How to stay on track when something big happens or changes!

Wondering your tricks for staying on track when going through the tougher times in life....
Any ideas you may have please share

The main thing for me, is just reminding myself constantly that going off track doesn't help me at all. I feel worse and it takes me further off track.

Doesn't always work so I would like other coping strategies too.
 
I know this may sound strange, but I have recently begun writing up a list of emotions I feel when I eat something that hinders my progress. I tend to write my emotions down soon as I've eaten and then after a few hours, I've got words such as guilt, neverending diet, depressed, unhappy, anxiety etc written down. When I feel like being naughty I read the list and it really does help me mainly because when I wrote down my emotions they were quite raw.
