Mature Bride's quest - to be ideal weight for the first time since 22 years old

CD's all over the table. Trying to plan music. Albatross, Waterloo Sunset, Baker Street, there's a Santana one that I cannot recall the name of, not While my Guitar Gently Weeps, though I love that too. Instrumentals for before and after ceremony, mainly 60's because that's our 'era'

Had a lovely long walk along the East Thames path after work yesterday. Flat shoes on today ready to get another walk in somewhere.

My body is not agreeing to weight loss, not sure why, not hungry or overeating, getting in decent walks most days, Had 2 days on which I had off-diet things out of 25, but still only 11 pounds off and 7 of those in first week. Dr Dukan's prediction of TW by 28th Jan 2013 is going to be way off. Asthma has been better, sleeping pretty well, just would expect to be losing more compared with my previous eating out, wine 3-4 times a week, lunches in cafes etc.

Need to have a rant! Two 61 year olds, widowed, British born and bred have to be INTERVIEWED before being able to get a license to marry. Have to make an appointment, the first available appointment is 2nd October. What are they going to do, teach us the facts of life? Proof of address - best thing I'm told is my Council Tax bill, but it has to be less than 3 months old - Council Tax bills are sent out in MARCH each year, of course it's more than 3 months old. I went in with my usual smile and a cheerful Good Morning, to be met with a frosty glare, told that "I should have phoned first" and came out feeling like a school kid who'd been to the headmasters office. Came home and phoned, more frost, more being talked down to including being told that 2 x £35 is £70 and that I must bring........ we must be together......we have to be interviewed and that a council tax bill was the best proof of address, but....................A serious case of Grumpy Old Woman coming on

I think everyone had to do the interview, my ex got asked my birthday and middle name, neither of which he could remember... Unfortunately we still got the license!

Is the Santana one 'she's not there' ?

Yep, everyone now. A sad sign of the times, I think.

Had the most wonderful weekend away in Bristol. Lots of sightseeing, mainly on foot, so plenty of walking in. Careful about what I ate, not able to be perfect, but very, very careful. So I get on the scales this morning and am back up to 14 stone. Where I was at WK 1. This is not working for me.

Okay, I'm prone to fluid retention, it is harder to lose weight when you're older, and the more times you've dieted and gained the more resistant your body becomes, even so the underlying trend should be downwards. Sadly not even feeling any improvement in energy or get-up-and-go. I am sleeping well and my breathing has been good the last 2 weeks.

Writing a list of every diet I have ever heard of and or tried, trying to work out where to go next.

When I as researching diets, I knew that low-carb was for me, I already was aware that I could have a bad energy slump within 20 mins of eating wheatflour and suspected that starches were upsetting my asthma. I also decided that I was NOT going to PAY for another failure, apart from a book I would not buy a 'regime', 'counselling', 'pills' or 'food-packs'. Would not be tempted by adverts for laser fat removal, incredible berries or any other scheme that would leave somebody else considerably richer. I also wanted something where with a little ingenuity I could still eat with friends. I felt that Dukan would cover the bases, which it does, however the pounds are still there. I even weighed in the pharmacy in case my scales had blown a gasket.

Losing weight is important to all of us, we all have the desire to feel better, look better, find clothes buying easier, fit the airline seat, lie-down in the bath and submerge our stomachs, trim our bikini lines without a flabby tum in the way, bend down, wear one-size-fits-all tights, put our children/grandchildren on our laps and more. I am going to really be a bride for a day at 61 and it matters that I have a outfit that I love, not one that's the best I can manage, for my size. I'm not going to run marathons, but I've always liked walking, I want to do so with ease. I've always walked up the escalators at tube stations, I want to carry on doing so. I might have grey hair, but I still like to be admired.

Re-think time.

Hi FP

I've been reading your diary with interest since you started and I'm sorry that Dukan isn't working for you.

I changed plan recently, not because Dukan wasn't working for me (it was, in terms of losing weight, but I was finding the exclusion of foods very difficult and this was manifesting itself as ever increasing "cheats"), but because I saw the most amazing Horizon programme on TV. It was presented by the scientist Michael Mosley and was called Eat, Fast and Live Longer. I believe it's still available to watch on You Tube.

I have been a dieter for, literally, all of my life and yet this intermittent fasting idea was a brand new concept to me. I found the programme and the principles absolutely fascinating. There are many health benefits to be gained and, almost as a bonus, weight loss occurs as well.

I'm not trying to sell this to you (I have nothing to gain), but I thought you might like to add it to your armoury of options. There is a JUDDD (Johnson Up Day Down Day) forum on Minimins, which is where I now mostly reside.

I hope this is useful.

