Soup - how filling is it?

I'm going to try taking some soup to work tomorrow, had chicken salad today and I was STARVING by the time I got home. Well, not starving but hungry enough my belly hurt lol I bought a really nice looking soup from the co-op earlier, it's a 600g pot and it says that a serving is 300g. I don't really have soup that often. Just wondering, is 300g likely to be enough? Would 600g be too much? I probably won't have bread or anything but do take fruit too. I know that each person is different but just thought I'd ask your opinions which I value so much!

I try to stick to 300g per serving, I think that's a nice sized bowl, but guess it depends on its calorie content. I find the 'thicker' soups to fill me up longer. I do the same with Tesco cartons - lentil and bacon soup is about 180 cals per 300g.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but I'd love to hear yours and others favourite homemade low cal soups!

This is 115 cals for 300g, so calorie wise could have 600g but just not sure if maybe it's too much. Don't want to waste it!!

Well, on a non-calorie counting basis I LOVE bacon, potato and stilton soup. My mum makes it, is lush!!

I used to make a really nice one, trying to remember what was in it! Sweet potato was the main ingredient. The best thing about soup is you can throw whatever you've got in there! Think I might try and have soup more whilst it's still cold enough!

1 Tbsp Crisco Vegetable Oil
2 Stalks Celery, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 (approx 14 ounces) Sweet Potato, peeled and diced
1/2 cup Pearl Barley
1 1/4 cups Lentils
2 tsp Dried Oregano Leaves
2 tsp Dried Basil Leaves
1 Tbsp Dried Parsley Leaves
3 Tbsp Tomato Paste
2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
6 Cups Reduced Sodium Vegetable or Chicken Broth

Heat oil in large pot over medium. Add celery, onion, and garlic, and cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until softened. Add sweet potato, barley, and all herbs. Stir to coat well. Add tomato paste and vinegar and stir to combine. Add all broth, and bring to a boil, Reduce heat; cover and simmer for approx 35 minutes, or until the grains and potato are tender.

Makes 8- 1 cup servings

Here are the nutritionals based on a 1 cup serving:
Cal 163, Fat 2.2, Sat 1.3, Poly .2, Mono .1, Chol 0, Sod 550, Potassium 705.9, Carb 30.1, Fiber 20.1, Sugar 3, Protein 7.3,

That sounds TASTY! Love stilton. Love bacon! Love 'tato! Only 163 cals as well! Think I'm going to be going shopping this wknd! Thanks!

Soup is only filling if it's served with a loaf of fresh warm bread and salted butter........... sorry this thread has induced a serious food porn moment for me!!! x

Christ, that sounds like the sexiest thing ever right now! Really rich, creamy salty butter on warm, just baked, bread with a really thick soup.

Nom Nom NOM!

Haha I want just baked bread now! But on the soup thing, the heinz 300g cans are just right for me. The bigger ones I could never finish. Normally have it with a slice of toast :) No butter :(

Aaaaarrrggghhhh stop it!!! I can't take it!!! We have family with an organic dairy farm and I'm nearly crying now for some of uncle colins newly churned butter on a homebaked scone with jam and cream.....

Ahhh f'off with the talk of bread and butter!!!! I'm not taking bread, if I can't have proper bread I'd rather not have any!

My nan bakes bread...really really good bread...really really really good bread and I miss it!! Am a serious carb addict and it's my biggest fall down! On the plus side after reading this thread I may have soup tonight! ;-) x

Couldn't you take a small wholemeal roll, they're about 150 cals but the whole meal would still be low calorie.

Has anyone seen '10 things you need to know about losing weight'? You can watch it on Youtube, it's very interesting! One of thepoints is about just how filling soup is. Two groups of cadets were given the exact same meal; chicken, rice and vegetable with a cup of water.

One group ate it in solid form, the other group had it whizzed up into a soup then their stomachs were scanned to see how full they were. Both groups exactly the same at this point.

They were then scanned 4 hours later and the soup stomachs were still really full! The other one's almost empty!

I really urge you to watch it if you havn't. The exercise tip is the best, sorry that it's off topic. The presenter walked at moderate speed on a treadmill for 90 min and was disappointed to of only burned 19g fat, or 160ish cals. HOWEVER, he goes in the next morning and his bmr is measured whilst he is still. The afterburn if the exercise has caused him to burn another 48g fat, even in his sleep...how good is that?!

Ooo am going to look it up when on the laptop, that's so interesting and surprising!

Gosh I'd much rather walk for 90 mins than run for 10 lol and now I can do do happily in the knowledge it's the smart choice not the lazy one :)

Think I'll look that video up this wknd too - it sounds really interesting! I hope you get an afterburn effect from jogging for 30 mins too!

I love the campbells low fat condensed soups, you add water to them to 'dilute' them so it makes a nice big bowl and low calorie x
