Dave's diary

#1
Into week 3 so I guess I should have started a diary by now!

My road to Exante is probably a familiar story to a lot of you. Gradual weight gain before a 'what the hells happened to me' moment! For me the weight started going up when I went from a job where I was fairly active to being stuck behind a desk. Didn't really notice it to be honest for a long time until I was trying to buy some jeans and couldn't find any I could get on.

That was a couple of years back (or probably more now) and with the help of my doctor I started losing weight by eating less and doing more exercise. All was good till I picked up an injury and couldn't go to the gym for a while. Got put on reductil to help stop me putting on what I had lost while I couldn't exercise and stayed pretty static. Problem was once I started exercising again the weight still stayed the same.

Had all manner of tests and tried all types of diet with the docs supervision (eliminating certain types of food, eating less calories - i was even down to 600 a day on a regular diet, more calories) which went on for about a year with nothing happening.

As you can imagine getting up to go to the gym and sticking to a diet got harder and harder with nothing happening on the weight loss front and after being referred to a specialist who basically said there was nothing they could do to help I pretty much gave up.

Since then I put a bit back on and was still unhappy being so big but had got to a point of not knowing what to do about it.

The next big moment was when I went on holiday last year. On the plane it was a struggle to get the seatbelt on, my wife was trying to get me to ask for the extension but there was no way I was doing that. Between that and seeing the photos from the hol I knew I'd got to have another go. Went to Spire to see about surgery but wasn't keen. Besides the cost I can't help feeling it's cheating plus I was worried about going through all that and then still not losing weight as I'd not lost weight before eating healthily.

Decided to go for Exante as a last roll of the dice, if this doesn't work then I'm pretty much out of options.

I don't particularly want to be slim I just want to get to a point where buying clothes isn't a mission and going to the beach or on holiday doesn't fill me with fear. At the moment being the size I am puts me off going out and is really affecting my quality of life so getting that back on track is really my aim.

I'm into week 3 so far and not a problem so far. Seem to have been very lucky and haven't had any side effects and have lost 24lbs!

Will be getting back into an exercise routine in the next week. Didn't want to start back up in the first couple of weeks in line with the advice from Exante.

Not sure at the moment if I will bother with an AAM week, not missing meals so I may just stay on TS.

Did order the mixed bumper pack first time round but next time I might change and try and avoid a couple of the flavours I don't like. I'm starting to find the bars a struggle, less the taste and more struggling to get the whole bar down - have to wash it down with water, might give the Tesco bars a go.

So far so good then and fingers crossed everything stays on track and the weight keeps coming off. Going to Miami at the end of March and although I know I won't be down to the weight I want to be I hope to be a good chunk of the way there so I can enjoy the holiday.

Sounds like Exante is working perfectly for you. And 24lbs lost already in such a short time, you'll look fab for your holiday in March and probably a good four to five stone down if the stone a month ideal stays true.

Look forward to your updates :D

A great start Dave! I'm almost at the end of week 2 so just behind you. I'm no stranger to VLCDs though, having gone 10 months straight on Cambridge in 2006. I lost 10st then so know they work if you just stick with it.

I regained 5st of it back over the course of 2 years because of some horrendous family crisis events and have spent the last year struggling just to maintain a weight I don't want to be at so I'm giving a VLCD another go. I'm enjoying the Exante packs and prefer the taste to those of Cambridge - I find them milder and less 'synthetic'.

One question though - on Cambridge, men have to have 4 packs a day. Do you still only have three on Exante? You guys need more calories because of your extra muscle mass - is this taken into consideration on Exante?

Good luck with your journey :)

3rd weekend and it's going great so far. the weekends were the point that I thought I would fail if I was going to fail but so far so good.

Went for a short run this morning to test the water, plan to start on the coach to 5K plan tomorrow to add a bit of exercise into the diet.

Russiandoll, I'm on a bar, shake and soup a day. I think I read in the Exante booklet that you could add an extra soup or shake a day if you're exercising but to be honest I don't really feel like I need all 3 of those at the moment so might not add a 4th next week when I start exercising.

Hi Dave. WOW 27lbs in 3 weeks WELL DONE.
Do you live on your own? I find my hardest part is coping with cooking for the family. I am 100% committed but I have had some wobbly moments in the last 3 weeks. I'm great in work, it's when I get home I'm worse!
I have 2 weeks annual leave now and I am dreading it although I have committed to TS 100% for the next 6 weeks I am worried I will slip-up :(

I live with my wife so she's cooking for herself at the moment. It's not too bad as she likes a lot of things I don't but I can understand what you mean. When she does make something I like it's not fun having her sit there eating it while all I've got is a shake!

For some reason this morning I was starving. Big glass of water before heading off to work and I was fine by the time I got there tho.

