but just wondered the difference between this & Atkins? When I'm on Atkins I have no appetite, but I'm never sure if it's just due to ketosis or if the higher fat is more satiating or another reason. Good luck with the fast.

I'm assured there's not much difference between this and Atkins later stages if you eat clean, except in paleo the focus is on eating naturally, the way our ancestors ate, and low carb just happens as a by product. On Atkins, low carb is the focus.

So on paleo, I eat meat (but it should be grass fed / organic / free range etc depending on the meat), fish, nuts, seeds, veg (unlimited), fruit (limited if you're trying to lose weight), and roots and tubers (eg sweet potato) if wanted. Some (like me) also include dark choc, red wine and some full fat dairy. No carb or calorie counting. There's lots of different versions (e.g some include fasting, some limit snacking etc) - I guess it's more of an umbrella category, rather than referring to a specific diet.

Atkins, on the other hand, is a specific diet thst requires carb counting. It could be done in a paleo way, but doesn't have to be. You can include artificial sweeteners and processed foods eg Atkins bars, peperamis, diet soft drinks etc. which are no nos on paleo. You also limit fruit / veg & tubers, depending on where you are with the diet.

Akins induction stresses you need to stay on ketosis whereas I think most paleo peeps are "keto-adapted" ie can use easily use ketones as a fuel with no discomfort but don't stay in ketosis all the time, depending on their food / exercise that day.

Macronutrient composition tends to be similar with maybe slightly more carbs on the paleo side. My carbs range between 30-80g with a breakdown of roughly 60% fat, 10-15% carbs and 25-30% protein.

For me, paleo is a more natural way of life than Atkins, which to me is a bit more of a diet. That said, you can follow Atkins in a very natural way if you choose, and I think Katie does this very well.

Hope that helps!

Food porn.... My girls had this for pud whilst I was stuck with black coffee! Good thing my appetite has decreased, eh?

That said, I've promised myself this for my next treat / cheat!

That looks amazing!

So summary of last week:

Stayed off mfp so no food stats.
Did 3 x 15-16 hr fasts
Body fat went from 40.6 at start of week to 40.0 this am. :)

I'm going to try and do an average weight for the week as my weight seems to hop up and down a bit:

Last mon weighed in at 12.12.6, today I weighed it at 12.9.6, so down 3lbs :)

I'm going to record an average weight for last week and compare it to an average each week as my weight is a bit up and down at the mo and it isn't giving me a true picture.

Mon 12.12.6
Tues 12.11.6
Wed 12.11.2
Thurs 12.10.6
Fri 12.9.6
Sat: 12.9
Sun 12.9.8

Oops am late for work will post av later :)

Morning P
Well done keeping off mfp and like your idea of avg wkly weight. Interesting that since i gave up counting carbs/using mfp I find it more difficult to resist the scales - so working on that! Think it's because i have lost the "pleasure" of seeing the scales decrease plus terror to gain all back ......baby steps;)

Have a good day x

morning.:D
strange how addictive things can be,and not just on the food front.

Okay, to calculate my weekly average weight, I'm going to have to work in lbs rather than stones...

Mon 12.12.6 = 180.6
Tues 12.11.6 = 179.6
Wed 12.11.2 = 179.2
Thurs 12.10.6 = 178.6
Fri 12.9.6 = 177.6
Sat: 12.9 = 177
Sun 12.9.8 = 177.8

Av 178.6 = 12.10.6

Not sure I like that! Prefer my sat weigh in!!! But I'll take it as a base and see if it works next week!

Thanks for the extensive & helpful reply, it was really useful. I don't eat meat so I really struggle with any low carb plan, although love the way I feel when I do eat that way. I'm naturally more of a veggie than fruit person so that element is ok for me, it's just other stuff (lentil etc) that are higher carb. Your diary is really interesting so I'm going to keep reading anyway. Thanks again.

No problem, I've done so many diets now, I'm glad I've found one that fits and can help a little.

Not sure I'd manage Atkins as a veggie. I know some do, but not sure I could. Probably, if I were you, id read up on lots of different diets and take the best bits of each to make your own.

Good luck :)

The key is being organised as it's very hard to grab snacks or make quick things. Have a great Rose Elliot book so just need to be organised. She has a recipe for a great granola.

Yummy peaches and macadamias :)