Thank you for posting, I had listed this idea as one to research more fully as the vitality that a number of followers claim has great appeal. I realise that losing weight should be a plan for life not just for numbers on the scales, however I have a goal and speed, in this case does matter. I have 16 weeks, at 2 pounds per week that would be 2 stone off, a size 14 dress instead of a size 18.

Sorry to hear it's not working out for you. Have you been recording your measurements? Sometimes they can show a result when the scales don't....

I can't really advise on other diet plans, as this is the only plan that has ever worked for me, but understand it's not everyone. As P said, quite a few people have signed up to the alternate day fasting and are having success, so it might be worth a shot? Good luck with whatever you decide, and let us know how you get on! :)

Agree that inches often melt when the scales don't show it, and to be fair my stomach is smaller, but that occurred in the first two weeks and nothing since. Looking at JUDDD and Fast days, also considering going back to VLCD for a short time just to get moving, maybe take two weeks of VLCD, then go on to JUDDD.

I was very happy and very successful on Lighterlife a few years ago, no side-effects, just boundless energy and fast weight-loss, then my late husband became ill and died, so I let it go, hit the comfort eating again. My life has taken such a wonderful upturn it's time to drop the weight and stop overeating, which is why JUDD appeals as a long term plan.

An unexpected day at home, so more research and reading on diet plans, with a note pad beside me because there are SO MANY varieties, so many axes to grind, and so many that I believe will just make someone richer - rather than us slender and healthier.

, and so many that I believe will just make someone richer - rather than us slender and healthier.

You know that is so true...really this weight loss business is all down to self discipline but easier said than done and that's why for me having a 'plan' is the only way fwd. The Dukan Plan seems for me a way of life now and that is what it has to be...'for life' being as I am a carb junkie.

I previously tried the VLCD and if I lived a totally unsociable life then I might find that the plan for me but being as I do like to socialise then I had to take a look at what I could follow as I am too weak in the self discipline department.

Good luck Freedom Pass and keep posting so we can see how you are doing.

Well, my first day on VLCD, back down to the lowest point I'd reached before starting to fluctuate wildly. With a very active, lively life VLCD is not easy to follow or plan for - Special Lunch event on Sunday for instance, however I need a boost and this looks like the short, sharp, shock to kickstart me again. I like the principle of Dukan and can happily look at it as a way-of-life for life to maintain a weight and lifestyle, but being stalled in week 3 and 4 was depressing. Having done a lot of reading yesterday, I suspect I had relied too much on the dairy products, even though they were zero fat etc they may not suit me.

I also wonder if the fact that I had my gall bladder removed effects what and how my body digests things. I've never had any side-effects or found anything that is uncomfortable to digest, which others do, nor have I developed a hiatus-hernia which is common in women who have had the gall bladder removed.

Third day on Tony Ferguson as a sole source, feeling pretty good, actually went out in jeans today (unusual for me) and felt quite at ease, had a long walk. Wedding invitations sorted! Place cards Sorted!! Favours sorted!! Venue sorted!! Registrar sorted!! No point in shopping for a dress until I have a clue about SIZE. Must talk to florist.

VLCD has given the kick that I wanted 13.7 today, that's a stone since 30/07/12, feeling good.

I was shocked to hear the rude way that male person (NOT a man in the true sense) spoke of the large girl on the DLR on Thursday, I have to say I've been overweight in larger and smaller amounts for nearly 40 years and no-one has ever said anything rude to me. Cheeky maybe from someone close enough to be able, but never rude.

President's lunch event tomorrow, so VLCD will have to be waived, but I needed this quickstart. At least I can wear the dress I wanted to. Then Scotland the following week - YAY see grandchildren. An African Bar-bque the following week, mmmmm possible back to Dukan and a PP day then.

Al's granddaughter is making our invitations and place cards - we shopped for stuff yesterday and she started last night has e-mailed some pictures already. I actually wore jeans (rare) and felt okay in them.

I haven't heard of the Tony Ferguson diet, but glad that it's working out for you, and congrats on losing a stone!

I don't know why some people feel the need to be rude to others. The people that do it normally have issues of their own (insecurity usually the number one problem). The best thing is just to ignore them and feel sorry for them that they enjoy this kind of behaviour!

Wedding plans are sounding good, not much left to do by the sound of it - except the all important dress :D

Ah, yes the all important dress. Have spotted the perfect one.

Problem 1: It's on an American Site, they do have agents here and I've been to one you must order 3 MONTHS ahead. No idea what size I will be.

Problem 2: They do not do this particular design in silver or platinum colours, I had set my heart on silvery shades as it suits my skin and I feel suitable for a 62 year old widow.

I have though, been told of a dressmaker who can make her own patterns without being outrageously expensive, so maybe she can do something very similar for me in silver.

If anyone wants to have a look Dessy International as it's not in silver I would choose the TOPAZ. I don't do lace or frills, this has the elegant simplicity with some individual styling.