Week 3 weigh in tomorrow, I've already had a look on the scales in the week so I'm hoping for another good loss. Expecting it to slow down to 2 or 3lb a week but happy that it doesn't seem to be so far. I guess the more you've got to lose the quicker it comes off!

Well done Dave, you seem to be flying! I looked for ages on here to see how fellas got on with this diet, but couldn't find any, then I start it myself on Saturday and there's a few of us on here now. The more the merrier!

Best of luck with the next weigh in.

Just popping in to say hello, and a big congratulations on your great start :D It really does seem that Exante is working for you.
I had one of those plane seatbelt moments myself last year...in fact I nearly let the thought of the seatbelt/flip-down table thingy stop me from taking a trip to Japan (how crazy is that?). I did have to ask for the extension, but it wasn't too toe-curlingly embarrassing. I did vow that I wouldn't be that weight when I next travelled by air though!

There are a few of them on here...my fella being one of them. He doesn't post himself, but his results are in my ticker, and he does read the forum.
To give you an idea of how he's doing - he started off at just under 24st and by week 9 he'd lost 4.5 stone  Hope that gives you both a little motivation :D

Thanks Conor and good luck yourself! The guys are definately outnumbered on here, not sure if that's cos guys can't be bothered to lose weight or they just don't like to talk about it.

The fear of the flight I totally understand. I'm going to Miami in March and the thought of having the same problem again is really helping me stay on track. I guess it's the fact that it's in public.

Your OH is def an inspiration! Weird that the guys on here seem to lose weight at a pretty rapid rate, sure there must be some scientific reason for it.

So week 3 weigh in and I was hoping to get somewhere close to last weeks 7lbs but actually lost 10lbs, can't believe how fast it's dropping off. I had to get off the scales and recheck a few times as I couldn't believe it!

Sure there will be a slowdown round the corner so I've got to make sure when that comes I don't view it in a negative light and just concentrate on the fact that it's still coming off.

In other news I survived an hour in Tesco helping the OH, who has a broken ankle, with the shopping. Wasn't too bad actually. I picked up some of the Tesco bars while I was in there to give them a try. Didn't get on with the Exante raisin bar and the orange one isn't much better so if these are any good I might buy a load while they're on offer.

just realised I'm nearly quarter of the way there in 3 weeks, wasn't expecting that when I started!

even if I have a major slowdown this week I'm hoping to get into the 200s.

:wow: well done on another 10lbs.

My belief on why men lose weight at a faster rate has something to do with our hormones and TOTM!. Don't know what the other ladies on here think, but it has nothing to do with the picking and cheating I have done for the last 3 weeks :p hehe

Good luck with the next week xx

Got my second order, didn't go for the bumper pack this time as I'm not keen on the choc shake or veg soup. Wish I hadn't ordered any bards as well after trying the Tesco ones, much nicer!

Got a couple of funny looks stocking up on Tesco bars while they're on offer.

Men have more muscle mass and that's what burns the calories. It's also why resistance exercises (muscle toning) for women helps with weight loss and well as creating a shapelier bod (although I think I'd have to do weights every day for the rest of the millennium to sculpt mine!)

Great weight loss Dave - I'm hugely jealous but really pleased for you :)

week 4 weigh in, lost 4lbs this week. I knew the slowdown would be coming but as I'm sure most people have found when the weight loss has been so high it's hard not to see it as 'only' 4lbs. Still if I look at it as 38lb in 4 weeks there's nothing to complain about there!

Was away at the weekend and managed to stay 100% despite having prepaid the full english when I booked the hotel months ago! Also managed to resist the temptation of the huge buffet at a meeting last night.

Xmas is being talked about in our house. I'm not sure if I'm going to take a break or not. I'm keen to reach my target as soon as possible and at times I think it's more trouble than it's worth to try taking a break at Xmas. Might just go for a run while everyone else is having Xmas dinner!

Pull a cracker then go for a run in your hat!!!

Well done on another 4lbs gone for good.
Have a good week xx

Holy McMoly!! A 'slow down'?? If only we girlies could achieve those losses we'd be on cloud 9!

Well done on your spectacular loss in such a short space of time.

As for Christmas - you're a stronger person than me. I plan to take a Christmas break then get back to it a couple of days later.

Well done again :)

guess a slow down is all relative. still if I can keep going at around 4lb a week I will be more than happy.

of course saying I won't have a break at Xmas and not actually having one are 2 different things. it will probably depend on how fast the weight keeps coming off. if i keep losing around 4lbs a week then i won't be far off my target by the time I go on holiday which would be fantastic so that's my incentive to stay 100%. if I can get close to my target before then I'll probably start reintroducing food a week or two before I go so I can eat (sensibly!) on holiday and then either go with a more traditional diet or maybe WS when I get back. That's a way off yet tho so wait and see!
